Overview

This document outlines the process for updating the firmware of a MiraScreen K6 dongle via a Windows-based PC. The update is performed using a dedicated PC tool, referred to as the MiraScreen Repair Tool.

Function Description:

The MiraScreen K6 is a wireless display dongle that allows users to mirror content from their devices to a larger screen. This manual specifically details the procedure for updating the dongle's firmware, which is essential for maintaining optimal performance, adding new features, and resolving potential issues. The update process involves connecting the dongle to a PC, installing necessary drivers, entering a special download mode by shorting specific pins on the NAND Flash memory, and then using the MiraScreen Repair Tool to download and install the new firmware.

Important Technical Specifications (Implied):

  • Compatibility: The firmware update process is designed for Windows-based PCs, with Windows 7 or above recommended.
  • Connectivity: Requires a Micro USB cable to connect the MiraScreen dongle to the PC.
  • Internal Components: The process involves interacting with the NAND Flash memory on the dongle's PCB, specifically by shorting pins 7 and 8. This indicates the presence of a NAND Flash memory chip for storing firmware.
  • Firmware Version: The examples show a firmware version format like "1.4040.1", suggesting a structured versioning system.
  • Operating System: The driver installation process explicitly mentions "64 Bit Operating System" (amd64), indicating compatibility with 64-bit Windows environments.

Usage Features:

The primary usage feature described here is the ability to perform a self-service firmware update using a PC. This empowers users to keep their MiraScreen K6 dongle up-to-date without needing to send it for service.

The update process involves several key steps:

  1. Preparation:
    • Required Tools: A Micro USB cable for connection, a paper pin for short-circuiting pins, and a Windows PC (Win 7 or above).
    • Software Download: Users must download the MiraScreen Repair Tool to their PC.
  2. Software Installation:
    • Uncompressing Files: The downloaded update package needs to be uncompressed.
    • Driver Installation: The usb_driver folder within the uncompressed package contains an "install" batch file (e.g., install.bat) that must be run to install the necessary drivers for the MiraScreen dongle to be recognized by the PC. The command prompt output confirms successful driver installation for a specific USB VID/PID (e.g., USB\VID_0BDA&PID_1195).
    • Launching the Update Tool: After driver installation, the EZCastUpdate.exe file is launched to open the firmware update application.
  3. Hardware Preparation (Disassembly and Download Mode):
    • Disassembly: The MiraScreen dongle's case must be carefully opened along its parting line to access the internal PCB.
    • Entering Download Mode: This is a critical step that requires manual intervention:
      • Plug the Micro USB connector of the USB cable into the MiraScreen dongle.
      • Using a paper pin, short pins 7 and 8 of the NAND Flash memory (counting from bottom up).
      • While keeping these two pins shorted, plug the USB Type-A connector of the USB cable into the PC.
      • Once the USB cable is connected to the PC, a wizard window (Download) should pop up, guiding through USB driver installation if needed. At this point, the paper pin (tweezers) can be removed. The EZCastUpdate_v1.10 application should display "Device connected".
  4. Firmware Update Execution:
    • Download Firmware: Click the "Download" button within the EZCastUpdate application. The application will show the firmware download progress. An internet connection is required for this step.
    • Upgrade Firmware: After the firmware is downloaded, the "Download" button will change to "Upgrade". Click "Upgrade" to initiate the firmware installation onto the dongle. The application will show the update progress.
    • Troubleshooting: If the app shows a question mark, re-plugging the USB cable is advised to continue the update.
    • Completion: Upon successful update, the application will display "Upgrade Success!" and prompt the user to restart power manually.

Maintenance Features:

The entire document serves as a guide for a specific maintenance task: firmware updating. This allows users to:

  • Resolve Software Issues: New firmware often includes bug fixes and stability improvements.
  • Enhance Performance: Updates can optimize the dongle's operation.
  • Add New Functionality: Future firmware releases might introduce new features or improve compatibility with various devices and operating systems.
  • Self-Service Repair: By providing a detailed, step-by-step guide, the manufacturer enables users to perform this maintenance task themselves, reducing the need for professional repair services.
  • Driver Management: The process includes explicit steps for installing and verifying USB drivers, which is a common maintenance aspect for hardware devices.
  • Visual Cues: The EZCastUpdate application provides visual feedback (e.g., "Device connected," progress bars, "Upgrade Success!") to guide the user through the process and confirm successful completion.
