Overview

Device Description: Caravan/Pacifica Door Lock Alarm Interface (Firmware: CHDL6+)

This document describes the installation and functionality of the Caravan/Pacifica Door Lock Alarm Interface, a module designed to integrate with vehicle systems to provide enhanced door lock and alarm control. The device operates with firmware CHDL6+ and is specifically tailored for Caravan and Pacifica models, offering a "no key required" solution for various functions.

Function Description

The primary function of this module is to act as an interface between the vehicle's data bus and an aftermarket remote control system (RCS) or alarm. It translates signals from the vehicle's low voltage signal wire to control various locking and alarm features. The module supports:

  • Data Bus Interface: This is the core communication method, allowing the module to interact directly with the vehicle's onboard systems.
  • Lock/Unlock: Provides control over the vehicle's central locking system, enabling locking and unlocking of all doors.
  • Trunk/Rear Hatch Control: Facilitates the release or opening of the trunk or rear hatch. This can be a 3-second pulse for release or a 1-second simultaneous pulse with sliding door control.
  • Sliding Door Control (RT. & LEFT): Offers independent control over both the right and left power sliding doors, providing a 1-second pulse for open/close operations.
  • OEM Security Integration: Arms and disarms the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) security system.
  • Arm/Disarm: Directly controls the arming and disarming of the vehicle's alarm system.
  • Starter Enable: Provides a mechanism to enable the vehicle's starter, likely for remote start applications.
  • Door Pin Status Output for Aftermarket Alarm (-): Outputs a negative signal indicating the status of the vehicle's doors (open/closed), which can be used as an input for an aftermarket alarm system. This feature detects door status via the data bus and converts it to an analog output.
  • Door Sense Trigger: An output that likely provides a signal when a door is opened or closed, useful for alarm triggers.

The module can operate in two primary connection modes:

  • D2D (Data to Data): Utilizes an optional 4-pin data cable for a digital connection, replacing analogue wire-to-wire (w2w) connections. This is the preferred method for streamlined integration.
  • W2W (Wire to Wire): Employs analogue wire connections for direct wiring to specific vehicle circuits.

Important Technical Specifications

The module features a 10-pin harness for connections, with each pin assigned a specific function and color code:

  • Pin 1 (Brown): Input, connects to the Ground When Running Output of a remote starter.
  • Pin 2 (Green): Input, connects to the (-) Lock Output wire of the RCS, controlling factory alarm arm/disarm and locking all doors.
  • Pin 3 (Blue): Input, connects to the (-) Unlock Output wire of the RCS, unlocking all doors.
  • Pin 4 (Violet/White): Output, connects to Connector C3 on the BCM (Body Control Module) near the firewall. This wire activates door locks and the alarm. The specific wire color on the BCM varies based on whether the vehicle has a factory alarm (Purple/Lt Blue, PIN14) or not (Purple/Drk Green, PIN21). This connection is relevant for 2001-2003 Minivans.
  • Pin 5 (Violet): Data wire, connects to PIN 2 of the On Board Diagnostic Connector (OBDII) under the dash on the driver's side. This allows data commands from the module to the vehicle.
  • Pin 6 (Pink/White): Output, connects to the (-) door trigger input wire of the RCS. It detects door status (open/closed) via the data bus and converts it to an analog output.
  • Pin 7 (Pink): Input, connects to the AUX Output for the Left Sliding Door, providing a 1-second (-) pulse for open/close.
  • Pin 8 (Orange): Input, connects to the AUX Output for the Right Sliding Door, providing a 1-second (-) pulse for open/close. It also connects to the Trunk or AUX Output, providing a 3-second (-) pulse for trunk/rear hatch release or a 1-second simultaneous pulse with orange & pink releases.
  • Pin 9 (Red): Input, connects to a constant (+) 12 Volt Source, providing power to the module.
  • Pin 10 (Black): Input, connects to Chassis Ground.

The module operates with a (+)12 Volt Constant power input and a Chassis Ground connection. It includes an LED indicator for programming feedback and status, and a programming button for configuration. A diode is shown in the wiring diagram for the AUX outputs (Pink and Orange), likely for protection or signal isolation.

Usage Features

The module is designed for ease of installation and programming, but emphasizes the use of a high-quality digital multi-meter for testing to prevent damage to the vehicle's low voltage signal wires. Test lights or logic probes are explicitly forbidden for testing.

Vehicle Type Programming (Section C): This is a critical initial setup step to ensure compatibility with the specific vehicle model.

  1. Connect Module: Upon connection, the LED illuminates solid.
  2. Ignition ON: Turning the ignition key to the ON position causes the LED to turn off, then begin a flash pattern indicating the currently selected vehicle type (default is Type 1). If the module has never been programmed or has been reset, the LED flashes will directly indicate the current type.
  3. Change Vehicle Type: Press and release the program button to cycle through vehicle types. The LED flash pattern will correspond to the selected type (e.g., 1 flash = Type 1, 2 flashes = Type 2).
  4. Save Selection: Press and hold the program button until the LED flashes rapidly. This saves the selection, and the module exits programming. If the LED remains solid, the module is ready for operation. If already programmed, the number of flashes upon power-up indicates the programmed type once.

Vehicle Type Chart (Section D): The manual provides a chart detailing the compatible vehicle types and their corresponding "Type" numbers for programming:

  • Grand Caravan, Caravan, Town & Country: Type 2 for 2004-2006 models, Type 1 for 2001-2003 models.
  • Pacifica: Type 2 for 2004-2006 models. N/A for 2001-2003.
  • Liberty: Type 2 for 2005-2006 models. N/A for 2001-2004.
  • Voyager: N/A for 2004-2006 models, Type 1 for 2001-2003 models.

User Settings - Optional Programming (Section E): This section allows for advanced configuration, specifically for MODES 7 and 8. User modes are identified by a slow LED flash pattern (1 slow flash = Mode 1, 2 slow flashes = Mode 2, etc.).

  1. Enter Programming: With the ignition OFF, press and hold the program button for 2 seconds. The LED will flash rapidly for 2 seconds, then release. The LED will then identify the MODE selection with a slow flash pattern (1-8 flashes) and the OPTION selection with a fast flash pattern (1 or 2 flashes).
  2. Change MODE: Push the button once to cycle through modes. The LED confirms the mode with a slow flash pattern.
  3. Change OPTION: Press the LOCK or UNLOCK button on the aftermarket remote control system. The LED will identify the option selection with either one or two fast flashes.
  4. Save & Exit: Press and hold the button until the LED flashes rapidly once, indicating the end of programming.

Available User Modes:

  • MODE 7:
    • OPTION 1 (Default): Vehicle with alarm.
    • OPTION 2: Vehicle without alarm.
  • MODE 8:
    • OPTION 1 (Default): No reset.
    • OPTION 2: Complete reset of option and module.

Maintenance Features

The manual does not explicitly detail maintenance features in the traditional sense (e.g., cleaning, part replacement schedules). However, it strongly emphasizes proper installation as a key aspect of preventing issues and ensuring longevity:

  • Thorough Reading: Users are instructed to read the installation guide thoroughly before beginning the installation process.
  • Testing Equipment: The use of a high-quality digital multi-meter is mandatory for testing. The explicit warning against using test lights or logic probes highlights the sensitivity of the vehicle's low voltage signal wires and the potential for damage from improper testing. This implies that correct electrical practices during installation are the primary "maintenance" for the device's proper functioning and the vehicle's integrity.
  • Reset Options: MODE 8, OPTION 2 provides a "Complete reset of option and module," which serves as a troubleshooting or re-configuration tool, effectively resetting the device to its default state if issues arise or if a fresh configuration is needed. This can be considered a maintenance-related feature for resolving software-related problems.

In summary, the Caravan/Pacifica Door Lock Alarm Interface is a robust integration module designed to enhance vehicle control and security through a data bus interface. Its functionality is comprehensive, covering various locking, alarm, and convenience features. Proper installation and adherence to testing guidelines are paramount for its reliable operation and the prevention of vehicle damage.
