Overview

The Mitsumi FX Series CD-ROM Drive is an internal IDE CD-ROM drive designed for optimal performance and reliability. It utilizes a combination of Constant Angular Velocity (CAV) and Constant Linear Velocity (CLV) modes to vary the spin rate, making it suitable for quick software installations, running CD-ROM based databases, and demanding multimedia applications.

Function Description:

The drive is capable of reading various compact disc formats that meet international standards, including Photo CD, ISO 9660, multi-session, CD-Extra, and XA (eXtended Architecture) discs. It connects to a PC system using the ATAPI/IDE (Advanced Technology Attachment Packet Interface/Integrated Drive Electronics) standard, allowing it to work with device drivers supplied by operating systems like Microsoft Windows 95/98, NT, and IBM OS/2. This means the CD-ROM drive can be controlled through an existing IDE interface on the motherboard or an expansion card. While some sound cards offer an IDE connection, it is recommended to connect the CD-ROM drive to a PCI-based IDE port for maximum performance.

The drive can be configured as a "slave" to an existing hard drive on the same cable (daisy-chaining), or as a "master" if it's the only device on a second IDE controller port. It can also be connected to a 40-pin IDE port on a sound card, though specific compatibility and configuration steps may be required.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Interface: ATAPI/IDE (Advanced Technology Attachment Packet Interface/Integrated Drive Electronics).
  • Connectors (Rear View):
    • Audio Line Out Connector: Stereo audio output to a sound card.
    • Device Configuration Jumper: Sets slave/master setting (CS - Cable Select, SL - Slave, MA - Master). Factory default is slave.
    • Interface Connector: 40-pin ribbon IDE interface cable connection. Pin 1 is indicated by a colored stripe on the cable.
    • Power Supply Connector: Supplies power from a standard PC AT power supply.
  • Mounting Screws: Type M3, length 5mm (0.2 inch) maximum.
  • Driver Software: MS-DOS device driver (MTMCDAI.SYS) for MS-DOS mode, available on a 3.5-inch floppy diskette or for download from www.mitsumi.com. Windows 95/98 uses its generic IDE protected mode driver.
  • MSCDEX: Microsoft CD-ROM Extensions (MSCDEX.EXE) for assigning DOS drive letters and interpreting CD-ROM file format.
  • Audio Playback: Supports stereo audio output via a 4-pin audio cable to a sound card for audio files (.WAV or .MID) and directly through the headphone jack for CD Audio.
  • Drive Letters: DOS automatically reserves A-E. For additional drives, LASTDRIVE=x needs to be added to CONFIG.SYS.
  • IDE Port Base Addresses (xxx): 1f0 (Primary Channel 1), 170 (Secondary Channel 2), 1e8 (Channel 3), 168 (Channel 4).
  • Interrupt Request Channels (yy): 14 (Primary Channel 1), 15 or 10 (Secondary Channel 2), 12 or 11 (Channel 3), 10 or 9 (Channel 4).
  • Audio Play Mode (/A:n): /A:0 or /A:1 for stereo CD, /A:1 for monaural (left or right channel only). Default n=0.
  • Door Lock/Unlock (/U:n): /U:0 for unlocked.
  • Language Options (/L:xx): GR (German), FR (French), SP (Spanish), IT (Italian), JP (Japanese).

Usage Features:

  • Installation Flexibility: Can be installed in either a horizontal or vertical position. Newer models have 4 notches in the disc tray to prevent discs from falling out when mounted vertically. Older models with 2 notches should be mounted with the notches at the bottom.
  • Disc Tray: Opens and closes for disc loading and removal via the Open/Close button. An emergency eject hole is provided for manual opening when power is unavailable (requires a paper clip).
  • Busy Lamp: Illuminates during data access or audio playback.
  • Headphone Jack: Accepts a stereo mini plug for direct audio output.
  • Headphone Volume Control: Adjusts the sound level from the headphone jack.
  • Software Installation: A straightforward process using the provided diskette. For Windows 95/98, the system's "Add New Hardware" wizard is used, which typically detects the drive automatically.
  • Drive Testing: The Disc Inspector (DI.EXE) program on the utility diskette allows for testing mechanical, interface, audio channel, data transfer, and performance aspects of the drive in MS-DOS mode.
  • CD-ROM Caching: Smartdrive (MS-DOS 6.2 or later) includes CD-ROM disc caching, which can be disabled by adding a /U switch to the SMARTDRV.EXE line in AUTOEXEC.BAT if issues arise with certain CDs (e.g., Photo CD).

Maintenance Features:

  • Safety Precautions:
    • Always unplug the computer power cord before working inside the enclosure.
    • Do not attempt to service the drive yourself; there are no user-serviceable parts inside. Opening the unit voids the warranty and exposes to dangerous voltage levels and laser beams.
    • All service procedures should be performed by an authorized dealer or distributor.
    • Start with low speaker volume when playing CD audio to avoid damage due to the lower noise level compared to analog audio sources.
  • Drive Care:
    • Avoid dropping or jolting the drive to protect delicate lens and prism components.
    • Keep the drive away from liquids, dust, and smoke.
    • Clean the exterior with a clean, soft cloth dampened with water; avoid thinners, benzene, or alcohol-based solvents.
    • Do not install in locations exceeding maximum operating temperature.
    • Use only discs bearing the "COMPACT disc" logo.
    • Never place anything on top of the disc tray except a disc, and do not push down on an open disc tray.
  • Disc Handling:
    • Keep discs clean using a soft, clean cloth dampened with water or a commercial disc cleaning solution. Dry thoroughly.
    • Wipe discs radially from the center to the edge, never in a circular motion, to prevent scratches that can make the disc unreadable.
    • Avoid touching the disc surface; handle discs by their edges.
    • Never write on the label side of a disc with a ball-point pen or pencil, as this can damage the data layer.
    • Avoid exposing discs to direct sunlight, high temperatures, or high humidity.
    • Store discs in cases to prevent dust, dirt, scratches, and bending.
    • Never bend a disc.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a dedicated section for common problems, including issues with drive detection, disc tray operation, drive letters, and audio playback. It recommends checking cable connections, jumper settings, and software configurations. Mitsumi's website also offers solutions and updated drivers.
  • Technical Support: Users are encouraged to first consult the troubleshooting section and run the Disc Inspector program, noting any errors. When contacting support, providing information such as the drive's model/serial number, data cable connection location, driver version, operating system, computer brand/model, processor speed, and printouts of AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files is crucial for efficient diagnosis. Support is available via the Mitsumi website (www.mitsumi.com) and a toll-free phone number (800-MITSUMI).
