Overview

The Milwaukee M18™ SWITCH TANK™ is a versatile battery-powered base designed to be paired with various tank assemblies for a range of applications, including spraying pesticides, fertilizers, concrete sealants, curing compounds, form oil, and for water supply tasks. This system prioritizes user safety and operational efficiency, offering a modular design that allows users to easily switch between different tank types based on the job at hand.

Function Description

The core of the system is the M18™ SWITCH TANK™ Powered Base, which houses the battery compartment and the pump mechanism. This base is designed to securely connect with different tank assemblies: the Sprayer Tank Assembly (49-16-28PS), the Concrete Sprayer Tank Assembly (49-16-28CS), and the Water Supply Tank Assembly (49-16-28WS). Each tank assembly is tailored for specific liquids and applications, ensuring optimal performance and preventing cross-contamination of chemicals.

For spraying applications (pesticides, fertilizers, concrete chemicals), the tank assemblies come equipped with a spray wand, trigger handle, and various nozzles (adjustable, fan, stream) to control the spray pattern and flow rate. The trigger handle includes a lock-on feature for extended use, reducing user fatigue. The system also features a flow rate dial, allowing users to select from five different flow settings to match the job requirements and chemical manufacturer's instructions. An On/Off switch with an indicator light provides clear operational status.

For water supply applications, the Water Supply Tank Assembly (49-16-28WS) is designed to provide a steady flow of water, featuring a water nozzle and a quick-connect fitting for easy hose attachment. This tank is specifically intended for clean water use, preventing the introduction of chemicals into the water supply.

The backpack design, common to all tank assemblies, includes adjustable shoulder straps, a waist strap, and a chest strap to ensure a secure and comfortable fit, even when the tank is full and heavy. Tank hooks and latches firmly secure the tank to the base, preventing accidental detachment during use. Gallon and liter markings on the side of the tanks provide clear indicators for filling and monitoring liquid levels. A removable strainer is integrated into the tank cap to prevent debris from entering and potentially clogging or damaging the pump.

Usage Features

Operating the M18™ SWITCH TANK™ system involves a straightforward process, emphasizing safety and ease of use. Before any operation, users must ensure the battery pack is properly inserted and latched into the base, and the battery door is securely closed. The system is powered by an M18™ battery, which should be charged using the manufacturer-specified charger.

To begin, the appropriate tank assembly is filled with the desired liquid, following the chemical manufacturer's instructions for mixing and handling. It is crucial to remove the tank from the base before filling to prevent exposing the base to harsh chemicals. The integrated strainer should always be in place during filling to filter out debris. For spraying tasks, the spray wand is connected to the trigger handle, and the desired nozzle is screwed on. The adjustable nozzle allows for customization of the spray pattern by tightening or loosening. For water supply, the quick-connect fitting is used to attach the water supply hose.

Once the tank is filled and secured to the base, and the straps are adjusted for comfort, the user can turn on the sprayer by pressing the On/Off switch. The Power LED will illuminate green, indicating the tool is active. Liquid flow is initiated by pulling the trigger on the spray wand. For prolonged spraying, the trigger lock-on feature can be engaged by pulling the trigger and pushing in the lock-on button. To stop the flow, the trigger is released. The flow rate can be adjusted using the dial on the base, allowing for precise control over the application.

Safety is paramount during operation. Users are reminded to always wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as recommended by the chemical manufacturer and to ensure eye protection is worn. The tool should not be used in explosive atmospheres or near flammable liquids, gases, or dust. It is also advised to avoid spraying on windy days to prevent unintended drift of chemicals. After use, the sprayer should be turned off, and any remaining liquid in the spray wand should be drained by pointing the tool downwards until dripping stops.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is essential to ensure the longevity and safe operation of the M18™ SWITCH TANK™ system. This includes proper cleaning, storage, and periodic inspection of components.

After each use, especially when using chemicals, the tank must be drained and thoroughly cleaned. This involves removing the tank from the base, emptying any remaining liquid into a suitable container, and then filling the tank about one-third full with clean water and a small amount of mild household detergent. The cap is reinstalled, and the tank is gently sloshed to mix the water. This cleaning solution is then sprayed out until the tank is empty, ensuring the spray is directed toward an area that will not be damaged by residue chemicals. This procedure should be repeated with clean water until the tank is thoroughly clean. The outside of the nozzles and the tank should be wiped clean and dry with a cloth. All parts must be allowed to completely dry before reassembling and storing. The strainer should always be reinserted before replacing the tank cap. It is critical not to store chemicals in the tank, as they can degrade seals and hoses over time.

The electrical contacts between the bottom of the tank and the base should be kept clean. Before cleaning these contacts, the battery pack must be removed from the tool. A dry, clean cloth should be used for this purpose. The tool, battery pack, and charger should never be immersed in liquid, and bleach should not be used as a cleaning agent.

Users are encouraged to adopt a regular maintenance program, inspecting the tool for any signs of wear, such as cracked or deteriorated hoses, leaks, clogged nozzles, or damaged parts. Any issues like undue noise, misalignment, or binding of moving parts should prompt a return to a MILWAUKEE service facility for repair. The tool, battery pack, and charger should also be returned for inspection after six months to one year of use, depending on frequency.

For storage, the sprayer should be kept indoors in a secure, well-ventilated space with the tank empty. The spray wand should be stored securely in its designated area on the tool. These maintenance practices help reduce the risk of injury, damage to the tool, and ensure consistent performance.
