Overview

This document is an operating manual for a Miele vacuum cleaner, model HS11, with M.-Nr. 09 883 730. It provides comprehensive instructions for its use, maintenance, and safety.

Function Description:

The Miele HS11 is a canister vacuum cleaner designed for daily cleaning of flooring in domestic households and similar residential environments. It is suitable for cleaning carpets, rugs, and robust hard flooring. The vacuum cleaner is not intended for outdoor use, for vacuuming dry floor surfaces on people or animals, or for picking up burning, glowing, inflammable, or combustible materials, liquids, or damp dirt. It should also not be used to vacuum toner dust, as toner can conduct electricity. The appliance features a Miele filtration system consisting of three filters: a dustbag, a dust compartment filter (for motor protection), and an exhaust filter, all of which contribute to efficient cleaning and air filtration.

Important Technical Specifications:

The vacuum cleaner operates on a mains electricity supply, and users must ensure that the connection data on the data plate (voltage and frequency) match their local supply. For the UK, the mains electrical plug must be fitted with a 13 A fuse. For AU/NZ, it is supplied with a cable and moulded plug for connection to a 230V/50Hz AC single-phase supply. The fuse rating is quoted on the plug. The appliance is electrically suppressed according to AS/NZS 1044 and carries the RCM Mark for electrical safety. The exhaust filter change indicator activates after approximately 50 operating hours or one year of average use, indicating when the exhaust filter needs replacement.

Usage Features:

The vacuum cleaner is equipped with several features to enhance usability:

  • Handle and Telescopic Suction Tube: The handle connects to a telescopic suction tube, which can be adjusted to suit the user's height for comfortable vacuuming. Release buttons facilitate the adjustment and detachment of these components.
  • Hose Connection: The suction hose connects securely to the vacuum cleaner's socket with a click.
  • Floorheads: The standard floorhead (SBD 285-3) can be adjusted for different floor types, with a foot control to retract brushes for carpets and rugs, or protrude them for hard flooring. An AirTeQ floorhead is also mentioned, which may require suction power adjustment for easier maneuvering.
  • Accessories: The vacuum cleaner comes with an accessories compartment containing a crevice nozzle, dusting brush, and upholstery nozzle. Other optional accessories include various floor brushes (Classic Allergotec, Turbo Comfort, Hard floor, Parquet floor, Hard floor Twister), specialized cleaning sets (MicroSet, CarCare, Cat & Dog, HomeCare), and other tools like a radiator brush, mattress nozzle, flexible crevice nozzles, an extra-wide upholstery nozzle, flexible hose extension, comfort handle with lighting, and a hygiene seal with active charcoal.
  • Power Control: A rotary suction power selector allows manual adjustment of suction power to suit different cleaning tasks, with symbols indicating settings for curtains/fabric, upholstery/cushions, thick pile carpets/rugs/runners, energy-saving vacuuming (quiet), loop pile carpet, and heavily soiled hard flooring/intensive carpet cleaning.
  • Air Inlet Valve: An air inlet valve on the handle can be opened to temporarily reduce suction power, useful for preventing rugs or other objects from being sucked in.
  • Cable Rewind: A foot switch enables automatic cable rewind.
  • Park System: The vacuum cleaner features a park system for pauses during vacuuming, allowing the suction tube and floorhead to be slotted into an attachment at the back. It also has a park system for storage, where the floorhead can be slotted into one of the side attachments, making the cleaner easier to carry or store.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for efficient operation and includes:

  • Dustbag Replacement: The dustbag should be changed when the dustbag change indicator turns red, or sooner if suction power is reduced due to blocked pores from fine dust. Miele dustbags are disposable and designed for single use.
  • Dust Compartment Filter Replacement: This filter, which protects the motor, should be replaced with every new packet of Miele dustbags. Instructions are provided for removing the old filter and fitting a new one.
  • Exhaust Filter Replacement: Depending on the model, the vacuum cleaner may come with an AirClean, Active AirClean 50 (black), or HEPA AirClean 50 (white) exhaust filter. AirClean filters should be replaced with every new packet of Miele dustbags. Active AirClean 50 and HEPA AirClean 50 filters should be replaced when their respective change indicator is completely filled with red. Instructions are provided for replacing each type of filter and for switching between different filter types, which may require fitting or removing a filter grille.
  • Thread Lifter Replacement: The thread lifters on the floorhead's suction inlet can be replaced if worn down.
  • Roller Cleaning: For the SBD 285-3 floorhead, instructions are given for releasing and removing the roller to clean off threads and hair.
  • General Cleaning: The vacuum cleaner and plastic accessories can be cleaned with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Abrasive, glass, all-purpose, or oil-based cleaning agents should not be used. The dust compartment can be cleaned with a dry duster, brush, or another vacuum cleaner.
  • Overheating Protection: The vacuum cleaner has a temperature limiter that automatically switches it off if it gets too hot, for example, due to blockages or a full/soiled filter. Users are instructed to switch off, unplug, remove the cause, and allow the cleaner to cool before resuming use.
  • Genuine Parts: The manual emphasizes using only genuine Miele dustbags, filters, and accessories to ensure safety and maintain suction power and cleaning results.
