CLEAR POND FILTER
Instructions
Filtration
Whether you are a beginner or experienced water gardener, you will probably have one objective and
that is to achieve a clean, clear healthy pond. Ponds can be affected by various factors such as
unconsumed fish food, decomposing vegetation and fish excrement. If these pollutants are allowed to
accumulate, in time they will become harmful to your fish. The use of a biological filter will remove
these toxins (nitrite, ammonia) and provide good quality water with the additional benefit of reducing
algae growth.

?
Your filter may take 3 - 6 weeks to fully mature with beneficial
bacteria, however you can prematurely speed this process
up by using Oasis Filter Active (Ask your retailer)
Stage 1 Ultra Violet Clarifier (U.V.C) This is situated within the lid of the filter. As water is pumped
through the unit, the algae cells are penetrated by the U.V.C light destroying their ability to multiply and
causing them to flocculate (bond together). This process creates larger particles which can then be
removed more effectively by the Biological filter. The U.V.C will clear the water within 2 - 4 weeks and
additionally the mild sterilizing effect will help to reduce harmful bacteria levels.
Stage 2 Mechanical Heavy sediments (Leafs, Blanket Weed & Fish Waste) are filtered from the
st
water, as the water passes through the brushes. (1 Chamber)
Stage 3 Mechanical/Biological In the second chamber the water passes through the Bio Cartridge.
This media filters the smaller debris which is not collected by the brushes. The cartridge also allows
beneficial bacteria to grow on its surface.
Stage 4 Mechanical/Biological In the middle chamber, there are 3 layers of reticulated foam.
Suspended particles are filtered out as the water passes through.
Green Foam: Course Grade
White Foam: Medium Grade
Blue Foam: Fine Grade
Biological - Below the layers of foam, there is Biological Media called Flocor™. The purpose of this
media is to allow beneficial bacteria to grow on it's surface. Once matured the bacteria will breakdown
the harmful pond pollutants (Ammonia & Nitrite) converting them into Nitrate... Which is naturally
absorbed by pond plants.
Filter Installation
1). Ensure that all fittings are watertight. Use only the correct size outlet
pipe for the filter outlet/s. (Please ask your stockist for details)

Overview

The Oasis Clear Pond Filter is a comprehensive filtration system designed to maintain a clean, clear, and healthy pond environment. It addresses various pollutants such as unconsumed fish food, decomposing vegetation, and fish excrement, which, if allowed to accumulate, can become harmful to fish. The system utilizes a multi-stage filtration process, including ultraviolet clarification, mechanical filtration, and biological filtration, to remove toxins, reduce algae growth, and provide good quality water.

Function Description:

The filtration process begins with Stage 1, the Ultra Violet Clarifier (U.V.C), located within the lid of the filter. As water is pumped through this unit, algae cells are penetrated by U.V.C light, which destroys their ability to multiply and causes them to flocculate (bond together). This process creates larger particles that can then be more effectively removed by the subsequent biological filter. The U.V.C is designed to clear the water within 2-4 weeks and also provides a mild sterilizing effect to help reduce harmful bacteria levels.

Following the U.V.C, water enters Stage 2, the Mechanical filtration stage. Here, heavy sediments such as leaves, blanket weed, and fish waste are filtered from the water as it passes through a series of brushes located in the first chamber. This initial mechanical filtration helps to remove larger debris, preventing clogging in later stages and ensuring the longevity of the finer filtration media.

Stage 3 involves further Mechanical/Biological filtration. In the second chamber, the water passes through a Bio Cartridge. This media is designed to filter smaller debris that was not collected by the brushes in Stage 2. Crucially, the Bio Cartridge's surface also provides an ideal environment for beneficial bacteria to grow, contributing to the biological filtration process.

The final stage, Stage 4, combines Mechanical/Biological filtration in the middle chamber. This stage features three layers of reticulated foam, each with a different grade: Green Foam (Course Grade), White Foam (Medium Grade), and Blue Foam (Fine Grade). These layers effectively filter out suspended particles as water passes through them. Below these foam layers, the system incorporates Biological Media called Flocor™. The primary purpose of this media is to provide a large surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow and mature. Once matured, these bacteria break down harmful pond pollutants like ammonia and nitrite, converting them into nitrate, which is then naturally absorbed by pond plants. This comprehensive multi-stage approach ensures thorough cleaning and detoxification of pond water.

Usage Features:

The filter is designed for permanent installation and is not submersible. It must be positioned where it cannot be accidentally knocked into the pond or waterfall. For optimal performance, all fittings must be watertight, and the correct size outlet pipe should be used. The filter should be sited on a firm, level base, with its outlet positioned higher than the water surface of the pond or above the height of a waterfall, if one is present. It is recommended to keep the filter as close to the pond as possible. A suitable size and length of hose should be attached from the pond pump to the filter's inlet and secured with a hose clip.

For continuous biological filtration, the unit must be run 24 hours a day to maintain the bacteria colony. It is important to note that the biological media will take approximately 3-6 weeks to fully mature. This maturation process can be accelerated by using Oasis Filter Active, if desired.

The unit is manufactured in the EEC and conforms to CE Regulations, ensuring a standard of quality and safety.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the optimal performance and longevity of the Clear Pond Filter. The system is equipped with an overflow system; if water is seen entering the overflow, it indicates that the media requires cleaning.

For cleaning, the brushes in the first chamber should be kept reasonably clear from heavy debris. These should be removed and washed in a container of pond water. Similarly, if the Bio cartridge appears clogged, it should be removed and rinsed in a container of pond water. It is important not to clean the media too thoroughly, only enough to remove large solids, and never allow the media to dry out, as this can harm the beneficial bacteria.

The foam layers should be removed individually and cleaned in a container of pond water. Tap water should be avoided for cleaning the foams, as they contain beneficial bacteria that can be damaged by chlorinated water. The foams should be re-fitted in the correct order (dimpled side uppermost) before they dry: Green Foam (Top Layer), White Foam (Middle Layer), and Blue Foam (Bottom Layer).

The Flocor™ media typically does not require cleaning. However, if accumulated silt needs to be removed from the tank, the Flocor™ media can be removed and placed into a container of pond water while the tank is cleaned, which helps preserve the beneficial bacteria.

The filter includes a quick de-sludge feature. Stage 1 involves simply opening the drain valve until the water runs clear. Stage 2 allows for connecting a garden hose to the hose connector, opening the drain valve, and turning on the water. This process does not require removing the media, as water passes underneath it, thereby preserving the beneficial bacteria.

For U.V.C maintenance, the quartz sleeve may become fouled with algae and limescale deposits over time. These should be removed using a suitable cleaning agent, taking care not to scratch the quartz surface. The UV lamp must be replaced every 12 months or after 8000 hours of use, even if it still emits a blue light, as its UV-destroying capabilities diminish. An Oasis UV Maintenance Kit, which includes a replacement lamp, 'O' rings, quartz sleeve, and cleaning cloths, is available.

When performing any installation or maintenance, especially involving electrical components, the mains electricity supply MUST be disconnected. The power supply should be earthed and fused at 3 amps. A Residual Current Device (RCD) MUST be fitted to the mains supply. Never look directly at the U.V bulb when it is switched on, as the UV light can cause damage to eyes and skin. The unit is supplied with a translucent hosetail that glows when the U.V is working, providing a visual indicator. When re-assembling the unit, all fittings must be watertight, with particular attention to the end caps, which should be hand-tightened but not overtightened.
