Walking Scks Instrucons for Use - EN
Intended use and indicaon
Our walking scks are designed for people with light mobility impairment with impairment to movements, compromised balance with suciently intact walking ability and impaired coordinaon. They are used to maintain, promote and
stabilise walking or to parally relieve the strain on the lower limbs. The walking scks can be used both indoors and outdoors. It is imperave that the safety instrucons are also observed!
Contraindicaon
The use of walking scks is unsuitable if there is a loss of limb in both arms or joint contractures/joint damage in both arms.
General safety informaon
Do not hang any bags, pouches or other objects on the walking sck! The walking sck may under no circumstances be used for any other purpose than that for
which it is intended, e.g. for liing or moving objects or as a tool for switching light switches or pressing buons on lis! It is essenal that the ground has a good
grip to ensure a secure hold of the walking sck! Avoid wet oors or surfaces such as gravel, sand, foliage, ice or snow! Pay aenon to stumbling points such as
unevenness, holes in the oor, loose oor coverings or edges, because the walking sck can unexpectedly slip away or sink in! Extra cauon is recommended when
lighng condions are insucient, since irregularies in the ground can then only be seen with diculty! When adjusng the push-buon, it must protrude from
the hole as far as it will go (Fig. 2)! The holes for adjusng the walking sck undergo a certain amount of wear. It is important to ensure that they are not worn out,
as this would prevent the push buon from locking securely. When adjusng the clip, the plasc clip must have a posive t when inserted (Fig. 1)! Prior to each
use, make sure that all screw connecons are rmly ghtened!
Adjusng the walking sck
Warning! Please contact your specialist dealer to ensure proper funconal and ergonomic adjustment! Incorrectly adjusted walking scks may restrict the funconality of the walking sck or lead to overloading or incorrect
loading of the paent! The walking sck is handed over to you as a paent in a proper condion, whereby it is individually adjusted to your body by your specialist dealer or health care specialist. If you have any doubts as to
whether this is the case, please contact the responsible specialist personnel. The walking sck can only oer you the relief you desire if it is opmally adapted to your body size. Adjustment: If your walking sck is ed with a
union nut, this must be loosened by approx. half a turn anclockwise prior to adjustment (Fig. 1). Unlock the height adjustment by pressing in the push buon or pushing out the clip. Adjust the length of the walking sck to your body size
by pulling the support tubes out or pushing them together. Lock the height adjustment once again by aligning the tubes as such, that the two locking holes are on top of each other, whereby the push-buon engages again. In case of clip
adjustment, reinsert the clip. Following adjustment, the union nut must be ghtened again. Height-adjustable walking scks can be shortened by max. 10 cm in the lower part. Non-adjustable walking scks are shortened by individually
adjusng the support tube to your size using a metal saw or a tube cuer. Cauon: Risk of falling due to walking scks buckling when the height adjustment is not locked correctly! Check the correct locking aer each adjustment by
aempng to twist or move the walking sck!
Use
There are many dierent ways to use the walking scks and it all depends on the individual restricons of the walking ability.
Seek instrucon in the use of the walking sck from your specialist dealer or health care specialist! Walking scks must not be
used in water. Any penetrang water can lead to corrosion forming and consequently to an increased risk of breakage. Avoid
prolonged contact of the walking sck with moisture. The walking sck must be dried appropriately when it comes into contact
with water. The correct handling of the walking sck takes some pracce. We therefore recommend geng addional support
from an assistant at the beginning. Always use the walking sck on the side opposite the injured leg or the leg that needs to be
protected! Guide the walking sck close to the body, not at an angle facing outwards (Fig. 3)! You might fall otherwise! During
use, grasp the handle of the walking sck completely and rmly with your hand! Always place the walking sck as straight
as possible on the ground so that you do not slip away! Find chairs with armrests to sit on. You will then be able to support
yourself on the armrests when standing up! Wear shoes that are as comfortable as possible with at soles so that your leg can
beer withstand addional strain! If you do fall: If possible, let the walking sck fall to the side so that you do not fall onto
it! Have someone accompany and support you if possible, so that they can catch you if you fall! Try and arrange for qualied
personnel to instruct you in climbing stairs with a walking sck! When climbing stairs with a walking sck, it is important to hold
on to the railing using your free hand (Fig. 4)! When climbing stairs with two walking scks, hold both walking scks together
in one hand and make sure to hold on to the railing rmly using your free hand (Fig. 5)!
Precauonary measure
Using a walking sck places an unusual amount of strain on individual parts of the body! This may result in the following undesirable side eects: The hands may encounter pressure or chang! Keep in mind that this can lead to pain and
overexeron at the beginning or during prolonged exeron! It is important to take sucient breaks!
Storage and care
Never store the walking scks in the vicinity of heat sources such as furnaces, heaters or in places suscepble to heat in a car! Do not expose walking scks to sunlight for prolonged periods of me! Strong sun or heat damages the plasc!
Protect your walking scks from toppling over and from damage to the paintwork (e.g. by using straps or holders). The rubber buer is a wearing part and must be replaced at regular intervals. Walking scks must only be used again aer
an extended period of non-use following prior inspecon by qualied personnel!
Warning! Never clean the handle and rubber cap using oily substances! There is a risk of slipping! In the event of contaminaon, clean the walking sck using a mild cleaning agent and a so cloth where necessary. Never use cleaners
containing solvents, since these will damage the plasc! Note: Should disinfecon be required, then a suitable disinfectant agent should be used. Please follow the manufacturer’s instrucons for use.
Limitaon of use
The walking sck must only be subjected to loads in accordance with the manufacturer’s instrucons. Observe the maximum permissible body weight that is specied on the product! Please contact your specialist dealer in the case of
greater loads or in case of any doubts. A bent or damaged walking sck must not be used under any circumstances, since it can no longer oer the necessary stability! A bent walking sck must also not be straightened because of the risk
of breakage! Note: All serious incidents that occur in connecon with the product must be reported to the manufacturer and the competent authority of the Member State in which the user and/or the paent is located.
Re-use (rental) / duraon of use
We shall only accept liability pursuant to the Product Liability Act for the inial placing of our products on the market. We only consent to reuse if we have rst inspected the product. The service life of the walking sck is limited to 2 years.
The user shall be responsible for the connued use of the walking sck aer this me.

Overview

This document describes the Ossenberg walking stick, a medical device designed to aid individuals with light mobility impairment. It serves to maintain, promote, and stabilize walking, or to partially relieve strain on the lower limbs. These walking sticks are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, provided all safety instructions are strictly followed.

Function Description:

The Ossenberg walking stick is intended for individuals experiencing light mobility impairment, compromised balance, or movement limitations, but who still possess sufficiently intact walking ability and coordination. It provides support and stability, helping users to maintain their independence and mobility. The adjustable models allow for customization to the user's body size, ensuring optimal ergonomic fit and effectiveness. The walking stick is not suitable for individuals with a complete loss of limb function in both arms or severe joint contractures/damage in both arms.

Important Technical Specifications:

The walking sticks are available in various models, each with specific technical characteristics.

  • Adjustable Models (A1/A2): These models typically offer a height adjustment range from 75 cm to 95 cm, with a tube diameter of 16 mm. Maximum permissible body weights for these models vary, including 100 kg, 120 kg, 130 kg, and 150 kg. Specific models like 3321/3322 offer a range of 85 cm to 108 cm with a 19 mm tube diameter and a 180 kg weight capacity. Kiddy models (691 - KIDDY) are adjustable from 54 cm to 74 cm with a 16 mm tube diameter and a 120 kg capacity. XL models (693XL/695XL) adjust from 86 cm to 106 cm with a 19 mm tube diameter and a 160 kg capacity.
  • Unadjustable Models (A3): These models have fixed lengths, typically around 102 cm, 103 cm, 104 cm, or 105 cm, with a tube diameter of 19 mm. Maximum permissible body weights for these models also vary, including 100 kg, 120 kg, 130 kg, and 150 kg.
  • Replacement Parts: Key replacement parts include Art. 13120 (for 16 mm tube diameter), Art. 13123 (for 19 mm tube diameter), Art. 715 (rubber buffer for 16 mm tube diameter), Art. 719 (rubber buffer for 19 mm tube diameter), Art. 716 (rubber buffer for Kiddy models), and Art. 970 (rubber buffer for unadjustable models).
  • Service Life: The service life of the walking stick is limited to 2 years.

Usage Features:

  • Adjustment: For adjustable models, the union nut (if present) must be loosened by approximately half a turn anticlockwise. Height adjustment is achieved by pressing the push button or pushing out the clip, then pulling or pushing the support tubes to the desired length. Ensure the push button protrudes fully from the hole or the clip is positively fitted. After adjustment, the union nut must be tightened. Non-adjustable walking sticks can be shortened using a metal saw or tube cutter. Always verify correct locking by attempting to twist or move the walking stick after adjustment to prevent buckling and falls.
  • Proper Use: Users should seek instruction from a specialist dealer or healthcare professional. The walking stick should always be used on the side opposite the injured or weaker leg. It should be guided close to the body, not at an outward angle, and the handle should be grasped completely and firmly. The walking stick should be placed as straight as possible on the ground to prevent slipping. When sitting or standing, use chairs with armrests for support. Wear comfortable, flat-soled shoes.
  • Safety Precautions: Avoid hanging bags or other objects on the walking stick. Never use it for purposes other than its intended function (e.g., lifting objects, operating switches). Ensure the ground provides a secure grip, avoiding wet floors, gravel, sand, foliage, ice, or snow. Exercise caution on uneven surfaces, holes, loose floor coverings, or edges, as the stick may slip or sink. Be extra careful in insufficient lighting. Regularly check that all screw connections are firmly tightened. The rubber buffer is a wearing part and must be replaced at regular intervals.
  • Falling: If a fall occurs, try to let the walking stick fall to the side to avoid falling onto it. If possible, have an assistant present to catch you.
  • Stairs: When climbing stairs with one walking stick, hold onto the railing with your free hand. With two walking sticks, hold both together in one hand and use the other hand to firmly grip the railing.
  • Body Strain: Using a walking stick can cause unusual strain on the hands, potentially leading to pressure or chafing, pain, or overexertion, especially at the beginning or during prolonged use. Take sufficient breaks.

Maintenance Features:

  • Storage: Never store walking sticks near heat sources (furnaces, heaters, in hot cars) or in direct sunlight for prolonged periods, as strong sun or heat can damage plastic components. Protect the walking stick from toppling over and from damage to the paintwork (e.g., by using straps or holders).
  • Cleaning: In case of contamination, clean the walking stick with a mild cleaning agent and a soft cloth. Never use oily substances on the handle or rubber cap, as this poses a slipping hazard. Avoid cleaners containing solvents, as they can damage the plastic.
  • Disinfection: If disinfection is required, use a suitable disinfectant agent and follow the manufacturer's instructions for use.
  • Inspection: After an extended period of non-use, the walking stick must be inspected by qualified personnel before being used again.
  • Damage: A bent or damaged walking stick must never be used, as it compromises stability and increases the risk of breakage. Do not attempt to straighten a bent walking stick.
  • Replacement Parts: Only original replacement parts and accessories should be used. Contact your specialist dealer for replacement parts, accessories, and repairs.
  • Disposal: Consult your specialist dealer for regional disposal regulations.

Warranty and Liability:

Ossenberg provides a 12-month warranty for justified material defects. The company reserves the right to repair or replace defective items at its discretion. The warranty does not cover defects due to wear and tear, improper handling, or modifications to the product. Ossenberg is certified according to DIN EN ISO 13485 and complies with the requirements of Regulation (EU) 2017/745 (MDR). All serious incidents related to the product must be reported to the manufacturer and the competent authority of the Member State where the user/patient is located.
