SERVICING
Do-it-yourself
There is same servicing work which you ean do
yourself, e. g. checking oil leveis, changing oils
etc. These adn those small repairs which every
driver encounters, for example changing a bulb,
a fuse, a uvheel åre subsequently described in
this manual.

BEAR IN MIND ....
- A 10. 000 km (6. 000 miles) service is needed in
arder to keep your car in good trim both from
a traf f ic and an operational point of vievu.
- A neglected 10. 000 km (6. 000 miles) service
ean result in your car emlttlng exhaust gases
harmful to the snvironment.
- Servicing is best done by §n OScar or a VOLVO workshop
since it has personnel familiar with the
products. VOLVO special tools and reliable
service literature.

SOME OF THE SERVICE WORK
Val ves
The valve clearance should be. checked atter every
10. 000 km (6. 000 miles).
The check should be carried out in a workshop.
Com ression test
To get same idea of the condition of the engine,
a compression test should be carried out after
every 10. 000 km (6. 000 miles). this test should
be canied out in a workshop.
Clean and ad'ust s ark lu s
Remove the spark plugs atter every 6. 000 miles
(10. 000 km) and ad just the electrode gap. The
gap should be 0. 028-0. 032" (0. 7-0. 8 mm).
Change sparks plugs
The spark plugs should be changed every 12. 000 mile!
(20. 000 km).
Tightening should preferably be done with a torque
wrench. When fitting new plugs, be sure to fit
the right type (see page
30.
I ni t ion s stem
The ignition contact breaker gap and the englne
ignition timing should be checked every 6. 000
miles (10. 000 km). All adjusting work should
be done by a workshop iwith the proper equip-
ment. The distributor is ane of the most sensi-
tive units in the engine and careless handling
ean lead to decreased engine output and high
fuel consumptlon or even serious damage to the
englne.
Checkin and ad'ustin idlin speed,
rå id idle and choke
These checks should be made every 12. 000 miles
(20. 000 km) by an authorized workshop.
Air cleaner
The air cleaner consists of a replaceable
paper insert, uuhich should be replaced every
30. 000 km. Uith continous driving in dusty
conditions, it may be necessary to change the
cleaner more often. No kind of cleaning what-
soever should be carrled out between the above
intervals.
Check headli ht all nment
The alignment of the headlights should be
checked in a workshop after every 10. 0DO km
(6. 000 miles).
Fuel filter
The fuel filter should be cleaned after every
6. 000 miles (10. 000). Loosen the screvu, re-
mave the cover and the filter and clean them.
Check that the gasket is not damaged and make
sure that it seals properly when the cover
with filter is refitted.
Check the state of ;char e of batter
The state of charge of the battery should be
checked after every 10. 000 km (6. 000 miles).
The check is made uulth the help of an hydro-
meter which shows the specific gravity af the
battery acid. See page
At the same time, check the lead terminals
and terminal studs to make sure tha they åre
tight, coated with grease and that the battery
is firmly fixed.
