OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
In actual obse rvati on, two methods are emp l oyed using refle cted light or tran:;.
Illum ina ti on. The appropriate stage plate must be selected in each casei. e. smoked
glass for n atura l reflt~\:ted lig ht and clear gl ass for tran s-illuminatiOn. For na tur al
reflected light it is not ah,ays necesRry to u se the subs tage base. Fo llowing is the
sequence of micro scope adjustments f or c•b!'e rv a tion .
I. Pl ace spec imen on the stage plate and
bold it "ith c lips if n ecessa ry.
2. Lo ose n the pillar clamp sc rew .
3. Set the rragnification. select or dial
temp ora rily at 16.

Lo ok ing through eyepieces, move the
body ve rtica lly or swi ng h orizonta lly
to
fo tu s roughly a nd determine the
point of olservation on the specimen .
5. Firmly : ighten the pillar clamp sc rew.
6. Looking through the ri ght eyepiece
rotate the f ocus ing knob to ob ta in
precise foc us.
7. Turn the
pris m
box to
adjus t the
interpupillary di sta nce.
8. Adjust eye- refr ac tion difierence by
rotating the left eyepiece until the
in ~ age is s ha rp.
9. Rot ate the
magnif.cacion-selector dial
to the indication number desired.
Hy following the above meth od, a co rre ct
image of the s pecimen will be obtained.
To furth er improve the image. various
illuminating met h od may be used.

I. In order to attain a crisp and stereo -
scopic image of opaque specimens
particula rly, co ncentrated light at an
angle of 30 60° to the objective axis
is appr o priate . T he Olympus Epi-
l ll uminator ( LSG ) is idea l for this
purpose . The LSG utilizes a 6V 1.7A
ill umination l amp and a 6V fiA trans
form er.
2. By soft lighting ( n atura l l ight from
north, an externa l frosted electri c bu lb
etc. ) an im age of low contrast is
attainab le.

When observing an article in white or
of bright co lors, use t he cl ear stage
plate with a bl ack disc underneath, so
th at the background field will be
darkened , inc reasing im~ge co n tra s t.
The epi-illum inator ( LSG) is conveniently
mounted on the front of the body by two
cl amp screws.
I. Adjust the angle of the refle ct ing
mir r or so that both ocul ar fiel ds will
be equa lly bright.
2. T o obtain an image of the inte r ior of
a
specimen, use t he Sil vered side of the
mirro r. If only I he ex t erna l surface
of the specimen is required, use t he
white side of the mirror .

When observing the rim of a specimen
or a ci lium, it is desirable to emp l oy
l ighting sl ight ly of f the optica l axis
by closing dow n tihe irs - obli que
i llu mina tion (optional accessory ).
