Overview

The Milwaukee M12™ TRAPSNAKE™ is a line of drain cleaning augers designed for professional use in clearing clogs from urinals and toilets. This manual covers two specific models: the 4' Urinal Auger (Cat. No. 49-16-3574) and the 6' Toilet Auger (Cat. No. 49-16-3576). Both models are designed to be powered by an M12™ TRAPSNAKE™ Driver (Cat. No. 14-50-2576), which is an optional powered driver available in some kits, or by a battery-operated drill in driving-mode on low speed.

Function Description:

The TRAPSNAKE™ augers are specialized tools for clearing drain blockages. They consist of a flexible cable housed within a protective sleeve and a handle assembly. The cable is advanced into the drain to engage and clear obstructions. The 4' Urinal Auger is equipped with a 3/8" x 4' Bulb cable, suitable for urinal drains, while the 6' Toilet Auger features a 1/2" x 6' Retriever Bulb cable, designed for toilet drains. The protective rubber boot at the end of the sleeve helps guide the cable into the drain and prevents damage to porcelain fixtures. The quick lock connector allows for easy attachment and removal of the auger handle or the optional M12™ TRAPSNAKE™ Driver.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Cat. No. 49-16-3574 (4' Urinal Auger):
    • Cable Type: 3/8" x 4' Bulb
  • Cat. No. 49-16-3576 (6' Toilet Auger):
    • Cable Type: 1/2" x 6' Retriever Bulb
  • M12™ TRAPSNAKE™ Driver (Optional): Cat. No. 14-50-2576
  • Power Source: Battery-operated drill in driving-mode (low speed, never above 550 RPM and 50%-drill torque) or M12™ TRAPSNAKE™ Driver.
  • Cable Material: Designed for flexibility and durability in drain lines.
  • Handle Components: Quick lock connector, detent button, cable sleeve, indicator slots, handle cap, upper grip, lower grip, cable clip, cable, protective rubber boot.

Usage Features:

The TRAPSNAKE™ augers are designed for ease of use and safety.

  • Assembly: The auger handle or TRAPSNAKE™ driver connects to the quick lock connector on the auger. For drill operation, a bit adapter is installed into the drill and then inserted into the quick lock connector. Always remove the battery before assembly or disassembly.
  • Powering the Auger: When using the M12™ TRAPSNAKE™ Driver or a drill, ensure it is set to the forward position for clockwise rotation. The trigger controls the speed, from 0 RPM to full speed. For auger handle use, rotate the handle in a clockwise motion.
  • Inserting Auger into Drain: Unclip the cable, pull back the cable sleeve to expose the cable tip at the boot, and carefully insert the boot into the drain. The boot must be in the drain to support the cable and prevent whipping, which could damage porcelain.
  • Advancing the Cable: With the driver or drill in forward mode (or rotating the auger handle clockwise), pull the trigger (or push down on the handle) to advance the cable into the drain. If the cable binds, switch to reverse to free it, then return to forward.
  • Releasing Second Half of Cable: To extend the cable, pull up the cable sleeve to expose lock indicator slots, push down the lower grip to lock the cable, push the detent button, and pull up the cable sleeve until it locks into the next detent hole. Then, pull up the lower grip to unlock the cable and continue feeding.
  • Removing Blockage: Once the clog is reached, move the tool back and forth until the obstruction is cleared. If the tool binds, release the trigger immediately. The toilet auger can also retrieve obstructions.
  • Unbinding Auger Cables: If the cable becomes stuck, switch the driver/drill to reverse (or rotate the auger handle counterclockwise) and withdraw the tool a few inches to free the cable. Stop the tool, then switch back to forward.
  • Removing Cable from Drain: Set the driver/drill to forward (or rotate the auger handle clockwise), pull the trigger slightly (or pull up on the handle), and pull the tool back to retract the cable.
  • Returning Second Half of Cable: To retract the extended cable, pull up the cable sleeve, push down the lower grip to lock the cable, push the detent button, and push the cable sleeve down until it locks into the top detent hole. Pull up the lower grip to unlock and continue retracting.
  • Safety Precautions: Always wear eye protection and leather gloves. Only use battery-operated drills in driving-mode at low speed (never above 550 RPM and 50%-drill torque) to prevent cable breakage and injury. Do not use corded drills. Inspect the drain for chemicals and determine access points, sizes, and lengths before use. Use common sense and caution.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the TRAPSNAKE™ augers.

  • General Tool Maintenance: Keep the tool, battery pack, and charger in good repair. Inspect for undue noise, misalignment, binding of moving parts, breakage, or any other condition affecting operation. Return the tool to a MILWAUKEE service facility for repair or inspection every six months to a year, depending on use. Clean battery pack contacts if the tool doesn't operate at full power.
  • Cleaning: Keep the tool clean, dry, and free of oil or grease. Use mild soap and a damp cloth. Avoid cleaning agents and solvents harmful to plastics (e.g., gasoline, turpentine, lacquer thinner, paint thinner, chlorinated cleaning solvents, ammonia, household detergents containing ammonia). Never immerse the tool, battery pack, or charger in liquid.
  • Cleaning Cables: Thoroughly flush cables with water after every use to prevent damage from sediment and drain cleaning compounds. Wear leather gloves, dry the cable completely, and then wipe it with an oiled rag.
  • Cable Replacement: Replace worn or damaged cables as needed. The manual provides instructions for removing and installing the cable. This involves removing the auger handle/driver, unclipping the cable, removing screws from the handle cap, and manipulating the cable sleeve and detent button to extract and insert the cable. Ensure the cable anchor detent button is properly aligned and seated during installation. Hand-tighten screws to avoid stripping plastic. Remove the protective tip from new cables before use.
  • Repairs: All repairs should be performed by a qualified service person using identical replacement parts to ensure tool safety. Never service damaged battery packs; this should only be done by the manufacturer or authorized service providers.
