Introduction
The PeakFlow A System prevents scale build-up on the inner
pipe surfaces of the heat exchanger inside the tankless water
heater. When installing or using the filter, or when replacing the
filter, be sure to refer to the manual.

Overview

The Navien PeakFlow® A System is a scale prevention system designed to protect tankless water heaters from scale build-up on the inner pipe surfaces of their heat exchangers. It operates as a salt-free system, utilizing a media cartridge to prevent scale formation without adding salt to the water.

Function Description:

The primary function of the PeakFlow A System is to prevent the accumulation of scale, which can degrade the efficiency and lifespan of tankless water heaters. It achieves this by treating the incoming water to mitigate scale-forming minerals. The system is designed for installation in the water supply line leading to the tankless water heater. It is crucial to ensure proper water flow direction during installation, following the arrow indicated on the system's head. The system is intended for use with specific feed water chemistry, and certain contaminants or water treatment methods must be avoided for optimal performance and to maintain warranty validity. For instance, it cannot be used in conjunction with polyphosphate or other scale inhibitors, and polyphosphate must be removed from the feed water before the PeakFlow A System. Similarly, oil and H2S must be removed. The system does not reduce silica scaling, and while silica has a less significant effect on scale formation, it can act as a binder for water spots and residue.

Usage Features:

The PeakFlow A System requires careful installation to ensure proper operation and to avoid damage or injury. It must be installed vertically, upright, and level, secured to a wall stud or an appropriate spanning area. When connecting water supply lines, 2-3 wraps of Teflon® tape should be used on threaded connections, and liquid pipe compounds should be avoided. Overtightening connections is also cautioned against. After installation, it is recommended to let water flow through the system for two minutes at the specified flow rate to allow air bubbles to escape, especially if a drain valve is not present on the outlet side. The system should not be exposed to freezing temperatures; if temperatures drop below 40°F, the water supply to the housing should be shut off and the housing drained. Direct sunlight and exposure to strong chemicals or physical impact from equipment, carts, or mops should be avoided. If a water hammer is present in the plumbing system, a water hammer arrestor should be installed in front of the PeakFlow A System. The system is not to be used with microbiologically unsafe water.

Maintenance Features:

The PeakFlow A System is designed for straightforward maintenance, primarily involving the replacement of its scale prevention media.

  • Media Replacement Frequency: The scale prevention media needs to be replaced every 3 years. However, if the system sizing recommendations have been followed, the media should last two years. The filters should be changed 36 months after installation and at least 36 months after the last filter change. The actual frequency of cartridge replacement will depend on the volume of system usage.
  • Media Replacement Procedure:
    1. Turn off all equipment connected to the PeakFlow A System.
    2. Shut off the water supply at the front end of the system.
    3. Disconnect the plumbing line from the inlet and outlet.
    4. Unscrew the head from the fiberglass tank.
    5. Remove the distributor tube.
    6. Remove the filter media by tipping the tank upside down into a large drum or pail.
  • Media Bed Loading Procedure:
    1. Place the distributor tube back down the center of the tank.
    2. Plug the top of the distributor tube with a rag, cork, or tape to prevent media from entering.
    3. Pour the bag of media into the tank. It is important that the distributor tube is not moved or pulled during this process. Using a funnel may make filling easier and neater.
  • Parts for Media Replacement: Only PeakFlow A System media can be used. Using any other replacement media will void warranties and may compromise equipment protection, water quality, and equipment life.
  • Warranty: Navien, Inc. warrants the system to be free of defects in material and workmanship for one year from the date of installation, provided it is correctly installed according to the manual. The warranty is contingent on the incoming water complying with EPA regulations for various contaminants and chlorine levels not exceeding 2.0 ppm. Abuse, improper installation, or damage caused by user error will void the warranty. The equipment must comply with local piping regulations and EPA drinking water standards. The warranty is limited to the specified water pressure and temperature ranges. All claims require the model number, serial number, and installation date.
