Overview

The Milwaukee M18™ Cordless Grease Gun is a power tool designed for dispensing grease, offering both portability and high-pressure capabilities. It is intended for users who need to lubricate machinery and components efficiently.

Function Description

The primary function of this device is to deliver grease under pressure to lubrication points. It operates on an 18V battery system, making it cordless and suitable for various work environments, including those without immediate access to power outlets. The grease gun features a trigger for controlled dispensing and a trigger lock-on/off mechanism for continuous operation. A speed control switch allows users to select between low and high flow rates, adapting to different lubrication needs.

The device includes a counter dial that can be set to limit the amount of grease dispensed per piston stroke. This feature is useful for applications requiring precise lubrication. The counter can be set to "ON" for continuous dispensing or to a specific number of piston strokes (1 through 50). The counter resets each time the trigger is pulled.

Loading grease into the gun can be done in multiple ways:

  1. Cartridge Loading: This involves inserting a standard grease cartridge into the barrel. The process requires removing the battery pack, pulling back the rod, unscrewing the barrel, inserting the cartridge (open end first), removing the seal, screwing the barrel back on, and releasing the rod.
  2. Bulk Grease Loading (Suction): For bulk grease, the barrel can be used to suction grease directly from a container. This method involves removing the battery pack, unscrewing the barrel, inserting the open end of the barrel into the bulk grease, pulling back the rod, removing the barrel from the bulk grease, wiping excess grease, screwing the barrel back onto the gun, and releasing the rod.
  3. Bulk Grease Loading (Pump): Grease can also be loaded using a pump through a loader coupler. This method requires removing the battery pack, pulling back and locking the rod handle, inserting the loader fitting into the grease gun loader coupler, and operating the loader pump until the rod is pushed out. The rod handle is then rotated to release the plunger, and the rod is pressed completely into the barrel.

After loading grease, the gun needs to be primed to ensure proper operation. Priming involves inserting the battery pack, pushing the priming valve to release air, holding the hose assembly away from the body, and pulling the trigger for 10-20 seconds until grease appears.

An integrated LED light provides illumination of the work area. It can be turned on or off by pressing the LED button or pulling the trigger and automatically turns off 10 minutes after the last use. A fuel gauge indicates the remaining charge in the battery pack, lighting up for 2-3 seconds when the trigger is pulled and flashing one light to signal the end of charge.

Usage Features

The Milwaukee M18™ Cordless Grease Gun is designed for user convenience and safety.

  • Portability: Being cordless, it offers freedom of movement and can be used in remote locations or areas where power outlets are not readily available.
  • Ergonomic Design: The tool features a handle for comfortable grip and control during operation.
  • Accessory Compatibility: The device is designed to work with specific accessories, such as a clear barrel (Cat. No. 49-16-2646), which allows users to visually monitor the grease level and type. Installing the clear barrel involves unscrewing the steel barrel, removing the cap with rod, removing a spacer screw and plastic spacer, screwing the back cap with rod onto the clear barrel, and then screwing the clear barrel into the tool.
  • Safety Features: The tool incorporates safety warnings regarding battery pack usage, proper accessory selection, and the importance of wearing safety goggles or glasses with side shields to reduce the risk of injury. It also emphasizes the need to inspect the tool and hose assembly for damage or wear before each use to prevent rupture and potential injection injury.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides guidance for common issues such as being unable to pull back or push the rod forward, no grease when the trigger is pulled, or the grease gun stopping pumping. Solutions include releasing pressure with the bleeder, rotating the rod, adding grease, priming the gun, or clearing contamination.
  • Contamination Clearing: If the motor runs but no grease is dispensed, it indicates potential contamination. The process to clear contamination involves checking for proper priming and sufficient grease, removing the hose assembly, pulling the trigger for up to 45 seconds, removing a bolt from below the hose assembly, pulling the trigger for 15 seconds, re-inserting any expelled spring or ball, reattaching the bolt, pulling the trigger for 30 seconds, and finally reattaching the hose assembly.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the Milwaukee M18™ Cordless Grease Gun.

  • Regular Maintenance Program: Users are advised to adopt a regular maintenance program, including returning the tool, battery pack, and charger to a MILWAUKEE service facility after six months to one year, depending on usage. This service includes lubrication, mechanical inspection and cleaning (gears, spindles, bearings, housing), electrical inspection (battery pack, charger, motor), and testing to assure proper mechanical and electrical operation.
  • Cleaning: It is important to keep the tool handles clean, dry, and free of oil or grease. Dust and debris should be cleaned from charger and tool vents. Only mild soap and a damp cloth should be used for cleaning the tool, battery pack, and charger. The manual specifically warns against using certain cleaning agents and solvents (gasoline, turpentine, lacquer thinner, paint thinner, chlorinated cleaning solvents, ammonia, and household detergents containing ammonia) as they can be harmful to plastics and other insulated parts. Flammable or combustible solvents should never be used around tools.
  • Battery Pack and Charger Care: The battery pack should only be recharged with the charger specified by the manufacturer. If the tool does not start or operate at full power with a fully charged battery pack, the contacts on the battery pack should be cleaned. If issues persist, the tool, charger, and battery pack should be returned to a MILWAUKEE service facility for repairs.
  • General Safety during Maintenance: Before performing any maintenance, the charger should be unplugged, and the battery pack removed from the charger or tool. Users are explicitly warned not to disassemble the tool, battery pack, or charger and to contact a MILWAUKEE service facility for all repairs. Immersion of the tool, battery pack, or charger in liquid, or allowing liquid to flow inside them, is strictly prohibited to reduce the risk of personal injury and damage.
  • Accessory Maintenance: The manual emphasizes using only specifically recommended accessories and removing the battery pack before changing or removing any accessories. This ensures safety and prevents damage to the tool.
