2 Function
2.1 Initializing
After switch-on, the appliance is first initialized as follows:
Each setting of the ceramic valve is activated.
The 5 compartments of the capsule magazine are checked for contents.
The capsule cage is raised and lowered and advanced to the starting position.
After the heaters have warmed up and a rinse cycle has taken place, the
appliance is ready for operation.
2.2 Capsule Magazine Optical Sensor
The optical sensor for the capsule magazine is located on the underside of
the intermediate plate (under the capsule magazine). Refer to Figure D-5 or
D-6, Item 10.
The sensor registers the following:
The selected capsule magazine compartment. This is possible because
one section on the underside of the magazine is colored dark and this is
used as a reference starting position.
Whether the capsule magazine is present.
Whether the selected compartment is empty or not.
If the selected compartment is empty, Chamber empty - Please refill is
displayed.
2.3 Brewing Procedure
After selection of the desired type of coffee and the serving size, the capsule
magazine is turned to the appropriate setting. The capsule transport slide
locates behind the capsule and pushes it into the brew unit. The capsule
cage is lowered and three sharp teeth contained within pierce the uppermost
area of the capsule in three places. The ceramic valve closes the water path
to the decompression vessel and hot water is injected into the capsule from
above at a pressure of approximately 218 pounds per square inch (15 bar).
This pressure causes the foil on the underside of the capsule to be pressed
against and punctured by the pyramid piercers on the capsule plate. Coffee
