Overview

The HMC-EF183 is a large-capacity Memory Card (128 MB) designed for use as external memory with CS/CJ-series PLCs and NSJ Controllers. It is RoHS compliant and offers a range of features for data storage, program management, and system backup.

Function Description:

The HMC-EF183 Memory Card serves as an external storage medium for various types of data essential to the operation of PLCs and controllers. It can store user programs, PLC Setup data, I/O Tables, and other operational data. This allows for flexible management and transfer of configurations and programs between devices or for backup purposes.

A key feature is its ability to facilitate ROM operation from the Memory Card at PLC startup. This means that the PLC can boot directly from the programs and settings stored on the card, providing a convenient way to deploy or restore system configurations.

The card supports the logging of specified ranges of I/O memory data in either CSV or TXT format. This logging can be initiated using instructions within the user program or through Smart FBs (function blocks). This capability is crucial for data acquisition, monitoring, and troubleshooting, allowing users to record operational parameters over time for analysis.

For enhanced data management, the HMC-EF183, when used with a Memory Card Adaptor (HMC-AP001), allows for editing of logged CSV/TXT data on a personal computer. The Memory Card Adaptor enables the Memory Card to be mounted in a PCMCIA slot of a personal computer, bridging the gap between the industrial control system and standard computing environments. This facilitates offline analysis, modification, and preparation of data before it is reloaded onto the PLC.

The card also supports file and directory management operations directly from the user program or Smart FBs. Users can rename, create, or delete directories and files on the Memory Card, providing programmatic control over the stored data.

A significant maintenance feature is the ability to back up all CPU Unit data, as well as data from mounted Special I/O Units and CPU Bus Units, onto the Memory Card without requiring a Programming Device. This simplifies system backup and restoration procedures, reducing downtime and ensuring data integrity.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Memory Capacity: 128 MB
  • Dimensions: 42.8 × 36.4 × 3.3 mm (W × H × T)
  • Weight: 15 g max.
  • Current Consumption: Approximately 30 mA (when used with PLC)
  • Application/Storage Environment: Same as general specifications of PLC
  • No. of Writes: 100,000 (guaranteed value)
  • No. of Files Writable to Root Directory: 511
  • File System: FAT16
  • Files that can be stored: Program files, Parameter files, Data files, Conversion table files, Comment files, Program index files, Unit/Board backup files.
  • International Standards: N, L, CE (for HMC-EF183); CE (for HMC-AP001). These standards are current as of February 2007 and include UL, CSA, cULus, NK, and Lloyd standards, and EC Directives.

Usage Features:

  • Pre-formatted: Memory Cards are pre-formatted when shipped, eliminating the need for initial formatting before use. If reformatting is required after extensive use, it must be done in the CPU Unit using the CX-Programmer or a Programming Console, not on a personal computer or SPU Unit, to ensure proper functionality.
  • Compatibility: The HMC-EF183 is designed for CS/CJ-series PLCs and NSJ Controllers. However, it is important to note that these Memory Cards cannot be used with CS1G-CPU (@@H), CS1H-CPU (@@H), CJ1G-CPU (@@H), or CJ1H-CPU (@@H) CPU Units manufactured before January 9, 2002 (lot number 020108 or earlier), or NS7-series PTs manufactured before May 8, 2002 (lot number 0852 or earlier). Additionally, the HMC-EF183 cannot be used with CS1G-CPU (@@(-V1)) or CS1H-CPU (@@(-V1)) CPU Units. Users should confirm applicability when ordering.
  • Memory Card Adaptor (HMC-AP001): This adaptor allows the HMC-EF183 Memory Card to be inserted into a PCMCIA slot of a personal computer, enabling convenient data editing and management on a standard computer.
  • Write Life: Flash memory has a limited number of write cycles. The HMC-EF183 has a guaranteed limit of 100,000 writes. Continuous writing every 10 minutes would allow for over two years of operation before exceeding this limit.
  • Minimum File Size Consideration: Due to the allocation unit size (e.g., 2,048 bytes), even very small files will occupy a minimum of 2,048 bytes of space on the Memory Card. Users should be aware that storing many small files can lead to the card becoming full sooner than expected.
  • Insertion Direction: The Memory Card must be inserted in the correct direction. For CS-series CPU Units, the label on the Memory Card must face to the right. Forcing the card into the slot in the wrong direction can damage the card and prevent it from operating properly.

Maintenance Features:

  • BUSY Indicator: The CPU Unit's BUSY indicator lights up when the Memory Card is being accessed. It is critical never to turn off the power to the PLC or remove the Memory Card while the BUSY indicator is lit. Doing so can render the Memory Card unusable. Before removing the card, users must press the button to stop power supply to the Memory Card and wait for the BUSY indicator to go out.
  • Detection Time: After insertion, it may take several seconds for the CPU Unit to detect the Memory Card. The detection time varies depending on factors such as the PLC's cycle time, the Memory Card's capacity, and the number of files stored on the card. When accessing the Memory Card, it is recommended to use the Memory Card Detected Flag (A34315) in a NO input condition for the instruction accessing the Memory Card.
  • System Backup: The ability to back up all CPU Unit data and data from mounted Special I/O Units and CPU Bus Units directly to the Memory Card without a Programming Device simplifies system recovery and maintenance, making it easier to restore configurations in case of system issues.
