Why does my Monessen Hearth EYF18-R shut off during use?

  Your Monessen Hearth Heater might shut off during use due to several reasons: not enough fresh air for the ODS/pilot to operate, so open a window or door for ventilation; low line pressure, in which case you should contact your local gas company; a partially clogged ODS/pilot, requiring cleaning; a defective thermopile, inspect wire connections and ensure the output is 500 mV across TH/TP and TP terminals with the ON/OFF switches off; or restrictions in incoming airflow, so check for a bottom riser on the glass door, a sunken fireplace, or excessive lava rock/cinders densely packed against the grate.

  If you smell gas from your Monessen Hearth Heater even when the control knob is in the OFF position, there are two possible causes: a gas leak, which requires you to locate and correct all leaks, or a defective control valve, which means you'll need to replace the control valve.
