This document provides operating instructions for Miele dishwashers, specifically model G 5740. It covers various aspects from initial setup and daily use to maintenance, troubleshooting, and technical specifications.
Function Description
The Miele dishwasher is designed for cleaning domestic crockery and cutlery in household and similar environments. It features an integrated water softener to ensure optimal cleaning results, especially in areas with hard water, by preventing calcium deposits. The appliance offers multiple wash programs tailored to different types of loads and soiling levels, including ECO for energy and water saving, Auto for sensor-controlled adjustment, Gentle for temperature-sensitive items, QuickPowerWash for quick cleaning, and Intensive for stubborn deposits.
The dishwasher incorporates several user-friendly features such as an automatic door opening mechanism (AutoOpen) in some programs to assist drying, and a safety lock to prevent unintended opening by children. It also includes an EcoFeedback function that displays estimated and actual energy and water consumption, promoting economical use. Program options like "Express" can reduce program duration, while "IntenseZone" increases cleaning performance in the lower basket for heavily soiled items.
For optimal performance, the dishwasher requires the separate addition of coarse-grained dishwasher salt for the water softener and rinse aid to prevent water marks and aid drying. Combination detergents can also be used, but for best results, separate salt and rinse aid are recommended.

Usage Features
- Control Panel: Features program selection buttons (ECO, Auto, Gentle 45°C, QuickPowerWash 65°C, Intensive 75°C, Further programmes/settings), OK button for confirmation, V/∧ buttons for navigation and value adjustment, Back button, Start button, Timer button, Express button, IntenseZone button, Optical interface for service technicians, and ON/OFF button.
- Display Functions: Shows selected program, timer settings, current program stage, estimated time remaining, energy and water consumption (EcoFeedback), and fault messages.
- Basic Settings: Allows users to set the display language and water hardness level. The water hardness setting is crucial for the water softener's effectiveness.
- Loading: Features an upper basket (adjustable in height and angle), a lower basket with foldable spikes, and a cutlery tray. The FlexCare cup rack with silicone elements provides secure holding for delicate stemware.
- Detergent Dispensing: The detergent compartment holds a maximum of 50 ml, with marks for 20, 30, and max fill levels. Users can use powder, liquid gel, or tab detergents.
- Timer Function: Allows delaying the program start time for up to 24 hours.
- Program Options: "Express" shortens program duration (with increased temperature and energy consumption for optimal cleaning). "IntenseZone" enhances cleaning in the lower basket. "Extra clean" increases cleaning performance by raising main wash temperatures and durations. "Extra dry" improves drying performance by increasing final rinse temperatures and durations. "2nd interim rinse" adds an extra rinse for improved cleaning. "Hygiene cycle" is recommended for frequent low-temperature program users to prevent bacteria and odors.
Maintenance Features
- Wash Cabinet Cleaning: The wash cabinet is largely self-cleaning with correct detergent use. Regular running of the Intensive 75°C program is recommended to prevent odors and contamination, especially with frequent low-temperature washes.
- Door and Door Seal Cleaning: The door seal and sides of the dishwasher should be regularly wiped with a damp cloth to remove food deposits and prevent mold.
- Control Panel and Appliance Front Cleaning: Clean with a soft sponge, warm water, and washing-up liquid, then wipe dry. Avoid abrasive or harsh cleaning agents.
- Spray Arm Cleaning: Spray arms should be inspected every 2-4 months for food particles in the nozzles and bearings. They can be removed for thorough cleaning.
- Filter Cleaning: The filter combination in the wash cabinet retains coarse soiling. It should be checked regularly (after every 50 program cycles) and cleaned to prevent blockages in the circulation system.
- Water Inlet Filter Cleaning: A filter in the water inlet valve's screw thread protects it. If soiled, it can restrict water flow and needs to be cleaned. This involves disconnecting the dishwasher from the mains, closing the stopcock, unscrewing the inlet valve, removing and rinsing the filter, and reassembling.
- Drain Pump Cleaning: If water remains in the wash cabinet, the drain pump may be blocked by foreign objects. The drain pump cover can be removed to access and clean the pump.
- Hygiene Cycle: A dedicated setting to recommend a high-temperature program after several low-temperature programs to maintain hygiene and prevent odors.
- Maintenance Program: A specific program designed for cleaning the wash cabinet using Miele care products (dishwasher cleaner/conditioner) without any load.
