Overview

This document is an instruction book for a Murray Select lawn tractor, model 425001x8B. It provides information on operation, maintenance, and repair parts.

Function Description

The Murray Select lawn tractor is designed for mowing lawns and can be equipped with various accessories to perform other tasks. It features a blade rotation control to start and stop the blades, a clutch/brake pedal for both clutching and braking, a headlight switch for illumination, an ignition switch for starting and stopping the engine, a shift lever to change ground speed, a lift lever to adjust the cutting height, a parking brake lever to engage the brake when leaving the unit, and a throttle control lever to adjust engine speed.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Model: 425001x8B
  • Tire Pressure: 14 PSI (1 BAR) for all tires.
  • Battery: 12-volt, requires charging every three months for electric start models.
  • Fuel: Regular unleaded gasoline. Do not use premium unleaded gasoline or gasohol (ethanol or methanol mixture) as it can damage the fuel system.
  • Oil: Refer to the engine manufacturer's instructions for the correct type and level.
  • Blade Torque: 35 foot pounds (47.5 N-m) for the blade nut.
  • Adjuster Knobs Torque: 7 foot pounds (9.5 N-m) for plastic adjuster knobs, 10 foot pounds (13.5 N-m) for metal adjuster knobs.
  • Fuse: Automotive fuse.

Usage Features

  • Starting the Engine: Depress the clutch/brake pedal, ensure the shift lever is in neutral (N), confirm the blade rotation control is in the DISENGAGE position, move the throttle control to CHOKE or FAST, and turn the ignition key to START.
  • Mowing: Operate the engine with the throttle in the FAST position for better performance and even grass discharge. Use a slower ground speed for better cutting performance and quality. Mow across slopes, never up or down, with walk-behind mowers. For riding mowers, mow up or down slopes, never across. Avoid mowing wet grass.
  • Cutting Height Adjustment: Use the lift lever to change the height of cut. For a good green lawn, avoid cutting grass too short. Use a lower height in cool months and raise it during hot periods.
  • Slope Operation: Exercise extreme care on slopes. For riding mowers, if you can back straight up a slope, it is generally safe to mow. Do not mow slopes greater than 15 degrees (or 10 degrees if using a pull-behind or rear-mounted attachment). A 15-degree slope increases 2.5 feet in height over 10 feet, and a 10-degree slope increases 1.7 feet in height over 10 feet.
  • Attachments: The tractor can be used with various attachments such as a lawn sweeper, snow blade, grass bagger (9-bushel and 7-bushel capacities), mulcher kits (38", 40", 42"), garden tiller, tire chains, and rear wheel weights.
  • Safety Features: The unit includes an operator presence switch in the seat that stops the engine if the operator leaves the seat while the blade engagement control is engaged or the transmission is engaged. Always ensure all safety devices and controls are in place and operating correctly.

Maintenance Features

  • Daily/Before Each Use: Maintain the engine (refer to engine owner's manual), examine blade(s) for cracks/wear/damage, remove debris from the unit and mowing area, examine all rotating/sliding parts, check tire inflation, verify mower housing level, examine V-belts, and check brake operation.
  • After First 5 Hours: Change the oil (refer to engine owner's manual).
  • After 25 Hours: Maintain the engine (refer to engine owner's manual), remove/examine/sharpen/balance blade(s), check adjustments for blade rotation control, brake, clutch, and steering, lubricate chassis and mower housing, and check the muffler (torque, wear/burn out, spark arrestor condition).
  • Before Storage (30+ days): Prepare the engine for storage (drain fuel system, add fuel stabilizer), and prepare the battery for storage (remove, clean terminals, fully charge, store in cool/dry place).
  • Blade Maintenance: Check the blade frequently for bends, cracks, or damage. Replace damaged blades immediately. Sharpen blades regularly for better cutting performance and to reduce engine workload. Replace blades every two years for safety.
  • Mower Housing Maintenance: Clean the top and bottom of the mower housing frequently to ensure proper belt function and prevent fires. Adjust the mower housing level to ensure an even cut.
  • Belt Maintenance: Check all belts for proper placement within guides. Replace motion drive and mower drive belts as needed.
  • Battery Maintenance: Keep terminals clean and charged.
  • Fuel System Maintenance: Drain the fuel system before storage to prevent damage from old fuel.
  • Tire Maintenance: Check tire pressure regularly (14 PSI) to ensure a smooth ride and level cut.
  • Lubrication: Lubricate grease fittings with a grease gun and other areas with engine oil. Use dry graphite spray for the steering gear assembly in sandy areas.
  • Troubleshooting: A dedicated section provides solutions for common problems such as engine not starting, engine running rough, excessive vibration, poor grass discharge, and issues with the mower housing, blades, or drive system.
