Overview

The ALAN 507 SpeakEasy is a portable two-way radio designed for communication over short distances. It features a compact and robust design, making it suitable for various personal and professional applications.

Function Description:

The ALAN 507 operates as a transceiver, capable of both transmitting and receiving radio signals. It utilizes a PLL synthesizer for frequency control, ensuring stable and accurate communication. The device supports 69 channels with a channel spacing of 25 KHz, operating within the 433.075-434.775 MHz frequency range.

Key functions include:

  • OFF/VOLUME Control: This knob serves as the main power switch and allows for adjustment of the audio output volume.
  • Channel Selectors (UP/DOWN): These buttons enable users to navigate through the available channels, with the selected channel displayed on the LED screen.
  • "CALL" Button: Pressing this button transmits an alerting tone to other radios on the same channel, useful for attracting attention.
  • "SCAN" Function: This feature allows the radio to automatically search for busy channels. When a carrier signal is detected, the scan pauses, resuming after a few seconds once the communication ends. The scan can be deactivated by pressing the PTT button or any other control.
  • "DW" (Dual Watch) Function: This advanced feature enables simultaneous monitoring of two different channels. If a signal is received on the second monitored channel, the conversation on the first channel is automatically interrupted, and the receiver switches to the second channel. Monitoring resumes 4 seconds after the signal on the second channel ends.
  • "PTT" (Press-to-Talk) Button: This button activates the transmitter when pressed, allowing the user to speak. Releasing it switches the unit back to receiver mode.
  • "MON" (Monitor) Control: Pressing this button opens the squelch, allowing the user to hear background noise and determine if a channel is busy. This is particularly useful for initial volume setting.
  • VOX Function (PTT/VOX switch): The ALAN 507 supports hands-free operation through its VOX function. Transmission can be initiated by speaking close to the unit. The microphone sensitivity for VOX can be adjusted to two levels: "H" (high sensitivity) or "L" (low sensitivity).

  • Current Drain: Below 100mA
  • Stereo Jack for External Speaker: 3.5mm

Usage Features:

  • Antenna: The antenna screws into the top of the radio, ensuring good signal reception and transmission.
  • Speaker and Microphone: Integrated into the radio, these components facilitate audio input and output. For optimal transmission, the user should speak with a normal voice level, holding the radio 4-10 cm from their mouth.
  • LED Display: A clear LED display shows the currently selected channel.
  • LED "TX/BATT" Indicator: This LED illuminates during transmission and also indicates low battery power, prompting the user to replace or recharge batteries.
  • Speaker Microphone Connector: An external jack allows for connection of optional speaker/microphones or earphones for private listening or hands-free communication.
  • Charge Jack: The radio can be connected to a charger via this jack. It operates at a maximum of 4.5 volts. Important: Do not connect to electrical systems or sources higher or lower than 9/10 volts, as this will cause severe damage.
  • Hole for Wrist Belt: Provides a convenient attachment point for a wrist strap.
  • Belt Clip: Allows for easy attachment of the radio to a belt or clothing.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Compartment: The battery compartment is accessed by pressing a grooved latch and sliding the cover downwards. It accommodates 3 "AA" size alkaline batteries or 3 "AA" Ni-Cd rechargeable batteries.
  • Battery Care (Ni-Cd):
    • Full Discharge: Ni-Cd batteries should be fully discharged before recharging to prevent the "memory effect," which can reduce their capacity. The "TX/BATT" indicator coming on during receive operation signals a full discharge.
    • Full Charge: Always allow Ni-Cd batteries to fully charge before use.
    • Storage: It is recommended to store Ni-Cd batteries in a discharged state rather than charged.
    • Compatibility: Never use batteries that differ from the recommended types. Avoid mixing old and new batteries or rechargeable batteries of different capacities.
  • Alkaline Batteries: Alkaline batteries are not rechargeable and should not be connected to external power or a charger.

The ALAN 507 SpeakEasy is designed for user-friendly operation and reliable performance, with clear indicators and controls to facilitate communication.
