The NOVELAN HELOX 5 and HELOX 8 are air/water heat pumps designed for outdoor installation, offering heating, domestic hot water preparation (optional with accessories), and reversible cooling functions. These devices are suitable for household use and are controlled via a dedicated heating and heat pump controller.
Function Description:
The heat pump operates on a thermodynamic cycle. Liquid refrigerant is evaporated in the evaporator, absorbing ambient heat from the outside air. The gaseous refrigerant is then compressed by the compressor, which increases its pressure and temperature. This high-temperature gaseous refrigerant is then liquefied in the condenser, transferring its heat to the heating water for use in the heating circuit or domestic hot water preparation. Finally, the liquid refrigerant is expanded through an expansion valve, causing its pressure and temperature to drop, and the cycle restarts.
The system's temperatures and operational modes are managed by the heat pump controller. For additional heating or to support screed drying or increase domestic hot water temperature, an electric heating element can be activated by the controller as needed.
The cooling function is integrated into the HELOX 5 and HELOX 8 units, allowing for active cooling down to a minimum flow temperature of 18°C. The heating and heat pump controller manages the cooling function and facilitates switching between heating and cooling modes.
Vibration decoupling accessories for the hydraulic system are crucial to prevent structure-borne sound and vibrations from transferring to the fixed pipes and the building.

Both models require a minimum buffer tank volume in series for parallel mode (e.g., 86 L for 2x Helox 5, 138 L for 2x Helox 8, up to 186 L for 4x Helox 8).
Usage Features:
- Outdoor Installation: The units are designed exclusively for outdoor installation.
- Control: Operated via the control panel of the heating and heat pump controller.
- Accessories: Only genuine accessories from the manufacturer should be used, including hydraulic stations (HSV 180/280), hydraulic modules (HV6H/HV9H), or wall-mounted controllers (WR). Additional accessories like electrical connection kits, wall ducts, floor brackets, vibration decouplings, buffer tanks, and room control units are available.
- Condensate Drain: Requires a plastic condensate pipe with a minimum diameter of 40 mm for frost-free drainage. For outdoor installation, the pipe can be routed vertically into the ground to a depth of at least 90 cm if the surface is water permeable. For indoor connections, a waste trap with an airtight connection to the drain pipe is necessary.
- Heating Water Quality: The system should be filled with deionised heating water (VE water) or water conforming to VDI 2035 norm to prevent scale and corrosion. The pH value of the heating water should be between 8.2 and 10 (8.2-9 for aluminum materials), and electrical conductivity should be < 100 µS/cm. A system log for hot water heating systems is recommended.
- Parallel Mode: Up to four Helox heat pumps of the same kW capacity class can be connected for a common heating system. Each unit must be connected to a hydraulic module or wall-mounted controller. A stratified buffer tank is required for parallel mode.
- Coastal Installation: Units should be installed facing away from the coast/prevailing wind direction in a sheltered area near a wall, not in open or sandy areas. If installed on the seaward side, an impermeable windbreak resistant to onshore winds, with height and width ≥ 150% of the device dimensions, is required.
Maintenance Features:
- Regular Checks: The cooling circuit does not require regular maintenance. However, local regulations may require leak checks and a logbook for certain heat pumps.
- Post-Commissioning Maintenance: All installed dirt traps should be checked and cleaned one week after commissioning, and again two weeks later. The system must be switched off during these checks.
- As-Needed Maintenance:
- Check and clean heating circuit components (valves, expansion vessels, pumps, filters, dirt traps).
- Regularly control for unimpeded air in-feed, removing any blockages from insulation, packaging, foliage, snow, ice, or vegetation.
- Check the condensate pan and evaporator for dirt/clogging and clean as necessary. Icing on air in-feed and out-feed openings is normal and weather-related; remove it carefully with protective gloves.
- Clean and flush the condenser according to manufacturer instructions, neutralizing any chemical residues after flushing with cleaning agents.
- Annual Maintenance:
- Determine heating water quality by analysis and take corrective measures if needed.
- Check and clean all installed dirt traps.
- Test the function of the safety valve for the heating circuit.
- Malfunctions: In case of malfunction, read the cause via the diagnostic program of the heating and heat pump controller. Consult the manufacturer's local partner or customer service with the fault message and device number.
- Disposal: The unit contains flammable (primary) refrigerant. Disposal must be carried out by qualified personnel according to local regulations for flammable refrigerants, keeping away from ignition sources. Environmentally hazardous substances (refrigerant, compressor oil) must be collected safely and disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner. Components and packaging materials must be recycled or disposed of according to local regulations.
