If you would like to add a signature to each email you write, tap Signature. The
screen appears with a keyboard. Enter your signature and tap OK. Now, whenever
you compose a new email or reply to an email, the signature is entered automatically,
and your cursor is placed above it.
Quick Responses are items that you frequently type in emails: things like, Hello! I
hope all is well with you. You can add quick responses by tapping the option and
tapping Create New. Enter the message and tap Save. To delete a quick response, tap
the trash can icon next to it.
If you have multiple email accounts, you can set one up as the default account. What
this means is that when you respond or forward an email, the email address shown for
you is the default.
Inbox Check Frequency determines how often you want your NOOK to check for
new email messages. Tap it to see your options, which vary from every 5, 10, 15, 30,
and 60 minutes to never. If you select Never, when you launch your email, you need
to click the Check for New Messages button (see Chapter 9). The more often you
check, the more power (albeit not that much) your NOOK uses. If you are an email
junkie, you may opt for the lower settings, but if you don’t get a lot of emails or you
don’t like distracting notifications, you may opt for the higher values.
The Download Attachments setting determines whether you want to automatically
download the latest cat photo making the Internet rounds your cousin sent or whether
you want to make that decision.
When a new email arrives, a notification appears on the status bar at the top of the
screen. If you don’t want to be informed when new email arrives (regardless of how
often the NOOK checks for new email messages), clear the check mark for this
option.
When those notifications arrive, they come with a notification sound. You can control
that sound by tapping Choose Ringtone. You have a variety of options here. Tap the
ringtone to hear what they sound like, and then tap OK after you have selected the
one you want.
TIP: You’re an email junkie checking email every 5 minutes, and you get lots
of emails, so you like to get the notification in the status bar but you don’t want
any ringtone? Choose Silent in the list of ringtones.
The Incoming and Outgoing Settings are advanced options covered in Chapter 9.
