Overview

The MikroTik Cloud Router Switch CRS312-4C+8XG is a versatile 8-port Gigabit Ethernet switch designed for both routing and switching configurations. It features four 10 Gigabit Ethernet / SFP+ combo ports, offering flexible connectivity options. The device supports dual-boot functionality, allowing users to choose between RouterOS for comprehensive routing and switching capabilities or SwOS for dedicated switching functions. By default, it boots into RouterOS.

Function Description:

The CRS312-4C+8XG serves as a core network component, providing high-speed data transfer and network management. Its primary function is to act as a managed switch, facilitating efficient data flow within a network. With its 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports, it is suitable for environments requiring high bandwidth and low latency. The device can be configured for various network topologies and supports advanced routing and switching protocols through RouterOS. The combo ports enhance its flexibility, allowing the use of either copper Ethernet or fiber SFP+ modules, depending on the network infrastructure requirements.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Ports:
    • 8x Gigabit Ethernet ports (2.5G/5G/10G Ethernet)
    • 4x 10 Gigabit Ethernet / SFP+ combo ports
    • 1x RJ45 console port (115200 bits/s, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity)
    • 1x 10/100 Mbit Ethernet port for management access
    • 1x USB type A slot
  • Powering: Dual alternative current inputs (AC 100-240 V) for redundancy, using IEC power connectors.
  • Maximum Power Consumption: 60 W under maximum load.
  • Operating Systems: Supports dual boot SwOS (version 2.9) and RouterOS (v6).
  • IP Rating: IPX0 (no protection from water contamination).
  • Cooling: Four cooling fans with automatic speed control.
  • Default IP Address: 192.168.88.1 (for RouterOS management).
  • Default Username: admin (no password initially).

Usage Features:

  • Mounting Options: The device can be mounted in a rackmount enclosure using provided rack mounts or placed on a desktop. For desktop use, rubber pegs can be attached to the bottom. Rackmount ears are secured with four screws on each side.
  • Initial Setup: The initial connection is made via an Ethernet cable using the MikroTik Winbox utility. Users connect to the default IP address (192.168.88.1) with the username "admin" and no password.
  • Software Updates: It is recommended to update the system software to the latest version for optimal performance and stability by clicking the "Check for updates" button.
  • Password Security: Users are advised to set up a password to secure the device.
  • Boot Options: The device can boot into RouterOS or SwOS. The boot OS can be selected from within SwOS (System menu, "Boot RouterOS" button) or RouterOS (System, RouterBOARD menu, "Settings," then "Boot OS"). Boot settings can also be configured via the serial console menu.
  • Serial Console: A serial console is available via an RJ45 port for configuration, set to 115200 bit/s, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity. A standard RJ45 to COM cable can be used.
  • Management Tools: RouterOS offers extensive configuration options. For IP connection issues, the Winbox tool can be used to connect via the device's MAC address.
  • Recovery: The device supports booting from the network for recovery purposes, accessible via the Reset button.
  • Combo Interface Management: The four combo interfaces (10G Ethernet / SFP+) each have two physical connectors, but only one can be active at a time. They are represented as "combo 1-4" in RouterOS. Users can select which physical port to use in the RouterOS software ethernet menu. If set to "auto" and both copper and fiber cables are plugged in, SFP takes priority.
  • MikroTik Mobile App: A smartphone app is available for configuring the router in the field or applying basic initial settings for a MikroTik home access point.

Maintenance Features:

  • Reset Button Functions: The RouterBOOT reset button offers several functions when pressed during power-up:
    • Reset to Defaults: Release the button when a green LED starts flashing to reset RouterOS configuration to defaults.
    • Clear All Configuration: Release the button when the LED turns solid green to clear all configuration and defaults.
    • Netinstall Server Search: Release the button after the LED is no longer lit (approximately 20 seconds) to cause the device to look for Netinstall servers, which is required for reinstalling RouterOS over the network.
  • Backup RouterBOOT Loader: If the reset button is pressed before power is applied, the system will load the backup RouterBOOT loader, useful for debugging and recovery.
  • Environmental Considerations: The device is designed for indoor use in a dry and ventilated environment due to its IPX0 rating. Shielded Cat5/6 cables are recommended for optimal performance and to ensure compliance.
  • Servicing: This equipment should only be serviced by trained personnel due to electric shock hazards.
  • Documentation: The latest version of the device's documentation and product information is available on the MikroTik website.
