1. Description and Intended Purpose
The motor Swissdrive 400 (type RNH 175/20) is a permanent-excited DC motor with brushes. It
contents a planetary gear with the ratio 1:8.8, a Vulkollan coated drive wheel, an internal thermo
switch and an electrically released brake. The brake has been designed as a parking brake, its use as
a main brake is limited. Emergency stops with high load and / or at high speed cause increased wear
of the brake components. Therefore after 5’000 emergency stops shall be provided maintenance of
the brake. In case of increased requirements to running smoothness or positioning accuracy there
can be installed an encoder, type EM1 or HEDS 9100 or similar, with hub wheel hole diameter 4mm.
The brushes can be removed from outside of the motor (see point 6). On request the drive wheel can
be delivered with different coatings or diameters on request.
The Swissdrive 400 motor was designed as a vehicular drive with a maximum wheel load of 500kg for
use in enclosed rooms, e.g. for an industrial truck.

Overview

The Swissdrive 400 (type RNH 175/20) is a permanent-excited DC motor with brushes, designed as a vehicular drive for industrial trucks and similar applications in enclosed rooms. It is capable of handling a maximum wheel load of 500kg. The motor integrates a planetary gear with a ratio of 1:8.8, a Vulkollan-coated drive wheel, an internal thermo switch, and an electrically released brake.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Swissdrive 400 is to provide propulsion for vehicles, particularly industrial trucks operating indoors. The motor's permanent-excited DC design ensures consistent power delivery, while the integrated planetary gear optimizes torque and speed for efficient movement. The Vulkollan-coated drive wheel offers good traction and durability. An internal thermo switch protects the motor from overheating by monitoring its temperature. The electrically released brake serves primarily as a parking brake. While it can be used for stopping, its use as a main brake is limited, and frequent emergency stops, especially under high load or at high speed, will accelerate wear on its components. Maintenance for the brake is recommended after 5,000 emergency stops. For applications requiring enhanced running smoothness or precise positioning, an encoder (such as type EM1 or HEDS 9100, with a 4mm hub wheel hole diameter) can be installed. The motor is designed to accommodate such an installation, and alternative encoder types matching the mounting dimensions can also be used. The brushes are externally removable for ease of maintenance. The drive wheel can be customized with different coatings or diameters upon request to suit specific application needs.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Voltage: 24VDC
  • Power: 350W
  • Current Consumption: 32A
  • Insulation Class: F
  • Protection Class: IP 43
  • Gear Ratio: 1:8.8
  • Speed Rating: 120/min
  • Brake Torque: 45Nm (at drive wheel)
  • Permitted Wheel Load: 500kg
  • Mounting Dimensions: The motor has a diameter of Ø200mm, with the drive wheel having a diameter of Ø175mm. The overall length from the mounting surface to the end of the motor is 123mm, with an additional 50mm for the drive wheel. The cable outlet is positioned on the side facing away from the wheel.
  • Wiring:
    • Power Supply: Red (+24VDC, 4.0mm²), Blue (ground, 4.0mm²). The direction of rotation can be inverted by swapping these wires or via the vehicle/motor control unit.
    • Brake: White (+24VDC, 0.25mm²), Brown (ground, 0.25mm²).
    • Thermo Switch: Green (T1, 0.25mm²), Yellow (T2, 0.25mm²).
    • Encoder (Optional): Orange (Vcc, 0.14mm²), Green (channel A, 0.14mm²), Yellow (channel B, 0.14mm²), Blue (ground, 0.14mm²).
  • Cable Type: IGUS Chainflex CF9.UL.02.04 is specified for brake, thermo switch, motor, and encoder cables. Motor cables should be rated for a nominal current of 32A and be shielded.

Usage Features:

  • Brake Operation: The control unit must unlock the brake before the motor can rotate. To stop the vehicle, the motor should be stopped before the brake is locked to prevent damage and premature wear.
  • Encoder Integration: The motor is pre-configured for encoder installation, allowing for improved running smoothness and positioning accuracy. The installation involves placing the hub wheel on the motor shaft, securing the encoder in place of plastic sleeves, and soldering the ribbon cable wires to the encoder contacts. Care must be taken to avoid high temperatures (above 110°C) on the ribbon cable during soldering.
  • Installation: The motor is mounted to the motor carrier or chassis using five M10 screws. "Mediumfirm" threadlocking compounds (e.g., Loctite 243 or Ergo 4052) are recommended for securing attachment screws. Installation should be performed by properly trained personnel, ensuring the system is powered off beforehand.

Maintenance Features:

  • Drive Wheel Change: The drive wheel can be replaced by untightening six M8x20 Torx screws. Heating the screws to 80-95°C with a soldering lamp may be necessary to melt threadlocking. New screws or "mediumfirm" threadlocking (e.g., Loctite 243, Ergo 4052) should be used when reassembling, with a tightening torque of 17Nm.
  • Brush Change: Brushes are externally accessible for replacement. This involves removing the drive wheel or the entire motor for better access. The six tubular covers are untightened with a size 4 slotted screwdriver, and the old brushes are removed. The motor's inner space should be cleaned of dust using compressed air, taking precautions against inhaling dust. New brushes are then inserted with correct orientation into the tubular covers, which are then tightened.
  • Spare and Wear Parts: A comprehensive list of spare and wear parts is provided, including the complete motor, drive wheel, various screws, brush sets with tubular covers, cover, "Swissdrive" sticker, hub wheel, encoder housing, and an encoder installation kit.
  • Troubleshooting: For issues not resolved by the manual's recommendations, direct contact with the manufacturer (Micro-Motor AG) is advised.
  • Service and Repair: For maintenance tasks beyond changing the wheel, brushes, cover, and encoder, the motor should be sent to the manufacturer for service or repair.
