Overview

This document is an owner's manual for the NewGen 345-S electric bicycle, providing comprehensive information on its assembly, operation, maintenance, and safety. The manual emphasizes the importance of understanding the bike's features and adhering to safety guidelines for a secure and enjoyable riding experience.

Function Description:

The NewGen 345-S is an electric bicycle designed for off-road or private land use in the UK and EU. It features a 250W rear hub motor, an 8-speed derailleur, and 180mm hydraulic disc brakes. The bike is equipped with a high-capacity Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery, which powers the motor and lights. It includes a front 18W utility light and a rear LED running light for visibility. The pedal assist system (PAS) offers five levels of assistance, allowing riders to choose the desired power output. A walk assist mode is also available, engaging the motor to help move the bike at a walking pace. The bike's display provides essential information such as battery level, speed, riding time, and mileage.

Usage Features:

Before the first ride, users are advised to fully charge the battery, which takes approximately 5 hours. The charger automatically stops charging when the battery is full, indicated by a light changing from red to green. The battery is inserted into a rack under the seat and locked in place with a key. It can be charged both on and off the bike.

To operate the bike, the power button on the underside of the display is held for 3 seconds to turn it on. The pedal assist level can be selected using the '+' and '-' buttons on the display, with level 1 being the lowest and 5 the highest. It is recommended to start at the lowest assist level to ensure full control. The display also allows users to cycle through various information displays, including trip miles, riding time, average speed, maximum speed, and total mileage, by pressing the 'M' button. The front and rear lights can be turned on or off by holding the '+' button for 3 seconds. The walk assist mode is activated by holding the '-' button for 2 seconds.

The manual stresses the importance of understanding the pedal assistance sensors and thumb throttle (if applicable) and using them with care, especially when traveling at speeds appropriate for the usage area, riding conditions, and user experience level. Riders should always use the lowest assist level until they are comfortable with the bike's power.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the safety, efficiency, and longevity of the NewGen 345-S. Before any maintenance, the bike should be turned off, securely positioned, and the battery removed to prevent damage or injury.

Pre-Ride Safety Checklist:

Before each ride, riders should:

  • Wear an approved cycling helmet.
  • Familiarize themselves with the bike's operation and pedal assist system in a safe environment.
  • Ensure the battery is securely locked in place.
  • Check the brakes by pulling both levers; they should feel firm and not touch the handlebar.
  • Regularly check brakes and tire pressure.
  • Verify that all wheel nuts and brake screws are properly tightened.
  • Exercise extra caution in wet conditions, decreasing speed and increasing braking distances.

Brakes:

The 345-S is fitted with Magura MT4 eSTOP hydraulic disc brakes, optimized for e-bikes. Hydraulic brakes require specialist equipment for adjustments and maintenance, which is best performed by a professional bike shop. Brake pads will wear down over time and need replacement. New disc brakes may squeak during the first few rides as they settle in.

Gears:

Poor gear changes can indicate chain misalignment. To check alignment, the bike should be in the highest gear, and the rear derailleur cogs should align with the smallest sprocket on the cassette. Adjustments can be made by rotating the adjuster clockwise or anticlockwise. If issues persist, a bike shop service is recommended.

Tires & Wheels:

Tires should always be inflated to the correct pressure, typically between 20 PSI and a maximum of 35 PSI for 20x4 tires. Incorrect pressure can reduce performance, increase wear, and compromise safety. Tires should be checked for damage and replaced if significant wear or damage is present. If wheels are not spinning straight or spokes loosen, professional wheel tuning is advised. Replacement tires and inner tubes are available from the NewGen Bikes online accessories store.

Motor:

The hub motor should spin smoothly, and its bearings should be in good working order. All power cables running to the hub motor must be secured and undamaged. The hub motor axle bolts, torque arms, and torque washers should be securely in place.

Cleaning:

Before cleaning, the battery must be removed. The frame can be cleaned with soap and water using a soft cloth to avoid scratching the paint. Electronic components should not be sprayed directly with liquids. The battery should be kept dry and wiped down with a dry cloth. The bike, hub motor, or battery should never be submerged in water.

Repairs & Maintenance Schedule:

The manual provides a detailed maintenance schedule based on mileage:

  • 0-200 Miles: Check hardware torque, drivetrain alignment and function, wheel trueness, tire/rim damage, and frame damage. Service includes cleaning the frame with a damp cloth and an initial break-in service by a bike store.
  • 250-750 Miles: Check brake pad alignment and pressure point, hardware torque, gear shifting, chain stretch, and shifter cables for corrosion/fraying. Service includes cleaning and lubricating the drivetrain, checking crank set and pedal torque, and cleaning brakes and shift cables.
  • 750-1250 Miles: Check drivetrain, hardware torque, brake pad alignment and pressure point, and shifter cables for corrosion/fraying. A service at a reputable bike store is recommended.

The manual emphasizes that many components are highly stressed and can fatigue over time, leading to failure and potential injury. Regular checks and services are vital, and genuine replacement parts should be used for safety-critical components.
