Overview

The Nakamichi TD-700E/TD-500E/TD-700D/TD-500D/TD-700/TD-500 is a mobile tuner/cassette deck designed for high-fidelity audio in vehicles. It incorporates Nakamichi's advanced technological know-how to deliver optimal sound quality, particularly in challenging mobile environments.

Function Description

The device serves as both a tuner for FM/AM broadcasts and a cassette deck for tape playback.

  • Tuner Functionality: It allows for reception of FM/AM broadcasts. The tuner can be switched on/off by pushing the Volume Control knob. Stations can be manually tuned or automatically scanned. It supports presetting a total of 12 broadcast stations (6 FM, 6 AM) for the TD-700E and 10 stations (5 FM, 5 AM) for the TD-500E, enabling instant recall. The reception sensitivity can be adjusted between "DX" (ordinary operation) and "Lo" (high field strength areas).
  • Cassette Deck Functionality: The cassette deck is designed for high-performance tape playback. It features a unique Azimuth Fine Tuning control, which allows for precise adjustment of the playback head's azimuth angle to compensate for misalignment between recording and playback decks. This ensures optimal frequency response and fidelity. The deck supports Dolby B-type NR and Dolby C-type NR for noise reduction, selectable via dedicated switches. An Equalizer switch allows selection of the correct playback equalization (70 µs for chrome/metal tapes, 120 µs for normal tapes). Tape transport controls include Fast-Forward, Rewind, and Pause. An Auto Repeat function enables continuous playback of a cassette side. The TD-700E model also includes a Program Seek function, which detects blank spaces between selections to automatically start playback at the beginning of a desired track, allowing up to 10 skips forward and 9 skips in rewind.
  • Audio Control: The unit includes a Fader knob for adjusting front/rear speaker balance in a four-speaker setup, and a Volume Control knob for listening level. Pulling out the Volume Control knob allows adjustment of left/right balance. Tone control knobs (Bass, Midrange, Treble) are provided for adjusting the tonal balance. For the TD-700E, these knobs must be pressed to release them for adjustment and then pushed back in.
  • Display: An LCD panel displays the broadcast frequency, clock time, selected frequency band (FM/AM), and stereo indicator ("ST") when an FM stereo broadcast is received. A Preset Station Indicator shows the station number when a memorized station is called up.

Usage Features

  • Mobile Environment Optimization: Designed specifically for car use, addressing issues like azimuth misalignment common in mobile cassette decks.
  • Azimuth Fine Tuning: A unique feature allowing users to finely adjust the playback head's azimuth angle by ear while a tape is playing, ensuring optimal sound fidelity for any recorded tape.
  • Motor-driven Eject and Loading: Simplifies cassette handling.
  • Auto Repeat Function: For continuous playback of a cassette side.
  • Program Seek (TD-700E only): Enables skipping between selections on a tape by detecting blank spaces, enhancing convenience for users with recorded tapes.
  • Direct Switchover: Allows direct transitions between tape operations (e.g., playback to rewind) without needing to press the Pause button.
  • Key-Off Pause: If the ignition is turned off during tape playback, the unit enters a pause mode and resumes playback automatically when the ignition is switched back on.
  • Clock Display: Features a quartz clock that displays actual time in 24-hour notation on the LCD panel when not used for frequency indication.
  • Output Level Selection: A selector switch on the top panel allows setting the output level to "High" or "Low" to match the input sensitivity of the power amplifier.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning the Tape Path: Regular cleaning of the heads, capstan(s), and pressure roller(s) is crucial for maintaining sound quality and preventing tape damage. The manual provides detailed instructions for removing the cleaning flap and cleaning these components using a cleaning pen or cotton-tipped sticks moistened with isopropyl or absolute alcohol.
  • Cassette Handling Precautions:
    • Avoid C-120 cassettes due to thin tape material prone to breaking or snarling.
    • Ensure no tape slack before inserting a cassette to prevent damage.
    • Verify all cassette labels/stickers are firmly glued to prevent interference with eject operation.
    • Store cassettes in their cases, away from high temperatures or humidity, to prevent dust accumulation and tape slackening.
  • Environmental Considerations: Operate the unit only after the car's interior temperature has returned to normal if it has been parked in extreme hot or cold conditions.
  • Fuse Replacement: If a fuse blows, check connections and replace it with an identical new fuse. If it blows again, professional servicing is recommended.
  • Ground Connection: Ensure a secure ground connection to the car's chassis to prevent noise and ensure proper operation.
  • Traffic Safety: Maintain a listening volume that does not mask outside noises while driving.
