Overview

The Opticron Explorer WA ED-R Monocular is a versatile optical instrument designed for a range of activities, from travel and sporting events to birdwatching and astronomy. It is available in three models: 8x32, 8x42, and 10x42, offering different magnifications and objective lens diameters to suit various viewing needs.

Function Description

The monocular's primary function is to provide magnified views of distant objects, offering a clear and sharp image through its optical system. It is designed for single-hand use, making it convenient for quick observations. The "WA" in its name likely stands for "Wide Angle," indicating a broad field of view, while "ED-R" suggests the use of Extra-low Dispersion glass with a specific coating for enhanced image quality, reducing chromatic aberration and improving color fidelity.

Important Technical Specifications

The specifications vary slightly across the three models:

  • Product Code:
    • 8x32: 30784
    • 8x42: 30785
    • 10x42: 30786
  • Field (ft/1000yd): This indicates the width of the view at 1000 yards.
    • 8x32: 408 ft
    • 8x42: 393 ft
    • 10x42: 339 ft
  • Close Focus (ft): The minimum distance at which the monocular can achieve focus.
    • 8x32: 6.6 ft
    • 8x42: 6.2 ft
    • 10x42: 6.2 ft
  • Eye Relief (mm): The distance from the eyepiece lens to the exit pupil, important for comfortable viewing, especially for eyeglass wearers.
    • 8x32: 18 mm
    • 8x42: 17 mm
    • 10x42: 15 mm
  • HxW (in): Height and width dimensions.
    • 8x32: 4.7x2 in
    • 8x42: 5.4x2.1 in
    • 10x42: 5.4x2.1 in
  • Weight (oz):
    • 8x32: 9.2 oz
    • 8x42: 11.6 oz
    • 10x42: 11.3 oz

These specifications highlight that the 8x32 model is the most compact and lightest, while the 8x42 and 10x42 models offer larger objective lenses, which generally translate to brighter images, especially in low-light conditions. The close focus distance is quite good across all models, allowing for observation of nearby subjects.

Usage Features

The Opticron Explorer WA ED-R Monocular incorporates several features designed for user convenience and optimal viewing experience:

  • 3-Stage Locking Rotating Retractable Eyecup Assembly (A): This feature allows users to adjust the eyecup position for comfortable viewing, whether they wear glasses or not. For eyeglass wearers, turning the eyecup clockwise into the 'down' position provides the full field of view. When not wearing glasses, the eyecup should be returned to the upright position. The locking mechanism ensures the eyecup stays in the desired position.
  • Wide Band Focusing (B): The central focusing band enables easy and precise adjustment of focus. Users simply rotate the band until a clear and sharp image is obtained at different distances.
  • Objective Lens (C): This is the front lens of the monocular, responsible for gathering light and forming the initial image. The diameter of this lens (32mm or 42mm, as indicated by the model numbers) affects the brightness and resolution of the image.
  • Lug for Connecting Monocular Strap (D): A dedicated lug is provided for attaching the included neoprene strap, allowing for secure and convenient carrying of the monocular.

Included Accessories:

  • Soft Case: For protecting the monocular during storage and transport.
  • Rubber Objective Lens Cover: Shields the objective lens from dust, dirt, and scratches.
  • Cleaning Cloth: A specialized cloth for safely cleaning the optical surfaces.
  • Neoprene Strap: For comfortable and secure carrying.

Optional Accessories:

  • 30443 Tripod Mount (for 42mm models only): This bespoke sleeve mount provides a secure connection to any photo/video panhead with a 1/4" thread. It attaches over the objective lens housing, allowing for stable, hands-free viewing, which is particularly useful for extended observations or digiscoping.
  • 40951 Universal Tele-Adapter (UTA 2x + connection ring): This adapter converts the monocular into a pocket telescope, effectively doubling its magnification.
    • 8x32 with 40942 -> 16x32
    • 8x42 with 40943 -> 16x42
    • 10x42 with 40943 -> 20x42 This accessory significantly extends the monocular's versatility, allowing for higher magnification when needed.

Maintenance Features

Proper care and cleaning are essential to maintain the performance and longevity of the monocular.

  • Care and Cleaning:
    • Dust Removal: Gently remove excess dirt and dust from the eyepieces and objective lenses using compressed air or a soft lens cleaning brush.
    • Lens Cleaning: For smudges or persistent dirt, breathe lightly on the exposed glass surface to create condensation, then wipe with an optical cleaning cloth in a circular motion until the surface is clean.
    • Caution: Avoid hard and persistent rubbing of dirty surfaces, as this can cause abrasive scratches on the glass, which may distort viewing.
  • No Disassembly: Users are explicitly warned not to attempt to dismantle the instrument, as this will invalidate the warranty.
  • Cold Weather Considerations: In cold weather, external lens surfaces may steam up when moving the instrument from a cooler outdoor environment to a warmer indoor one. If this occurs, the instrument should be left to stand for a few minutes until any condensation evaporates naturally.
  • Safety Warning: A critical safety warning is provided: "Never under any circumstances use this monocular to view the Sun. Doing so will cause serious damage to your eyes." This emphasizes the importance of protecting one's vision.
