Overview

The Monaghan AeroChamber Plus® Z STAT® aVHC is a valved holding chamber designed to improve the delivery of medication from metered-dose inhalers (MDIs) to the lungs. It is intended for use by individuals who use an inhaler and provides better control over medication delivery compared to using an inhaler alone with poor technique.

Function Description:

The primary function of the AeroChamber Plus® Z STAT® aVHC is to act as a spacer between the MDI and the patient's mouth or face. When the MDI is actuated into the chamber, the medication is suspended within the chamber, allowing the patient to inhale it slowly and deeply. This process helps to reduce the amount of medication that deposits in the mouth and throat, increasing the amount that reaches the lungs. The valved design ensures that medication remains in the chamber until inhaled, preventing it from escaping prematurely. The Z STAT® feature likely refers to an antistatic property, which helps to prevent medication from sticking to the walls of the chamber, ensuring more consistent and effective delivery.

Important Technical Specifications:

The device is available in various configurations to suit different patient needs, including:

  • Small Mask: Designed for infants and young children, providing a secure and comfortable fit for effective medication delivery.
  • Medium Mask: Suitable for older children and some adults, offering a larger mask area.
  • Mouthpiece: Intended for adults and older children who can form a tight seal around the mouthpiece and follow breath-holding instructions.
  • Large Mask: For adults requiring a larger mask for optimal fit and seal.

The chamber is designed to be compatible with most standard metered-dose inhalers (MDIs). It is explicitly stated that the device has not been made (or manufactured) with BPA (Bisphenol A) or Natural Rubber Latex, which is an important consideration for patients with allergies or sensitivities to these materials.

Usage Features:

The quick start guide outlines a simple, step-by-step process for using the AeroChamber Plus® Z STAT® aVHC:

  1. Preparation: Remove the caps from both the inhaler (MDI) and the chamber's mouthpiece.
  2. Shake Inhaler: Shake the inhaler thoroughly as per its instructions.
  3. Insert Inhaler: Insert the inhaler into the back piece of the chamber.
  4. Application: Apply the mouthpiece to the face, ensuring a tight seal, or place the mask firmly over the nose and mouth.
  5. Actuation and Inhalation: Press the inhaler once to release medication into the chamber. Immediately after, breathe in slowly and deeply. For mouthpiece users, hold breath for 5 to 10 seconds or take 2 to 3 breaths. For mask users, count for 5 to 6 breaths. This slow, deep breathing and breath-holding technique allows the medication to settle in the lungs.
  6. Repeat: Repeat steps 2 to 5 as prescribed by a healthcare professional, typically allowing a short pause between actuations if multiple doses are required.

The visual aids in the guide clearly differentiate between using an inhaler alone with poor technique (showing medication depositing in the throat) and using an inhaler with a valved holding chamber (showing medication reaching the lungs).

Maintenance Features:

The quick start guide also provides instructions for cleaning the chamber to ensure hygiene and proper function:

  1. Disassembly: Remove only the back piece of the chamber.
  2. Soaking: Soak the disassembled chamber in soapy water for 15 minutes.
  3. Agitation and Rinsing: Gently agitate the chamber components in the soapy water, then rinse them thoroughly under running water.
  4. Drying: Shake out any excess water and allow the components to air dry vertically.
  5. Reassembly: Once completely dry, reassemble the chamber.

For more detailed cleaning instructions, including dishwasher compatibility, users are advised to refer to the complete instructions packaged with the device. The dishwasher instructions are specifically mentioned as being available in the full manual. Regular cleaning is crucial to prevent medication residue buildup, which could affect the device's performance and hygiene.

In summary, the Monaghan AeroChamber Plus® Z STAT® aVHC is a user-friendly, latex- and BPA-free valved holding chamber designed to optimize MDI medication delivery to the lungs, available in various sizes to accommodate different patient populations, and easily maintained through simple cleaning procedures.
