Overview

This document provides installation and service instructions for the Economite RE4850BA, RE4700BA, RE4400B, and RE4400BA Gas Burners. These burners are designed for various gas utilization equipment, including gravity and forced circulation furnaces and boilers, and are particularly suited for horizontal or downdraft applications as they do not require a draft to maintain a pilot. Their power burner design also makes them suitable for oil burner replacement, as well as rooftop and industrial applications.

Function Description:

The Economite gas burners utilize an intermittent spark-ignited pilot system for reliable ignition. The core function involves a blower motor that provides combustion air, which is then mixed with gas in the pilot system and main burner. An air pressure switch ensures that the blower is operating at its correct speed before allowing gas flow to the ignition control module, preventing burner operation without adequate airflow. The ignition control module manages the pre-purge sequence, ignition timing, flame sensing, and the switching of the gas valves. Once the pilot flame is established and sensed by the flame rod, the main gas valve opens, allowing the main burner to ignite. A flame signal, measured in DC micro amps, confirms the presence of a stable flame. If the pilot fails to ignite or the flame is lost during operation, the ignition control module will shut off the automatic safety shut-off valves and lock out, requiring a manual reset.

The burner's piping system includes a main manual shut-off valve, a redundant gas valve, and a pilot regulator, all working together to control gas flow and pressure to the pilot and main burner. A sediment trap is also included to prevent debris from entering the gas train. The combustion chamber is designed to protect non-heat transfer surfaces and create a radiant bed for efficient heat transfer. The burner tube or stainless steel sleeve must be sealed airtight into the combustion chamber opening, ensuring proper air delivery and preventing premature deterioration of internal components.

Usage Features:

  • Automatic Ignition: The burner features automatic ignition, simplifying startup. Users are instructed to set the operating control or thermostat to call for heat, and the burner will initiate its pre-purge and ignition sequence.
  • Safety Lockout: In the event of ignition failure or flame loss, the system automatically locks out, requiring a manual reset by de-energizing the control. This prevents the accumulation of unburnt gas.
  • Pilot Gas Pressure Adjustment: The pilot gas pressure can be adjusted to optimize the flame signal, ensuring reliable flame detection by the ignition control module. This adjustment is performed via a screw on the pilot regulator.
  • Combustion Air Shutter Adjustment: The combustion air shutter can be adjusted to fine-tune the air-to-gas mixture for optimal combustion, as determined by flue gas analysis.
  • Manual Shut-Off: Manual shut-off valves for both the main gas and pilot lines are provided, allowing for complete isolation of the gas supply for service or extended periods of non-use.
  • Overheating Protection: In case of appliance overheating, users are instructed to shut off the manual gas control to the appliance but not the electrical supply to the blower, allowing the blower to continue running.
  • Diagnostic Information: The manual includes a trouble chart to assist in diagnosing common issues, guiding users or technicians through electrical and flame checks.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Inspection: The manual emphasizes the importance of regular inspection of the combustion chamber, heat exchanger, and flue connections for tars, scale, dirt, and soot. Joints should be checked for leaks.
  • Pilot System Check: The spark electrode assembly and flame sensing rod should be inspected for damage or displacement. The pilot air tubing must be kept free of kinks or obstructions to ensure proper airflow.
  • Blower Wheel Cleaning: Cleaning of the blower wheel is identified as a common service requirement, indicated by a deficiency of air in the flame. Motor cooling air vents should also be cleaned.
  • Electrical System Verification: Prior to service, all wires should be labeled, and proper operation verified after servicing to prevent dangerous conditions due to wiring errors.
  • Gas Leak Detection: A weak liquid soap solution is recommended for detecting gas leaks in piping and valves.
  • Purging Procedure: A specific procedure for purging air from the gas supply line and accumulated gases from the utilization equipment and chimney is provided, which is crucial for safe first light-off and after repeated unsuccessful ignition attempts.
  • Component Replacement: The manual advises using only MIDCO specified and approved parts for additions, changes, conversions, and service, and recommends that such work be performed by an authorized MIDCO representative, service agency, or fuel supplier.
  • Safety Device Checks: The pressure relief safety valve on boilers should be checked for good operating condition. The air pressure switch and limit controls should also be verified for proper operation.
  • Documentation: Installers are required to fill out an "Installation Adjustment Data Tag" and affix it to the burner or gas utilization equipment, providing a record of installation settings. The manual itself should be affixed adjacent to the burner for future reference.
