This document provides operating instructions for the Miele Cooker Hood DA 72/1, designed for both vented and non-vented operation. It covers essential information for users and installers, including safety guidelines, appliance description, operation, cleaning, maintenance, and installation procedures.

Function Description

The Miele Cooker Hood DA 72/1 is designed to extract cooking fumes and odors from the kitchen environment. In vented operation, the fumes are filtered through a grease filter and then expelled to the outside. For non-vented operation, the fumes pass through a grease filter and additional charcoal filters, which absorb odors, before being recirculated back into the kitchen via the upper part of the kitchen cabinet. The unit is factory-set for vented operation and includes a non-return flap that closes when not in use to prevent air exchange between the outside and the room. A few seconds after activation, this flap opens to channel fumes outside. The cooker hood features a fume deflector with a glass panel that, when pulled out, automatically starts the unit. The fan power can be adjusted to different levels, from low (#1) to high (#5). It also includes cooktop illumination, which can be operated independently of the cooker hood's fan.

Usage Features

To operate the cooker hood, first turn on the main switch. Pulling out the fume deflector will automatically activate the fan at the previously selected power setting. Users can then select the desired fan power (Position 1 for low, Position 5 for high) and switch on the cooktop light if needed. For optimal fume extraction, especially when using front burners or dealing with large accumulations of fumes, the deflector should be pulled out completely. For lighter use, pulling it out slightly is sufficient. After cooking, it is recommended to keep the unit running for an additional 10 minutes to eliminate any remaining cooking fumes. The unit will automatically turn off when the fume deflector is pushed back in. Remember to turn off the cooktop light after use.

Maintenance Features

Regular cleaning and maintenance are crucial for the cooker hood's performance and safety. Before any servicing, always turn off the main power supply to the cooker hood.

Grease Filter Cleaning:

The grease filter captures solids like dust and grease, protecting the fan motor. This reusable metal filter can be cleaned either by hand or in a dishwasher. It should be cleaned periodically, typically every two to three months, or when discoloration is noticed, or suction power decreases. Fatty build-ups in the filter pose a fire hazard, so timely cleaning is essential. To clean the grease filter:

Pull out the fume deflector.
Slide the filter locks towards the center (as indicated by arrows in the manual).
Remove the grease filters.
By hand: Use a brush to clean the filters in warm water with dishwashing detergent.
By dishwasher: Place the filter vertically (upright) in the lower rack.
Allow the filter to dry completely before replacing it.
When the filter is removed, also clean accessible areas of the casing to prevent fire hazards. Never use the cooker hood without a grease filter.

Charcoal Filter Installation (for non-vented operation):

If the cooker hood is used in non-vented mode, charcoal filters are necessary to absorb kitchen odors. These filters are attached with a screw (included). The charcoal filter is Part Number #3082270, and a Conversion Kit (Part Number #1027011) may also be required, available from Miele dealers or the Miele Spare Parts Department.

Fluorescent Lamp and Starter Change:

Always ensure the main power supply is switched off before changing the lamp or starter.

Un-tighten the holding screws.
Pull the cap of the lamp towards the right.
Change the fluorescent lamp or starter.
Re-fit the lamp cover correctly.
Turn on the power supply.

Glass Panel Cleaning:

For normally soiled glass panels, use a mild detergent. For thorough cleaning, the panel can be removed. Use the enclosed Miele plastic scraper to remove the glass panel by inserting the scraper as shown in the manual and carefully prying the panel upwards.

Installation and Removal:

Installation:

Fit the unit into the top cabinet as shown in the diagram and slightly tighten the mounting brackets.
Pull out the fume deflector and fasten the unit to the top cabinet using the 3 enclosed screws.

Removal:

Remove the 3 screws.
Loosen the mounting bracket bolts until they are hard to turn.
Lift the cooker hood slightly and then remove it downwards. Note: Before re-installing, slightly tighten the mounting bracket bolts to ensure proper clamping action.

Safety Precautions:

The manual emphasizes several safety instructions:

Read and follow all basic safety instructions carefully to avoid personal injuries and damage.
Use the cooker hood only for household purposes.
Repairs must be carried out by qualified technicians only.
Disconnect power supply before servicing.
Never allow an open flame under the unit (e.g., grilling, flambé) as flames can be drawn into the grease filter and start a fire.
Ensure burners are always covered by a saucepan or pot to prevent intense heat from damaging the cooker hood.
Do not leave pots and pans unattended, especially when cooking with oil or grease, as overheated oil/fat can ignite.
The appliance must not be connected to a chimney or vent flue already in use. If a gas water heater or gas room heater is in the kitchen, it is recommended not to use the cooker hood to prevent backflow of exhaust gases, unless sufficient fresh air is always available to maintain a vacuum pressure of no more than 0.16" water lift. Consult local building authority if uncertain.
These precautions are not necessary if the cooker hood is used in non-vented mode with charcoal filters.
For vented operation, duct air to the outside and do not vent into walls, ceilings, attics, crawl spaces, or garages.
The cooker hood is suitable for use above gas and electric equipment. Maintain a minimum distance of 20" (49 cm) for electric cooktops and 26" (65 cm) for gas cooktops between the cooking surface and the bottom edge of the cooker hood.
Do not install the cooker hood over cooking areas using solid fuels.
Only use fire-resistant ducting material, available at Miele Service Center.
Existing regulations prohibit extracting exhaust air through a chimney or shaft used for heating, air conditioning, or other purposes. Consult local building authorities if in doubt.
In case of malfunctioning, shut off the circuit breaker as the plug may be difficult to reach. Turn off the cooker hood's mains supply when servicing or not in use for prolonged periods.
