Overview

The Orbit Heavy-Duty Traveling Sprinkler (Model 58322) is an automated irrigation device designed to water lawns and other areas by moving along a garden hose. This sprinkler offers a convenient and efficient way to cover large areas without manual repositioning.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Orbit Traveling Sprinkler is to provide automated, consistent watering across a designated area. It achieves this by "traveling" along a standard 5/8" garden hose, which also supplies the water. The sprinkler features adjustable spray arms that allow users to customize the watering diameter, and a speed control dial to regulate its movement and water application rate. An automatic shut-off ramp can be positioned along the hose to stop the sprinkler at a desired point, preventing overwatering or movement beyond the intended area.

Assembly and Setup:

  1. Sprinkler Assembly: Begin by inserting the black plastic T-connector into the top of the sprinkler. Then, twist the long silver spray arms into the T, tightening the black rings to secure them in place. Correct assembly ensures the sprinkler moves forward. Incorrect assembly (e.g., spray arms pointing backward or not moving) will result in improper operation.
  2. Positioning the Arms: The spray arms are individually adjustable to control the watering diameter, ranging from a minimum of 15 feet to a maximum of 55 feet.
    • For narrow spray coverage, point the arms slightly downward.
    • For wide spray coverage, point the arms upward approximately 30 degrees.
    • For windy conditions, position the arms horizontally.
    • Caution: Pointing the arms too far downward can cause them to become stuck and immobilize the sprinkler.
  3. Setting Up the Hose: Lay out up to 200 feet of 5/8" hose in the desired pattern on a fully grown lawn. The sprinkler may not work effectively on new or recently seeded lawns. It's crucial to create at least a three-foot loop with the end of the hose to prevent pinching when connecting to the sprinkler. Avoid creating sharp turns in the hose pattern.
  4. Positioning the Shut-Off Ramp: The automatic shut-off ramp can be placed at any point along the hose pattern to stop the sprinkler. Ensure there is a minimum of 5 feet of straight hose on either end of the ramp for proper contact.
  5. Hooking Up the Sprinkler: Place the sprinkler on the hose so that the front tire is directly on the hose, and the back wheels are on either side. Ensure the sprinkler is facing the desired direction of travel. Connect the water supply hose to the rear of the sprinkler.
  6. Setting the Sprinkler's Speed: Adjust the traveling speed by pulling up on and rotating the dial on the top of the sprinkler. The sprinkler can travel from 0 to 37 feet per hour.
    • High: Select for faster movement and light watering.
    • Low: Select for slower movement and heavier watering.
    • Neutral: Select for no movement; the sprinkler will remain stationary and water a designated area.
  7. Running the Sprinkler: Pull out the stopper located underneath the sprinkler, between the back wheels. Turn on the water supply. The sprinkler will then move along the hose track at the selected speed, stopping when its shut-off plunger contacts the ramp stop.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Hose Compatibility: Designed for 5/8" hose, up to 200 feet long.
  • Water Pressure: Chart calculations are based on an average water pressure of 40 psi.
  • Watering Diameter: Adjustable from 15 feet to 55 feet.
  • Travel Speed: Adjustable from 0 to 37 feet per hour.
  • Water Application Rate: Varies with speed and arm position (e.g., 1/4" to 1/2" for standard traveler).
  • Coverage Area: Up to 13,500 sq. ft. (Max. Width 55', Max. sq.ft. 13,500) for standard traveler at high gear max.
  • Effective Coverage: Up to 11,900 sq. ft. (Effective Width 54').
  • Travel Distance: Up to 200 feet.

Usage Features:

  • Automated Watering: Eliminates the need for manual repositioning, saving time and effort.
  • Adjustable Coverage: Spray arms allow for customization of watering diameter to suit different lawn sizes and shapes.
  • Speed Control: Users can select different travel speeds to control the water application rate (light vs. heavy watering).
  • Automatic Shut-Off: The shut-off ramp provides precise control over the stopping point, preventing overwatering.
  • Versatile Hose Patterns: Can follow various hose patterns, adapting to irregular lawn shapes.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: To maintain peak performance, ensure the filter washer at the hose coupling and the spray arms remain clean and unblocked.
  • Draining: After each use, drain the sprinkler by standing it on end for at least five minutes to eliminate all water from its interior. This helps prevent internal damage and extends the product's lifespan.

Safety and Damage Prevention:

  • Stopping the Sprinkler: When the sprinkler contacts the shut-off ramp, the incline pushes the stopper up, stopping the sprinkler.
  • Moving the Sprinkler: Before repositioning the hose or moving the sprinkler, always turn off the water supply first. Eliminate excess pressure from the hose and pull the sprinkler's stopper back out. Attempting to move the stopper with water pressure in the hose will be difficult.
  • Handling: Use caution when picking up and moving the sprinkler to avoid dropping it, which could cause damage to the device or its parts.
  • Operation: Do not force the sprinkler to move faster or slower while it is in operation.
  • Environment: Ensure the sprinkler does not become mired in thick grass or mud. Clear any objects blocking its path.
  • Surface Use: The sprinkler is designed exclusively for use on grass. Never attempt to use it on concrete driveways, sidewalks, or other hard surfaces, as this can severely damage the motor assembly.
