Constructed from PVC pipe and fittings, this chair offers a combination of durability, adjustability, and user comfort. The assembly instructions provided detail a step-by-step process for setting up the chair, ensuring all components are correctly installed and secured for safe operation.

Function Description:

The primary function of the MJM Reclining Shower Chair is to provide a safe and comfortable seating solution for individuals during showering and toileting. Its reclining feature allows for various user positions, accommodating different needs and comfort levels. The inclusion of a commode pail (optional) further enhances its utility by enabling in-chair toileting, reducing the need for transfers and improving user dignity. The chair's design emphasizes ease of use for both the user and the caregiver, with features aimed at simplifying transfers and adjustments.

Important Technical Specifications:

The chair's construction utilizes healthcare-grade PVC pipe and fittings, known for their resistance to corrosion, moisture, and bacteria, making them ideal for wet environments. The assembly process involves securing various components with 1/2" and 1" retaining screws, utilizing predrilled holes for precise alignment. A Phillips screwdriver or a cordless hand drill is recommended for tightening all screws, ensuring a secure and stable structure. The chair is equipped with four casters, two of which are brake-enabled, providing mobility and stability when stationary. The specific components listed for model 196 include:

  • 4 Casters (2 brake, 2 non-brake)
  • 1 Sliding Footrest Support
  • 2 Armrests
  • Elevated Legrest with Cushion
  • Reclining Backrest/Lumbar Support
  • Cushion/Sling Support
  • Push Pull Handle
  • 16 (Sixteen) 1/2" Screws
  • 4 (Four) 1" Screws

Usage Features:

The MJM Reclining Shower Chair offers several features designed to enhance user experience and caregiver convenience:

  • Reclining Backrest: Allows for multiple recline positions, catering to user comfort and specific care requirements during showering.
  • Elevated Legrest with Cushion: Provides support and comfort for the user's legs, which can be adjusted as needed. The legrest is secured with 1" retaining screws into swivel fittings, allowing for movement.
  • Sliding Footrest: Offers additional foot support and can be adjusted by sliding it into position and securing it with 1/2" retaining screws. This feature helps accommodate users of different heights and provides secure foot placement.
  • Armrests: Integrated into the seat section, these provide lateral support and assist with transfers. They are secured with 1/2" retaining screws.
  • Casters: The four casters (two with brakes) enable easy movement of the chair within the bathroom or shower area. The brakes ensure the chair remains stationary during transfers and use.
  • Push Pull Handle: Attached to the back section, this handle facilitates easy maneuvering of the chair by caregivers. It is secured with 1/2" retaining screws.
  • Cushion/Sling Support: The chair includes a cushion for the elevated legrest, secured with Velcro straps, and a lumbar support for the reclining backrest, secured with snaps. A sling support is also placed on the reclining backrest, enhancing comfort and support.
  • Color-Coded Dots: The assembly instructions emphasize matching color-coded dots during the process, simplifying component identification and ensuring correct assembly.
  • Optional Commode Pail: The chair is designed to accommodate an optional commode pail, transforming it into a versatile toileting aid.

Maintenance Features:

While specific maintenance instructions are not detailed in the provided manual, the design of the MJM Reclining Shower Chair suggests several inherent maintenance advantages:

  • PVC Construction: The use of PVC makes the chair easy to clean and sanitize, as PVC is non-porous and resistant to water, soap, and common disinfectants. This is crucial for maintaining hygiene in a healthcare setting.
  • Secure Fastenings: The reliance on screws for securing components means that parts can be tightened if they become loose over time, ensuring continued stability. The manual explicitly warns about the importance of securing all components, implying that periodic checks of these fastenings are essential for safety.
  • Component Replacement: The modular design, with individual components secured by screws, suggests that parts could be replaced if damaged, extending the lifespan of the chair.
  • Pre-use Checks: The "NOTE" section at the end of the manual highlights critical pre-use checks: "CASTERS, RECLINING BACKREST, ELEVATING LEGREST, SLIDING FOOTREST & PUSH PULL HANDLE MUST BE CHECKED AND SECURED PRIOR TO USING SHOWER CHAIR." This emphasizes the importance of routine safety checks to prevent serious safety hazards.

In summary, the MJM International Corporation Reclining Shower Chair is a robust, adaptable, and user-friendly device designed for safe and comfortable showering and toileting. Its PVC construction, adjustable features, and emphasis on secure assembly contribute to its functionality and suitability for individuals requiring assistance in wet environments. Regular checks of all secured components are paramount to ensure the chair's continued safe operation.
