Overview

The device is an Olympus Stylus 100 Wide (M[mju:]-III Wide 100), a fully automatic 35mm autofocus lens-shutter camera with a built-in 28-100mm zoom lens. It is designed for ease of use with various automatic features for flash and exposure control, and is an all-weather design.

Function Description:

The camera's primary function is to capture photographs using 35mm standard DX-coded film (24 x 36 mm). It features a versatile 28-100mm zoom lens, allowing for both wide-angle and telephoto shots. The autofocus system is a passive-type multi-autofocus system with a maximum of 11 points, ensuring accurate focus across various subjects. Focus lock is possible, providing greater control over composition. The camera offers a range of focusing distances: 0.8 m (2.4 ft) to infinity at telephoto, and 0.6 m (2.0 ft) to infinity at wide angle.

Exposure control is handled by a programmed automatic exposure system with 3-zone light metering. The auto exposure range is EV2.4 (F4.6, 4-sec) to EV16 (F10.2, 1/630-sec) at wide angle, and EV5.1 (F11.9, 4-sec) to EV17 (F18, 1/410-sec) at telephoto. This broad range allows the camera to adapt to various lighting conditions.

The camera includes a built-in pop-up flash with a recycling time of approximately 0.5 to 5.5 seconds (at normal temperature, with a new battery). It offers six flash modes: Auto Flash, Red-Eye Reduction Flash, Flash-Off, Fill-In Flash, Night Scene Flash, and Red-Eye Reduction Night Scene Flash. These modes provide flexibility for different photographic scenarios, from automatic activation in low light to specialized modes for night scenes and red-eye prevention.

Additionally, the camera features a self-timer with an approximate 12-second delay and supports an optional infrared remote control unit (RC-300C) with an approximate 3-second delay. For Quartzdate models, a date unit allows for printing the date and time on photos, with various display formats (year-month-day, month-day-year, day-month-year, day-hour-minute) and an automatic calendar function up to the year 2035.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Film Format: 35mm standard DX-coded film (24 x 36 mm).
  • Lens: Olympus lens, 28-100mm, F4.6-11.9, 7 elements in 7 groups.
  • Shutter: Programmed electronic shutter.
  • Viewfinder: Real image zoom view viewfinder with autofocus marks, close-up correction marks, green lamp (autofocus indicator), orange lamp (flash indicator), and diopter adjustment.
  • Focusing System: Passive-type multi-autofocus system (max. 11 points), focus lock possible.
  • Focusing Range: 0.8m (2.4 ft) ~ ∞ (infinity) at telephoto; 0.6m (2.0 ft) ~ ∞ (infinity) at wide angle.
  • Exposure Control: Programmed automatic exposure control, 3-zone light metering.
  • Auto Exposure Range: EV2.4 (F4.6, 4-sec) ~ EV16 (F10.2, 1/630-sec) at wide angle; EV5.1 (F11.9, 4-sec) ~ EV17 (F18, 1/410-sec) at telephoto.
  • Film Speed Range: Automatic setting with DX-coded film (ISO50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, or 3200). Non-DX-coded film is set at ISO100.
  • Flash: Built-in pop-up flash. Recycling time: Approx. 0.5-5.5 sec.
  • Flash Working Range (ISO100): 0.6-4.6m (2.0-15.1 ft) at wide angle; 0.8-1.8m (2.6-5.9 ft) at telephoto.
  • Flash Working Range (ISO400): 0.6-9.2m (2.0-30.2 ft) at wide angle; 0.8-3.6m (2.6-11.8 ft) at telephoto.
  • Power Source: One 3V lithium battery (DL123A or CR123A). A new battery lasts for about 15 rolls of film.
  • Dimensions: 117 (W) x 61.5 (H) x 42.5 (D) mm (4.6 x 2.4 x 1.7 in).
  • Weight: 220g (7.8 oz) (without battery).
  • Other: All-weather design.

Usage Features:

  • Loading Film: The camera features automatic film loading and winding. The film leader is aligned with a guide line, and the film automatically advances to the first frame upon closing the back cover. Mid-roll rewind is possible using a dedicated button. ISO400 film is recommended, but non-DX-coded film will be set to ISO100.
  • Taking Pictures: The lens barrier must be opened to activate the camera. The zoom lever allows adjustment between wide-angle (28mm) and telephoto (100mm) focal lengths. A wide multi-autofocus system makes it easier to lock focus on subjects not in the center of the frame. The green lamp indicates focus, and the orange lamp indicates flash status.
  • Flash Modes: Six flash modes are available, selected via the flash mode button. These include Auto Flash, Red-Eye Reduction, Flash-Off (for situations where flash is prohibited or undesired, with slow shutter speeds up to 2 seconds), Fill-In Flash (for backlit conditions or shadows), Night Scene Flash (for clear foreground subjects with night backgrounds, with slow shutter speeds up to 4 seconds), and Red-Eye Reduction Night Scene Flash. Tripods are recommended for slow shutter speed modes.
  • Exposure Modes: Three exposure modes are available: Auto Exposure (for ordinary situations), Spot Metering (for precise focus and exposure on a specific area), and Infinity (for shooting scenery through a window, with the working distance automatically set to infinity).
  • Self-Timer/Remote Control: A self-timer provides a 12-second delay. An optional infrared remote control (RC-300C) offers a 3-second delay. The remote control battery (CR2025) is replaceable.
  • Date/Time Printing (Quartzdate models): Allows printing of date and time on photos in various formats. The date unit uses the same power source as the main unit and requires correction after battery replacement.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Check: The LCD panel displays battery status, indicating if the battery is OK, low, or dead.
  • Cleaning: The lens barrier should be kept clean to prevent unclear or out-of-focus pictures. A soft cloth is recommended for cleaning.
  • Storage: Avoid exposing the camera to excessive heat, humidity, direct sunlight, formalin, naphthalene, dust, or sand. Do not leave the camera unused for long periods to prevent mold growth or other issues.
  • Water Exposure: If the camera gets wet, wipe it with a dry towel, especially if exposed to saltwater.
  • X-ray Machines: Airport X-ray machines can damage film; manual inspection by security officers is recommended.
  • Flash Surface: Avoid touching the front surface of the flash after continuous use, as it may be hot.
