Overview

The Optimum OP-ECOSAVE Economy 7 / Multi Tariff Timer is a heater controller designed for general purpose use, specifically for managing the use of cheap rate electricity to heat water during off-peak hours. It offers both timed operation and a boost function for on-demand heating.

Function Description:

The primary function of the OP-ECOSAVE timer is to control immersion heaters, leveraging Economy 7 or multi-tariff electricity rates. It allows users to set specific "TIMED ON" periods, typically during the night, to heat water when electricity is cheaper. Additionally, it features a "BOOST" function, enabling users to activate the heater for a short, adjustable period during peak times if extra hot water is needed. The device ensures that the heater is only active during the programmed "TIMED ON" periods or when the "BOOST" function is engaged, thereby optimizing energy consumption and cost.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model: OP-ECOSAVE
  • Type: Economy 7 / Multi Tariff Timer
  • Minimum Switching Time: 15 minutes
  • Voltage: 220-240V AC 50Hz
  • Temperature Rating: -10°C to 55°C
  • Max Current: 16A resistive / 2A inductive
  • Boost Duration: Adjustable between 15 and 120 minutes
  • Fitting: Surface mounting
  • Dimensions (mm): 86H x 155W x 55D
  • Protection Category: IP20
  • Compliance: Complies with European Norm EN 60730-1: 2011 (Automatic Electrical Controls for Household and similar use), and European Directives: LVD; EMC; RoHS.
  • Wiring: Suitable for fixed wiring only. Possible cable cross sections are 3 x 2.5 mm² (2X output) or 3 x 4mm² (2X output).

Usage Features:

The timer features a clear dial with tappets for setting the "TIMED ON" periods. Each tappet represents a 15-minute interval, allowing for precise scheduling.

  • Clock with Tappets: Used to set the "TIMED ON" period. Tappets moved to the outer position activate the heater during that time.
  • Timed On Indicator: A light that glows when the "TIMED ON" output is active, indicating that the heater is receiving power during the scheduled period.
  • On/Off Switch: This switch has two positions:
    • "OFF POSITION": The clock runs, but the heater is disconnected. Neither the "TIMED ON" nor the "BOOST" functions will activate the heater.
    • "ON POSITION": Both the "TIMED ON" and "BOOST" settings are activated, allowing the water to be heated during the programmed periods.
  • Boost Button: Activates the boost function.
  • Boost Indicator: A light that glows when the "BOOST SWITCH" is used, indicating that the boost function is active.
  • Boost Function: This feature allows for extra hot water during peak times. Users can select a boost duration between 15 and 120 minutes. Pressing the "BOOST BUTTON" once switches it ON. Pressing it again will interrupt the boost function before the selected time is completed.
  • Setting the Time of Day: The dial should be turned clockwise until the correct time of day aligns with the time set marker on the 24-hour clock face.
  • Applications: The timer can be used with various immersion heater configurations, including two separate immersion heaters, a single immersion heater, or dual immersion heaters, as illustrated in the wiring diagrams.

Maintenance Features:

  • Tamper-Proof Cover: The device includes a see-through cover designed to prevent unauthorized tampering with the settings. This cover can be removed using a screwdriver by applying it between the groove and the cover. To fit the cover, align the bar on its edge with the groove at the lower end of the dial in the housing.
  • Installation Guidelines:
    • The unit must be installed according to current IEE wiring regulations. If in doubt, a qualified electrician should be consulted.
    • The timer should not be mounted on a flammable surface or a conductive surface (e.g., metal).
    • It is crucial to ensure that the timer does not come into contact with combustible materials such as towels or bedding.
    • A minimum air space of 300 mm should be allowed around the timer for proper ventilation and safety.
    • Before installation, the mains supply must be disconnected.
    • When connecting to terminals with stranded flex, the supplied crimp ferrules MUST be used to ensure secure and safe connections.
    • The timer can be surface-mounted or fitted to a box, with wire entry possible from the rear or both sides.
    • Cable clamping is achieved using the attached cable clamp.
    • Terminals 1 to 5 are used for wiring connections, including mains supply, neutral, time on load, and boost load.
