The function of the electric parking brake is
dependent on the on-board electrical system volt-
age. If the on-board electrical system voltage is
low or there is a malfunction in the system, the
electric parking brake may not be able to be
applied. In this case, the yellow ! indicator
lamp lights up.
In this case, park the vehicle in the following way:

Park the vehicle on level ground and secure it
to prevent it from rolling away.

The electric parking brake is only actually

indicator lamps or the red ! (Canada) indi-
cator lamps light up continuously.
It may not be possible to release a parking brake if

qualied specialist workshop.
When the vehicle is not switched on, the electric
parking brake carries out a function test at regular
intervals. Noises are normal in this process.

The electric parking brake is automatically applied
when the transmission is in position j.
In addition, at least one of the following conditions

The vehicle has not been started
R
The driver is not sitting in the driver's seat
R
The belt buckle is undone
The electric parking brake is also automatically
applied if A
ctive Distance Assist DISTRONIC has
brought the vehicle to a standstill.
The electric parking brake is also automatically
applied when the transmission is not in position P,
but the following situations occur:

There is a system malfunction
R
The power supply is insucient
R
The vehicle is stationary for a long time
The red F and ! (USA) or ! (Canada)
indicator lamps in the instrument cluster light up.
The electric parking brake is only actually applied
when the red F and ! (USA) or ! (Can-
ada) indicator lamps light up continuously.
