Congratulations on your purchase of the Nano Pulsar, a variable shape stereo
tremolo and panner effects pedal. Connected in mono, the Nano Pulsar is a
tremolo that allows signicant control over the shape of the modulating
waveform. Connect the Nano Pulsar in stereo (each output to a separate amp/
mixer channel) and you have a panner pedal that will send your instrument
back and forth between two amps with the same control over waveform shape.
So, while one amp is fading up in volume, the other will be fading down in
volume or even more dramatic: while one amp is on, the other is off. But that’s
not all! Higher settings of the DEPTH knob put the Nano Pulsar into warp mode
where the signal’s volume modulates asymmetrically producing rhythmic,
out-of-phase tremolo effects.
Operating Instructions
Connect your guitar or other instrument to the INPUT jack on the Nano Pulsar
and the MONO/L OUTPUT to your main amp. If running the Nano Pulsar in
stereo, connect the Right OUTPUT jack to another amplier. Apply power if
needed; your Nano Pulsar might already have a 9V battery installed. Press
the footswitch to ensure the STATUS LED is lit, now your Nano Pulsar is
ready to go.
For a nice starter setting, turn all knobs to their 12 o’clock positions and set
the toggle switch—centered within the knobs—to the Triangle position. This
setting will yield a deep, smooth tremolo at a medium rate. Lower the DEPTH
knob for a shallower tremolo effect; play with the RATE knob to hear the
full range of modulation speed on tap; and of course, adjust the VOL knob
for more or less volume at the output jacks.

Overview

The Electro-Harmonix Nano Pulsar is a compact, variable shape stereo tremolo and panner effects pedal. It offers significant control over the modulating waveform's shape, allowing for a wide range of rhythmic and dynamic effects.

Function Description:

When connected in mono (using the MONO/L OUTPUT), the Nano Pulsar functions as a tremolo, modulating the volume of your instrument's signal. In stereo mode (connecting both MONO/L and RIGHT OUTPUT jacks to separate amp/mixer channels), it acts as a panner, sending your instrument's signal back and forth between the two outputs. This creates a spatial effect where one amp's volume fades up while the other fades down, or even more dramatically, one amp is on while the other is off. The pedal also features a "warp mode" at higher DEPTH knob settings, where the signal's volume modulates asymmetrically, producing rhythmic, out-of-phase tremolo effects.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Audio Input Impedance: 2.2MΩ at the INPUT jack.
  • Audio Output Impedance: 600Ω at either OUTPUT jack.
  • Current Draw: 30mA.
  • Maximum Input Signal Level in Bypass (before clipping): +5dBu.
  • Power Supply: Requires 9VDC, center-negative power. Can be powered by an optional 9VDC power supply (30mA minimum) or a 9V battery. Do not exceed 12VDC at the power jack.
  • Modulation Rate Range: Approximately 20 seconds to 30 Hz.

Usage Features:

Controls and Connections:

  • INPUT Jack (7): Audio input for your guitar or other instrument.
  • MONO/L OUTPUT Jack (8): Connects to your main amplifier's input for mono operation. When used in mono, it's recommended to use this jack for consistent SHAPE knob behavior.
  • RIGHT OUTPUT Jack (9): Connects to a second amplifier's input for stereo panning. The SHAPE waveforms are reversed out of this jack compared to the MONO/L output.
  • 9V Power Jack (10): For connecting an optional 9VDC, center-negative power supply.
  • FOOTSWITCH and STATUS LED (6): Press and release to toggle between buffered bypass and effect mode. The STATUS LED lights up and pulses at the effect's rate when active, and is off in bypass mode. The unit powers up in bypass mode.

Knobs and Switches:

  • VOL Knob (1): Adjusts the overall output level of the effect. Turning clockwise increases volume, offering up to 12dB of boost depending on other control settings. Fully counter-clockwise silences the output.
  • SHAPE Switch (2): Selects between Triangle and Square Wave modes, influencing the fundamental character of the modulation.
  • SHAPE Knob (3): Further adjusts the tremolo's modulation waveform shape.
    • Triangle Wave Mode: Produces smooth volume modulation. Turning the SHAPE knob clockwise from minimum to center morphs the waveform from rising sawtooth to triangle. From center to maximum, it morphs from triangle to falling sawtooth. The triangle shapes are reversed out of the Right OUTPUT jack.
    • Square Wave Mode: Produces sharp, on/off volume modulation. Turning the SHAPE knob clockwise from minimum to maximum increases the pulse width from narrow to wide. Near the center, the tremolo volume is loud and quiet in equal amounts. The square shapes are reversed out of the Right OUTPUT jack.
  • DEPTH Knob (4): Adjusts the intensity of the tremolo effect. Turning clockwise increases the amount of tremolo. Maximum tremolo (greatest dynamic range) occurs at approximately 1 o'clock. Beyond 1 o'clock, the tremolo warps, modulating between positive and negative phase with an asymmetric or rhythmic feel. Setting DEPTH to approximately 1 o'clock provides the widest stereo field for panning.
  • RATE Knob (5): Adjusts the speed of the tremolo or pan effect. Turning clockwise increases the modulation rate.

Getting Started:

For a good starting point, set all knobs to their 12 o'clock positions and the toggle switch to the Triangle position. This provides a deep, smooth tremolo at a medium rate. Adjust the DEPTH knob for shallower effects, the RATE knob for different speeds, and the VOL knob for output level.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Replacement: To change the 9-volt battery, remove the four screws on the bottom plate of the Nano Pulsar. Once the screws are removed, the bottom plate can be taken off to access and change the battery. It is advised not to touch the circuit board to avoid damaging components.
  • Power Activation: Plugging into the INPUT jack activates power when using a 9V battery. To prevent battery drain, remove the input cable when the unit is not in use.

Warranty Information:
