Overview

This document describes the programming and operation of an Astro-switching device, model SC 28. It covers various modes, key functions, programming advice, installation details, and examples of use.

Function Description

The Astro-switching device is designed to control electrical equipment based on astronomical events (sunrise and sunset) and programmed time schedules. It features multiple operating modes, including AUTO for automatic operation, PR for programming switching commands, and ? for displaying and altering switching times. The device can manage up to two channels, allowing independent control of different circuits.

Astro-function: The core of the device's functionality lies in its Astro-function. It aligns the OFF switch function with sunrise and the ON switch function with sunset. Each switch-time can be programmed as either an Astro-switch time or a normal switch-time. For two-channel versions, each channel can be programmed independently for Astro or normal switching. When the Astro-function is selected for a switch-time, the sunrise (turning off) and sunset (turning on) times for the current day are displayed. These times can be adjusted, and the device automatically modifies them daily according to the chosen Astro-table. The difference (offset) between the entered switch-time and the sunrise/set-time remains fixed for subsequent operations. Programmed switching times (mode P) and indicated Astro-switch times (mode ?) are always applied exclusively to the current day. In AUTO mode, the current sunset time can be read by pressing the O.K. button, and the current sunrise time by pressing O.K. twice. In ? mode, the matching Astro-table must be selected as the first step.

Summer/Winter Time Changeover (S/W mode): The device supports automatic summer/winter time changeover. Users can activate or deactivate this feature. When activated, the device automatically adjusts Astro-switch times and other programmed times according to the "European Regulation" (last Sunday in March for start, last Sunday in October for end).

Permanent Override: In AUTO mode, a manual override function is available. Pressing key A or B for 3 seconds will switch ON or OFF PERM override, suppressing programmed switching functions for the relevant channel. Holding the key down for another 3 seconds will cancel the permanent override.

Usage Features

Key Functions: The device utilizes several keys for navigation and programming:

  • Arrow keys (◆): Used to alter flashing digits or positions in PR, ?, and S/W modes. In ? mode, they change selected inputs.
  • O.K. key: Confirms the selected mode. In PR and modes, it advances to the next required position (forwards). In ? mode, it advances to the next switching time. In S/W mode, it enters data into memory.
  • ✔ key: In PR and modes, it returns to the previous required position (backwards). In ? mode, it returns to the previous switching time.
  • CL key: Clears single or all switching times. Pressing it twice cancels all switching times if the number of free memory locations is displayed.
  • Diamond key (◆): Increases the value of a flashing digit. In S/W mode, it selects automatic S/W time change ON or OFF.

Operating Modes:

  • AUTO Mode: Displays time, day of week, current switch status, and a bar graph of ON time. It also shows current sunset/sunrise times. Manual overriding is possible.
  • PR Mode: Allows input of switching commands based on weekdays and time. Users alter flashing digits using arrow and O.K. keys, and increase values with the diamond key. The last input is confirmed with O.K.
  • ? Mode: Displays the number of free memory locations, selects the Astro-table, shows/alters switching times, and clears single or all switching times. O.K. and ✔ keys navigate switching times, while the diamond key changes them. CL key cancels displayed switching times.
  • Mode: Used for inputting the actual date and time. Arrow and O.K. keys alter flashing digits, and the diamond key increases values. Confirmation with O.K. enters data and switches to AUTO mode.
  • S/W Mode: Activates or deactivates the summer/winter time changeover. The diamond key selects ON or OFF, and O.K. confirms the input.

Programming Advice:

  • The device comes with a default setting of real-time and date, with summertime change activated.
  • Programming is done step-by-step, with the appropriate position flashing for changes using the ◆ key. O.K. advances to the next position, and ✔ goes back. Inputs are terminated when flashing stops.
  • The device has a battery power reserve, allowing programming even without external power or during a supply interruption by pressing the O.K. button to activate the display.

Astro-table Selection: Before programming switching commands, the installation time zone must be selected. A different Astro-table can be chosen at any time, and programmed Astro-switch times are automatically recalculated. The manual provides a table of predefined Astro-tables for various geographical locations (e.g., Scotland, England North/South, Ireland, Germany North/Middle/East/South, France Middle/North East/North West/South East/South West, Italy North/Middle/South, Swiss North East/East/South, Austrian North/South). Custom Astro-tables are available upon request.

Maintenance Features

Installation Details:

  • Installation and assembly of electrical equipment must be carried out only by a skilled person.
  • The device should be connected to voltage and frequency according to its type label.
  • The warranty is void if the housing is opened by unauthorized personnel.
  • The high-density electronic circuit is protected against external influences, but incorrect operation may occur if these limits are exceeded.

Reset Function: Pressing the recessed button in the middle of the ✔ key and CL key simultaneously will clear the date, real time, and microprocessor. Switching programs are normally not affected, but it is recommended to check by Read-Out in "?" mode. This action is typically performed when the date and real time need to be reprogrammed.
