Function Description
The Neff extractor hood is designed for domestic use to remove cooking fumes, odours, and vapours from the kitchen. It can operate in two primary modes: exhaust air mode and air recirculation mode.
In exhaust air mode, the air drawn into the appliance is cleaned by grease filters and then conveyed to the exterior of the building through a pipe system. This mode requires proper ventilation to prevent a partial vacuum in the room, especially if other room air-dependent heat-producing appliances (like gas, oil, wood, or coal-operated heaters) are in use. Adequate fresh air supply is crucial to avoid drawing toxic gases back into the living space. The manual advises consulting a Master Chimney Sweep to assess the house's ventilation setup for safe operation in this mode.
In air recirculation mode, the air is cleaned by both grease filters and an activated carbon filter before being conveyed back into the kitchen. This mode is suitable when external venting is not possible or desired, and it allows for unrestricted operation even with room air-dependent heat-producing appliances. An activated carbon filter is essential for odour binding in this mode and needs regular replacement.
The appliance features a control panel with buttons for various functions, including:
- Switching the fan on/off.
- Adjusting the fan speed (up and down).
- Activating an intensive setting for strong odours/fumes.
- Setting a fan run-on time.
- Enabling interval ventilation.
- Extending and retracting the appliance.
- Switching the lighting on/off and adjusting brightness.
The extractor hood only functions when fully extended. It automatically retracts and switches off the light and fan when the retraction button is pressed.
Usage Features
The extractor hood is designed for user convenience and safety.
Operation:
- Extending/Retracting: The appliance can be extended or retracted by pressing a dedicated button. When extending, the fan automatically starts at setting 2. When retracting, the fan and light automatically switch off. Users are warned to remove any objects from the movement area and keep children away to prevent injury.
- Fan Settings: The fan speed can be adjusted using "+" and "-" buttons to match the intensity of cooking fumes. There are multiple fan settings, including an intensive setting for heavy build-up of odours and vapours.
- Intensive Setting: Two intensive settings (P1 for 5 minutes, P2 for 7 minutes) are available. After the preset time, the fan automatically reverts to setting 2. This setting can be manually ended.
- Fan Run-on Time: A "run-on" function allows the fan to continue operating for 15 minutes after cooking to clear residual fumes, then switches off automatically. The lighting also switches off if it was on during this period.
- Interval Ventilation: This feature automatically switches on the ventilation system for 10 minutes every hour, for a total of 24 hours, to maintain air quality.
- Lighting: The integrated LED lighting can be switched on and off independently of the fan. Its brightness can also be adjusted by pressing and holding the light button.
Safety Precautions:
- Users are advised to wear protective gloves when handling internal components due to sharp edges.
- No objects should be placed on the appliance to prevent them from falling.
- Directly looking into the switched-on LED lights for extended periods is discouraged due to their dazzling nature.
- Cookware should not be placed within the movement area of the appliance to avoid tipping and spillage of hot liquids.
- The appliance should be switched on at the start of cooking and off several minutes after finishing to effectively remove kitchen fumes.
- Hot oil and fat should never be left unattended, and water should not be used to extinguish burning oil or fat.
- Gas burners should only be operated with cookware on them to prevent heat damage to the hood.
Environmental Protection:
- The manual encourages energy-efficient use by adjusting fan speed to cooking intensity, using intensive mode only when necessary, and switching off the hood and lighting when not required.
- It also provides guidelines for environmentally-friendly disposal of packaging and the appliance itself, adhering to European Directive 2012/19/EU (WEEE).
Maintenance Features
Regular cleaning and maintenance are crucial for the appliance's efficiency, safety, and longevity.
Cleaning Agents:
- The manual provides a table detailing appropriate cleaning agents for different surfaces:
- Stainless steel: Hot soapy water with a dishcloth, or special stainless steel cleaning products. Clean in the direction of the grain.
- Painted surfaces: Hot soapy water with a damp dishcloth.
- Aluminium and plastic: Glass cleaner with a soft cloth.
- Glass: Glass cleaner with a soft cloth (no glass scraper).
- Operating controls: Hot soapy water with a damp dishcloth (never wet cloth to prevent moisture ingress into electronics).
- Users are warned against using harsh, abrasive, acidic, or alkaline cleaning agents, high-pressure cleaners, steam cleaners, or hard scouring pads/sponges.
- Cleaning Frequency: The metal grease filters must be cleaned at least every two months, or every 100 operating hours, to prevent grease deposits from catching fire. The appliance should never be operated without the grease filter.
- Cleaning Method: Filters can be cleaned by hand (soaking in hot soapy water, scrubbing with a brush, rinsing, and draining) or in a dishwasher (placed loosely, not wedged, and not with heavily soiled utensils).
- Removal/Installation: Instructions are provided for opening the filter cover, unlocking and removing the grease filter, cleaning it, and then reinstalling it. Users are advised to hold the filter holder at an angle to prevent dripping grease.
Activated Charcoal Filter (for air recirculation mode only):
- Replacement Frequency: The activated charcoal filter must be replaced every 200 operating hours to ensure efficient odour filtration.
- Replacement Procedure: Instructions detail how to remove the metal clip, disconnect the old charcoal filter from the metal grease filter, and secure a new one.
General Maintenance:
- The appliance should be allowed to cool down before cleaning to prevent burns.
- Before cleaning, the appliance must be unplugged or its circuit breaker switched off to prevent electric shock.
- The inside of the appliance should be cleaned after removing the filters.
- The filter cover must be completely closed for the appliance to retract properly.
- Defective LED lights must only be replaced by the manufacturer, customer service, or a licensed electrician.
Troubleshooting:
- A malfunction table helps users identify common problems (e.g., appliance not working, fan not switching on, lighting not working) and their possible causes and solutions.
