Aer you enable Wi-Fi, you need to get within range of a Wi-Fi network. As
applicable, walk, drive, take a bus or cab, or reposition yourself in your home
or office to get within range of the network you’d like to join. Generally, you
need to be within 120 feet of the wireless router if it’s indoors, or within 300
feet of it if it’s outdoors.
Next, follow these steps:
. Look for a prompt in the status bar that notifies you that Wi-Fi net-
works are available.
. Tap that prompt to view the available networks.
. Tap the network you want to join.
. If the network is “open” and does not require credentials, you’ll be con-
nected. If not, you’ll be prompted to input Wi-Fi credentials.
inpUtting Wi-Fi CredentialS
When connecting to a private Wi-Fi network or a protected public one, you’ll be
prompted to input credentials. This is used to protect the network from unau-
thorized access. If it’s your own network, you probably know what to input. If it’s
a protected public Wi-Fi network such as what you might find in a hotel or bar,
you have to ask the proprietor. He or she may require you sign up for a library
card, buy a cup of coffee, or even rent a hotel room for the privilege.
To input Wi-Fi credentials, follow these steps:
. Locate the network to join and tap it. If you don’t see any networks,
verify that Wi-Fi and Network notification is enabled, and that you
are within range of the network. To view all available networks, do
the following:
. Tap the Open Apps icon.
. Tap Seings.
. Tap Wireless & Networks.
. Under Wi-Fi Networks, select the network from the list.
. When prompted for credentials, use the keyboard to enter them, as
shown in Figure 1-14. You can hide the keyboard by tapping the down
arrow in the boom-le corner. To show the keyboard, tap inside any
area on the screen that accepts text.
