Binoculars
Congratulations on your purchase of a precision Orion UltraView
binocular. With proper care and use it will provide many years of
superb, enjoyable viewing. To get the most out of your binocular,
please read the following instructions.
Warning: Never look at the Sun with binoculars or any
other optical instrument. Severe and permanent eye dam-
age could result. On sunny days, children should use
binoculars only with adult supervision.
Adjusting for the Distance Between Your Eyes
The distance between the eyepiece lenses of the binocular should
be adjusted to match the distance between your eyes, called the
“interpupillary distance. To adjust the binocular, hold each barrel
firmly; move them together or apart while looking through the bin-
ocular with both eyes until you see a single, round field. Make this
adjustment before focusing.
Focusing
UltraView binoculars feature a convenient center focusing knob.
However, because your eyes may differ slightly in their focus, the
UltraView also includes a right eye diopter adjustment. Once the
right eyepiece has been adjusted, you can focus the binocular
entirely with the center focusing knob. Here’s what to do:
With both eyes open, rotate the right eyepiece to the full coun-
terclockwise position, then sight on a distant subject. Cover the
right objective (front) lens with your hand. Turn the center focusing
knob until the image in the left eyepiece is sharp. Now cover the
left objective lens and focus the right side by rotating the right
eyepiece (do not adjust the center focusing knob) until the image
is sharp. The binocular is now focused for your eyes. Make a note
of the diopter setting so you can return to it quickly in the future.
With the right eyepiece now set, focusing is achieved by rotating
the center knob.
Lens Caps
Your UltraView binocular is fitted with a plastic cap for each of the
objective (large) lenses and eyepieces. Keeping the lens caps on
the binocular when it is not in use will greatly reduce dust buildup
and prolong the life of the optics.
Twist-Lock Eyeguards
All UltraView binoculars feature convenient twist-lock eyeguards.
With less than a 1/4 turn they go from fully extended to fully
retracted, or vice versa. When using the binocular without eye-
glasses, we recommend leaving the eyeguards in the extended
(up) position. For viewing with eyeglasses on, retract each eye-
guard turning it counter-clockwise until fully retracted. With the
eyeguards retracted (down), your eyes can be positioned closer
to the eyepiece lenses for an improved field of view with your
glasses on.
Mounting Your Binoculars on a Tripod
For steadier or extended viewing, you can mount your UltraView
binocular on any standard camera tripod by means of an optional
“L”-bracket (available from Orion and most binocular dealers).
Unscrew the small cap bearing the white tripod symbol located
at the front of the center shaft, between the two binocular barrels.
Removing this cap reveals a 1/4"-20 threaded hole into which
the top end of the L-bracket is inserted. The bottom end of the
L-bracket is threaded onto the tripod itself.
Cleaning and Care
Although your UltraView binocular is rubber covered, it is not
waterproof! Avoid exposure to excessive moisture.
The lens surfaces of your binoculars are vacuum-covered with
antireflection coatings that can be damaged with careless han-
dling. Avoid touching lens surfaces with your fingers or any course
material. Clean the lenses about twice a year, and more frequent-
ly if they get dirty. The dust that builds up on them promotes mold
growth, which etches the glass and destroys the coatings. Always
use lens cleaning tissue and fluid designed specifically for multi-
coated lenses. Do not use tissue or fluids made for eyeglass or
household use.
WARNING Never look directly at the Sun through
your binoculars without professionally made
solar filters, even for an instant, or permanent eye
damage could result. Young children should use
these binoculars on sunny days only with adult
supervision.

Overview

The Orion UltraView Binoculars are precision optical instruments designed for enjoyable viewing, available in 8x42 and 10x50 configurations.

Function Description

These binoculars are designed to provide clear and magnified views of distant subjects. They feature a center focusing knob for general focus adjustment and a right eye diopter adjustment to compensate for differences in focus between the user's eyes. The twist-lock eyeguards allow for comfortable viewing with or without eyeglasses, extending for use without glasses and retracting for use with them. For extended or steadier viewing, the binoculars can be mounted on a standard camera tripod using an optional "L"-bracket, which attaches to a 1/4"-20 threaded hole located at the front of the center shaft between the barrels.

Usage Features

Adjusting for Interpupillary Distance: To achieve a single, round field of view, the distance between the binocular barrels (interpupillary distance) must be adjusted to match the user's eyes. This is done by holding each barrel firmly and moving them together or apart while looking through the binoculars with both eyes.

Focusing:

  1. Rotate the right eyepiece to its full counterclockwise position.
  2. Cover the right objective (front) lens with a hand.
  3. Look through the left eyepiece and turn the center focusing knob until the image is sharp.
  4. Cover the left objective lens.
  5. Focus the right side by rotating the right eyepiece (without adjusting the center focusing knob) until the image is sharp.
  6. Once set, the binocular is focused for the user's eyes, and subsequent focusing is achieved solely by rotating the center knob. Users are advised to note their diopter setting for quick future adjustments.

Eyeguards: The twist-lock eyeguards can be extended (up position) for viewing without eyeglasses or retracted (down position) by turning them counter-clockwise for viewing with eyeglasses. Retracting the eyeguards allows the eyes to be positioned closer to the eyepiece lenses, improving the field of view when wearing glasses.

Mounting on a Tripod: An optional "L"-bracket can be used to mount the binoculars on any standard camera tripod. To do this, unscrew the small cap bearing the white tripod symbol located at the front of the center shaft between the binocular barrels. This reveals a 1/4"-20 threaded hole where the top end of the L-bracket is inserted, and the bottom end of the L-bracket is threaded onto the tripod.

Safety Warning: It is crucial to never look directly at the Sun with these binoculars or any other optical instrument without professionally made solar filters. Doing so can cause severe and permanent eye damage. Children should always use binoculars under adult supervision on sunny days.

Maintenance Features

Lens Caps: The binoculars are fitted with plastic caps for both objective and eyepiece lenses. Keeping these caps on when the binoculars are not in use helps reduce dust buildup and prolong the life of the optics.

Cleaning and Care:

  • General Care: The UltraView binoculars are rubber-covered but are not waterproof; excessive moisture should be avoided.
  • Lens Cleaning: The lens surfaces have antireflection coatings that can be damaged by careless handling. Avoid touching lens surfaces with fingers or coarse materials. Lenses should be cleaned approximately twice a year, or more frequently if they become dirty, as dust buildup can promote mold growth, which etches the glass and destroys coatings.
  • Cleaning Procedure:
    1. Gently puff air onto the lens with a blower bulb or compressed air to remove larger particles.
    2. Use a soft lens brush to remove any remaining loose debris.
    3. Apply two drops of lens cleaning fluid (specifically designed for multi-coated lenses) onto a sheet of lens tissue (never directly onto the lens).
    4. Gently wipe the lens in a circular motion, avoiding undue pressure or rubbing.
    5. Quickly remove excess fluid with a clean, dry lens tissue. For larger lenses, clean only a small area at a time, using a fresh tissue for each area.
  • Important Note: Do not use tissue or fluids made for eyeglasses or household use. Do not attempt to disassemble the housing or clean interior lens surfaces yourself; this should be handled by a qualified optical repair technician.

Storage and Cold Weather:

  • Fogging Prevention: Optics can fog up when exposed to excessive temperature changes or high humidity.
  • Cold Weather Acclimation: In cold weather, allow the binoculars to adjust slowly to the outdoor temperature for a few hours before use. Store them in their case in a cool area like an unheated garage or car trunk.
  • Post-Use Storage: After use in cold weather, store the binoculars in a cool area for one to two hours before bringing them into a warm house. Then, open the case, remove the binoculars, take off the lens caps, and allow everything to dry out overnight.
  • Long-Term Storage: Store the instrument in a cool, dry place. Humid environments can lead to mold growth and ruined optics, which is not covered by the warranty.

Repair: If the UltraView binoculars require internal cleaning, optical alignment, or other repairs, they should be returned to Orion (if under warranty) or taken to a qualified optical repair shop. Users should never disassemble the binoculars themselves, as this can disturb precision optical alignment and void the warranty.

Warranty: Orion UltraView Binoculars come with a One-Year Limited Warranty against defects in materials or workmanship from the date of purchase. This warranty benefits the original retail purchaser only. During this period, Orion Telescopes & Binoculars will repair or replace any warranted instrument at their option, provided it is returned postage paid to Orion Warranty Repair, 89 Hangar Way, Watsonville, CA 95076. Proof of purchase (e.g., a copy of the original invoice) is required if the product is not registered. The warranty does not cover abuse, mishandling, modification, normal wear and tear, or if the instrument has been abused.
