INTRODUCTION
Updating a classic, the CFO tastefully blends modern perfor-
mance-enhancing design and technology under a traditional-looking
skin. Features include:
Two internal radial stainless steel reel bearings.
Line guard is machined into the reel cage.
Modified machined design is lighter.
Impregnated wood handle.
Brown/bronze anodized matte finish.
Disc drag.
DRAG OPERATION
Orvis CFO Disc Reels feature an adjustable
disc drag system. The pressure exerted on the disc
determines the drag pressure and may be adjusted
by turning the drag adjustment knob located on
the back of the reel frame.
To increase the drag, turn the drag adjustment
knob (figure 1) clockwise. To decrease it, turn the
knob counterclockwise. Sufficient drag pressure
must always be applied when fighting a fish to pre-
vent line overrun. Additional drag may be applied
by palming the spool rim with you fingertips or
palm.
SPOOL REMOVAL
The spool release latch is located in the middle
of the reel spool. To remove the spool, depress the
spool release latch (figure 2) while lifting the spool
out of the reel frame.
CONVERTING TO RIGHT-HAND
RETRIEVE
Your new CFO Reel has the drag pawl factory-
installed for left-hand wind.
To change your CFO Reel to right-hand wind,
depress the spool latch release and remove the
spool. On the backside of the spool, you will see a
spool gear that has three screws fastening it to the
spool.
1. Remove the three clutch screws then remove
the spool gear from the spool.
2. Find the clutch bearing. It will either be
inside the spool gear or still on the spool (fig-
ure 3).
If the bearing stays with the gear upon
removal, use a small screwdriver to push the
bearing out.
If the bearing was in the spool upon removal of the spool gear,
use a pair of pliers to remove it from the spool.
3. Remove the bearing, flip it over, and replace it in the the spool
gear.
4. Replace spool gear with the three clutch screws.
5. After you have reassembled the spool gear, remove the click
pawl, flip it over, and replace it on the reel frame to complete
the conversion.
ROUTINE MAINTENANCE
Your new Orvis CFO reel has been properly lubricated prior to ship-
ping. However, it should be cleaned and lubricated after extensive use
or after contact with dirt, sand, or saltwater. Your reel should receive rou-
tine cleaning and maintenance at least twice each year. Lightly lubricate
all moving components—handle, center spindle, and gear shaft with Penn
reel lube, available in tackle shops. After lubrication, check screws for
proper tightness. Do not put the reel away wet, or into a wet reel case or
tackle box.
Following use in saltwater, the reel should be rinsed in fresh water and
all parts, except drag surfaces, lightly oiled. The body and spool should be
wiped with a lightly oiled cloth.
For extended storage, remove both line and backing and loosen the
drag.

Overview

The Orvis CFO reel is a fly fishing reel designed to blend traditional aesthetics with modern performance and technology. It features a disc drag system, internal radial stainless steel reel bearings, and a machined line guard integrated into the reel cage. The reel has a lighter, modified machined design, an impregnated wood handle, and a brown/bronze anodized matte finish.

Function Description

The primary function of the Orvis CFO reel is to manage fly line during casting and retrieval, and to provide adjustable drag pressure when fighting fish. The disc drag system allows the user to control the drag pressure by turning an adjustment knob located on the back of the reel frame. Turning the knob clockwise increases drag, while turning it counterclockwise decreases it. Sufficient drag pressure is crucial to prevent line overrun, and additional drag can be applied by palming the spool rim.

The reel is designed for easy spool removal, facilitated by a spool release latch located in the middle of the spool. Depressing this latch while lifting the spool allows it to be removed from the reel frame.

The CFO reel is factory-installed for left-hand wind, but can be converted to right-hand wind. This conversion involves removing the spool, detaching the spool gear by unscrewing three clutch screws, removing and flipping the clutch bearing, reattaching the spool gear, and finally removing, flipping, and replacing the click pawl on the reel frame.

Important Technical Specifications

The Orvis CFO reel comes in three models: CFO I, CFO II, and CFO III, each with different weight and line capacity specifications.

  • CFO I: Weight: 3½ oz.
  • CFO II: Weight: 3⅜ oz.
  • CFO III: Weight: 3⅛ oz.

Line Capacity (based on Orvis 20-lb. Dacron® backing and a 90-ft weight forward floating fly line):

  • WF1: 100 yds (CFO I)
  • WF2: 75 yds (CFO I), 125 yds (CFO II)
  • WF3: 50 yds (CFO I), 100 yds (CFO II)
  • WF4: 75 yds (CFO II), 75 yds (CFO III)
  • WF5: 50 yds (CFO III)
  • WF6: 25 yds (CFO III)

If a double taper fly line is used, deduct 50 yards from the stated capacities.

  • Easy Spool Removal: The quick-release spool latch simplifies changing spools, allowing for rapid line changes or maintenance.
  • Convertible Retrieve: The reel can be easily converted from left-hand to right-hand retrieve, accommodating individual angler preferences.
  • Durable Construction: The use of internal radial stainless steel reel bearings, a machined line guard, and an anodized matte finish contributes to the reel's durability and longevity.
  • Ergonomic Design: The impregnated wood handle provides a comfortable grip, while the overall design aims for a balanced and user-friendly experience.

Maintenance Features

  • Routine Cleaning and Lubrication: The reel should be cleaned and lubricated at least twice a year, or after extensive use, especially after contact with dirt, sand, or saltwater. All moving components, including the handle, center spindle, and gear shaft, should be lightly lubricated with Penn reel lube.
  • Saltwater Care: After use in saltwater, the reel should be rinsed in fresh water, and all parts (except drag surfaces) should be lightly oiled. The body and spool should be wiped with a lightly oiled cloth.
  • Storage: For extended storage, both line and backing should be removed, and the drag should be loosened to prevent unnecessary tension on the drag system components. The reel should not be stored wet or in a wet reel case.
  • Screw Tightness Check: After lubrication, all screws should be checked for proper tightness.

Guarantee and Repair

The Orvis CFO reel is unconditionally guaranteed against defects in materials and workmanship. For warranty claims or repairs, the reel should be sent to Orvis Reel Service. A $10 check is required for service, which will be returned if the reel is found to be defective in material or workmanship. This fee covers complete servicing (cleaning, lubrication, and return shipping). Damaged reels requiring parts or extensive repair will be billed at an hourly shop rate plus parts, with a written estimate provided upon receipt of the reel.
