Overview

The Orvis Clearwater Large Arbor reel is a lightweight fly fishing reel designed to balance properly with a variety of rods. It features a large arbor spool design and an inline disc drag system, developed over two years to offer performance comparable to high-performance machined reels.

Technical Specifications:

The reel is offered in two sizes:

  • II Reel: Weighs 5.4 oz. and has a diameter of 3½".
  • IV Reel: Weighs 6.1 oz. and has a diameter of 3¾".

Capacity in Yards (quoted using 20-lb. Dacron® backing):

  • II Reel:
    • WF4 line: 125 yards
    • WF5 line: 100 yards
    • WF6 line: 75 yards
  • IV Reel:
    • WF8 line: 225 yards
    • WF9 line: 200 yards
    • WF8 line: 175 yards

Usage Features:

  • Drag System: The reel incorporates a dependable center line drag system. The drag is adjusted using a positive click drag knob, ensuring consistent settings. Turning the knob clockwise increases resistance, while turning it counterclockwise decreases it. The drag adjustment is infinitely variable, allowing for wide-ranging and controllable settings. Users are advised that the minimum drag setting should always be sufficient to prevent over-running of the line during fast runs. Additional drag can be applied by palming the spool rim with fingers or palm.
  • Retrieve Conversion: The reel is easily convertible for either left- or right-hand retrieve. It comes factory-installed for left-hand wind. To convert to right-hand wind, the user needs to remove the spool, pull off the keyed bush and clicker plate assembly (Parts #19 & #20), flip the clutch bearing (Part #18), and then reassemble the components.
  • Spool Removal: The spool release is located in the middle of the reel spool. To remove the spool, the user must depress the spool release latch while simultaneously lifting the spool out of the reel body.

Maintenance Features:

  • Lubrication: The reel is properly lubricated prior to shipping. However, routine cleaning and lubrication are recommended at least twice per year, especially after extensive use or contact with dirt or sand. All moving components, including the handle, center spindle, and gear shaft, should be lightly lubricated with Penn reel lube, which is available in tackle shops.
  • Storage: It is important not to store the reel wet or in a wet reel case or tackle box. For extended storage, both the line and backing should be removed, and the drag should be loosened.
