Overview

The Mueller UltraToast 2 Slice Toaster, model MT-220SS, is an electrical appliance designed for toasting various types of sliced bread and pastries. Its primary function is to brown bread to a desired level, offering convenience and versatility for breakfast or snack preparation.

Function Description:

The toaster operates by heating elements that brown bread placed within its toasting slots. It features a loading lever that, when pressed down, lowers the bread into the heating chamber and initiates the toasting cycle. This lever will only lock into place if the toaster is properly plugged into a power source. The device is equipped with a browning level button, allowing users to select from six different browning settings, ranging from light to dark toast. An LED display indicates the currently selected browning level. Once a browning level is chosen, it is saved for future toasting sessions unless manually changed.

Beyond basic toasting, the UltraToast offers two specialized functions: Reheat and Defrost. The Reheat function is designed to warm up cold, previously toasted bread without further browning it. When activated, the Reheat Indicator Light illuminates, and the toaster runs a short, approximately 33-second cycle. During reheating, the LED display turns off, and the browning level function is not active. The Defrost function allows users to toast frozen bread items directly from the freezer. When the Defrost button is pressed, the Defrost Indicator Light illuminates, and the LED display shows a browning level setting, which can be adjusted as needed. This feature adds extra time to the toasting cycle to first defrost the bread before browning it.

The toasting process can be stopped at any time by pressing the Cancel/Eject button. This action immediately halts the operation, and the loading lever raises the bread to its fully elevated position, allowing for safe removal.

Usage Features:

Before initial use, it is recommended to remove all packaging and wipe down the exterior with a damp cloth. To disperse any initial burning smell from the heating elements, the toaster should be operated twice on Browning Level 1 without any bread. After this initial step, it is important to always use the toaster with a bread slice in the slot to prevent overheating.

The toaster accommodates various sliced bread types and pastries, including bagels, tea cakes, thickly sliced breads, and English muffins. Users should avoid forcing oversized, extra-thick, bent, damaged, or torn bread slices into the slots, as this can cause jamming. Buttered bread or items with any type of spread or topping should not be toasted.

When toasting, users should consider the moisture content and thickness of the bread. Drier or thinner slices will toast quicker, suggesting a lower browning setting. Conversely, fresh bread, whole wheat bread, or breads with uneven surfaces may require a higher setting. Thickly cut items, such as crumpets or thick French toast, may need longer toasting times, potentially requiring two cycles due to higher moisture content. For raisin or other fruit breads, loose raisins should be removed from the surface to prevent them from falling into the toaster or burning. Bagels should be sliced into two equal halves before toasting. Uneven toasting is often a result of uneven bread slice thickness.

For the Defrost function, recommended browning levels vary based on the item: levels 1-2 for refrigerated breads and thinner frozen items like pancakes; levels 3-4 for toaster pastries, frozen waffles, thin French toast, and refrigerated bagels; and levels 5-6 for thicker frozen items such as bagels, hand-cut bread, and thick French toast.

The toaster should not be operated for more than 60 minutes within a 2-hour period to prevent overheating. It is designed for household use only and should not be used outdoors or under direct sunlight.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the toaster's longevity and safe operation. Before any cleaning or maintenance, the toaster must be unplugged from the power outlet and allowed to cool down completely. The unit should never be immersed in water or other liquids, and abrasive cloths or cleaning agents should be avoided. The exterior, including the top of the bread slot, can be wiped clean with a damp cloth and then dried thoroughly with another cloth or paper towel.

The toaster features a removable crumb tray, which collects crumbs that fall from the bread during toasting. This tray should be emptied regularly to prevent crumb build-up, which can pose a fire hazard. To remove crumbs, the toaster should first be lightly tapped on its sides to dislodge any trapped crumbs. Then, the crumb tray can be slid out and emptied. For any remaining bread pieces inside the toaster, it can be turned upside down over a trash bin and gently shaken. A clean, dry pastry brush can also be used to reach crumbs clinging to the interior. It is critical never to use pointed or sharp articles for cleaning the inside of the toaster, as this can damage the appliance and create a safety hazard. After cleaning, the crumb tray should be wiped clean with a damp cloth, dried thoroughly, and then slid back into the toaster until it locks into position. The toaster should never be operated without the crumb tray in place.

For storage, the toaster should be unplugged and allowed to cool completely. The power cord can be wrapped around the cord storage area on the underside of the toaster. It should be stored in an upright position on a flat surface, such as a benchtop or in an accessible cupboard. Nothing should be stored on top of the toaster. Any servicing beyond basic cleaning should be performed by an authorized service representative.
