Overview

The Merlin OVERDRIVE™ (MRC950EVO) is a light commercial rolling door opener designed for safe and proper operation of garage doors. It is equipped with various safety features and can be installed on either side of the door. The opener is factory-configured for right-hand installation, but can be adjusted for left-hand installations.

Function Description:

The Merlin OVERDRIVE™ (MRC950EVO) is designed to automate the opening and closing of light commercial rolling doors. It is suitable for doors with a maximum height of 5.5m and a maximum curtain area of 25m², provided the door is of continuous corrugated sheet construction, spring-balanced, and has a mass not exceeding 250kg. The door axle diameter must not exceed 35mm. The opener can be activated using various devices, including the Up and Down arrows on the control panel, an outside keyswitch or keyless entry system (if installed), or a transmitter/wireless wall control. When activated, the door will open if closed, close if open, or stop if in motion. If the door is stopped in a partially open or closed position, it will reverse direction upon activation. The opener also features an obstruction detection system: if an obstruction is encountered while closing, the door will reverse; if an obstruction is encountered while opening, the door will reverse and stop. For enhanced safety, the optional Protector System™ (IR Beams) creates an invisible beam that, when broken by an obstruction, causes a closing door to open and prevents an open door from closing. This is strongly recommended for applications where young children may be present. The opener also includes a manual release mechanism, allowing the door to be opened and closed manually in case of power failure or other issues. The opener's courtesy LEDs will turn on when initially plugged in, when power is briefly interrupted, or when the opener is activated, and will automatically turn off after 2.5 minutes.

Usage Features:

Before installation, it is crucial to ensure the garage door is well-balanced and free from sticking or binding. All locks and ropes connected to the door must be disabled. The door should remain spring-balanced when lifted to about halfway, and should not require excessive force (more than 20 kgF) to raise or lower. If the door does not hold in place or binds, a qualified door technician should be consulted. Chain reduction assemblies and hand chains must be removed prior to fitting the OVERDRIVE™. Extension poles should not be used with this opener. The OVERDRIVE™ can be used on windlocked doors under specific conditions: the door must be professionally installed, correctly sprung, and maintained according to the manufacturer's instructions; the door size should be up to 18 m²; and the product should only be operated in normal conditions, not during adverse wind conditions.

Installation involves placing the opener in manual release mode, fully opening the roller door, and securing it with a rope. The door axle U-BOLT and door mounting bracket on the non-opener side must be securely fastened. The door should be supported with a door stand or similar device. The opener is then slid over the door axle, engaging the drive legs into the door drum wheel. The door mounting bracket is refitted to the wall, and the opener is clamped onto the door axle and bracket. If side room exceeds 95mm, the opener can be clamped independently to the door axle. All ropes and the support stand are then removed. The door's manual operation should be checked for smooth movement without sticking or binding. The disengage handle should be attached at a height less than 1.8m above the floor. The power cable should be positioned away from the door curtain and any moving parts, and the opener plugged into a nearby power point.

Setting the travel limits for right or left-hand operation and force is a critical step. The opener will operate during this procedure, so ensure the door is clear of obstructions and hands are away from moving parts. The right or left-hand operation is set by ensuring the door is halfway and engaged, turning the power on, and pressing and holding the black (Limit) button until the orange indicator LED flashes. The correct bank of LEDs (right for right-hand, left for left-hand) should light up. If incorrect, press the Yellow learn button to switch. The open (UP) limit is set by pressing and holding the "UP" button until the door reaches the desired open position, then releasing and pressing the black limit set button. The bottom (DOWN) limit is set similarly using the "DOWN" button. The force setting is learned by pressing the UP button, allowing the door to travel to the UP limit, then pressing the DOWN button, allowing it to travel to the DOWN limit. The indicator LED will stop flashing when the force has been learned.

The safety reverse system must be tested by placing a 40mm obstacle flat on the floor. The door must reverse upon contact with the obstacle. If it stops, remove the obstacle and repeat the limit and force setting. Warning labels, including the risk of entrapment label and general warning label, must be installed in prominent places. The risk of entrapment label should be adjacent to the release handle, at a height less than 1.8m from the floor. Any fixed wall control or wireless door control must be mounted at a height of no less than 1.5m and out of reach of children. The manual release instruction card should be attached to the rope.

Optional accessories include the Protector System™ (IR Beams) for enhanced safety, especially in households with young children. This system detects obstructions in the door's path. The Timer-to-close feature allows the door to automatically close after a specified time period, with the garage door opener lights flashing for 8 seconds before closing. If an obstruction is encountered, the opener will make a second attempt to close; if still obstructed, it will open, stop, and not close until the obstruction is cleared and the opener is operated again. The E128M Wireless Wall Button can be installed at a minimum height of 1.5m above the floor, within sight of the door. Transmitters and wall buttons are typically factory-programmed but can be added or deleted. The E840M Wireless Keypad allows for keyless entry with a 4-digit PIN. The E475M12V Battery Backup Unit provides power during outages, allowing the opener to operate up to 20 times.

Maintenance Features:

The opener requires minimal maintenance and no additional lubrication. Limit and Force Settings should be checked and properly set during installation, and re-adjusted if weather conditions cause minor changes in door operation, especially during the first year. The safety reverse test should be repeated after any adjustments. Monthly maintenance includes:

  • Manually operating the door to check for imbalance or binding, and calling for professional door service if needed.
  • Checking that the door opens and closes fully, and resetting limits and/or force if necessary.
  • Repeating the Safety Reverse test and making any necessary adjustments. Every 6 months, the opener clamp bolts should be retensioned. If the transmission range of a transmitter decreases, the battery should be replaced. For the Battery Backup Unit (BBU), after installation, the BBU should be tested by disconnecting the opener's power cord. A solid orange LED indicates operation on battery power, while a flashing orange LED indicates low battery charge. The BBU should be allowed 24 to 48 hours to fully charge before relying on it. Under normal usage, the battery lasts 3 to 5 years. To maximize battery life and prevent damage, the battery backup should be disconnected when the opener is not in use for an extended period. The BBU also has diagnostic LEDs: green for normal operation (solid for fully charged battery), orange for operating off BBU (solid for activating door, flashing for low battery), and red for detected errors (will automatically shut off and attempt to restart every 5 minutes). If a red LED remains on after power is restored, service is required. To replace the battery, unplug the BBU, remove the screws holding it to the wall, remove the retaining bracket, disconnect terminals, and reinstall the new battery, ensuring correct positive and negative terminal connections.
