Overview

The Milesight IoT Weather Station (WTS Series) is an all-in-one LoRaWAN® weather monitoring system designed for various atmospheric conditions. It consists of three main parts: WTS sensors, a WTS Hub, and a solar panel. This system is built to withstand challenging weather conditions and is easy to install, making it suitable for applications in meteorology, smart agriculture, and smart buildings.

Function Description:

The IoT Weather Station monitors atmospheric conditions such as temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind direction, barometric pressure, and rainfall. Sensor data is transmitted using LoRaWAN® technology. When compliant with a Milesight LoRaWAN® gateway and Milesight IoT Cloud solution, users can remotely manage sensor data and trigger other sensors or appliances via a webpage or mobile app. The device is not intended to be used as a reference sensor, and Milesight is not responsible for damages resulting from inaccurate readings.

Important Technical Specifications:

The WTS series includes several models with varying sensor capabilities:

  • WS305 (Standard Version): Measures temperature, humidity, wind direction, wind speed, and barometric pressure.
  • WS505 (Pro Version): Measures temperature, humidity, wind direction, wind speed, and barometric pressure.
  • WS506 (Pro Version): Measures temperature, humidity, wind direction, wind speed, barometric pressure, and rainfall.

The device features a waterproof, UV-proof, and salt spray resistant enclosure, making it suitable for outdoor harsh environments. It is powered by high-power solar panels with rechargeable battery backup. The system can store over 19,000 historical records locally and supports retransmission to prevent data loss. It offers ultra-wide-distance wireless transmission up to 15 km line of sight in rural areas. The device is equipped with NFC for easy and quick configuration and is compliant with standard LoRaWAN® gateways and network servers.

Usage Features:

  • NFC Configuration: The WTS Hub can be configured via NFC using the "Milesight ToolBox" App (available on Google Play and Apple Store). Users need to enable NFC on their smartphone, open the app, and attach the phone to the NFC area of the device to read basic information and configure settings. A default password of 123456 is required for security when configuring via an unused phone. It's recommended to remove the phone case for better NFC reading. If NFC fails, try moving the phone away and back. The WTS Hub can also be configured via a Type-C USB port by connecting it to a computer, running the ToolBox PC software, and selecting the serial port as USB.
  • LoRaWAN Settings: Users can configure transmission parameters such as join type (OTAA and ABP modes are available), App EUI, App Key, Application Port, Working Mode (Class A), RX2 Data Rate, RX2 Frequency, Spread Factor, Confirmed Mode, Rejoin Mode, and TX Power. For OTAA mode, the default App EUI is 24E124C0002A0001, and the default Application Port is 85. The device supports LoRaWAN versions V1.0.2, V1.0.3, and V1.1. For frequency settings, users can select supported frequencies (e.g., EU868, AU915) and channels.
  • Basic Settings: This includes changing the reporting interval (default 10 minutes, range 1-1080 minutes), setting the restoration of power behavior, and configuring the rainfall accumulation phase (WTS506 only). The rainfall accumulation phase can be set from 0-48 hours, after which accumulated rainfall clears and recounts.
  • Data Storage: The WTS series sensor stores over 19,000 data records locally, even when not connected to a network. This feature can be enabled or disabled in the basic settings. Data can be exported via the ToolBox App (last 7 days) or ToolBox software (more data). Stored data can also be cleared.
  • Data Retransmission: The device supports data retransmission to ensure all data is received by the network server, even if the network is temporarily down. This feature can be enabled in the basic settings. The device records network disconnection times and retransmits lost data once reconnected. The network server can also send downlink commands to inquire about historical data for specific time ranges.
  • Installation:
    • Location: Install within LoRaWAN® gateway communication range, away from high buildings, barriers (trees, telegraph poles), radars, transmitters, or other electrical interference sources (maintain >2m distance from sensors and radar). Avoid heat sources and fence plants taller than 1m within 10m.
    • Solar Panel and WTS Hub: Fix the hub mounting bracket to the solar panel bracket with 4 screws, then attach the WTS Hub to the bracket with a fixing screw. Adjust the solar panel angle (20°, 40°, or 60° optional) and secure it. Straighten hose clamps, slide them through the solar panel bracket's rectangular rings, wrap around the pole, and tighten with a screwdriver. Connect the solar panel cable to the left interface of the WTS Hub.
    • WTS305 Sensor: Loosen the sensor's flange base, connect one side of the sensor cable, and re-tighten the flange base. Connect the sensor to the pole top flange with nuts and bolts. Connect the other side of the sensor cable to the right interface of the WTS Hub. Ensure the arrow on the sensor faces north using a compass.
    • WTS505/WTS506 Sensor: Connect the bent pipe to the mounting bracket, tightening hex socket cap screws and an insurance screw. Connect one side of the sensor cable to the WTS Sensor, pass it through the bent pipe and bracket, then connect the pipe to the sensor's bottom and fix with 3 hex socket cap mounting screws. Straighten hose clamps, slide them through the bracket's rings, wrap around the pole, and tighten. Ensure the arrow on the sensor faces north. Connect the other side of the sensor cable to the right interface of the WTS Hub.

Maintenance Features:

  • Upgrade: Firmware can be upgraded via the ToolBox Software (download firmware from Milesight website, then import and upgrade) or the Android version of the ToolBox App (download firmware to smartphone, then import and upgrade). No operations should be performed on ToolBox during upgrading.
  • Backup: WTS Hub devices support configuration backup for bulk device setup. Backup is only allowed for devices with the same model and LoRaWAN® frequency band. Users can save current settings as a template in the "Template" page of the App, edit the template file, and then write the configuration to other devices.
  • Reset to Factory Default: This can be done via hardware (hold the internal power button for >10 seconds) or via the ToolBox App (go to "Device->Maintenance" and click "Reset," then attach the smartphone to the WTS Hub's NFC area).
