Overview

The Oster Rice Cooker is a household appliance designed for cooking rice and steaming various foods. It features a compact design with a heating base, a removable inner pot, and a glass lid.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Oster Rice Cooker is to cook rice efficiently and keep it warm after cooking. It also includes a steaming basket (on select models) that allows users to steam vegetables or other foods simultaneously with rice, or independently. The appliance operates by heating water in the inner pot, which then cooks the rice or steams the food. Once the water has evaporated, the cooker automatically switches to a "KEEP WARM" mode.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power: Operates on a 120-volt AC electrical outlet.
  • Capacity: Capable of cooking up to 3 full "rice cooker" Oster® measuring cups of uncooked rice, or 6 (5.33oz) Oster® cups of cooked rice.
  • Measuring Cup: Includes a specific "rice cooker" measuring cup (5.33 oz.) that is not a standard U.S. measuring cup.
  • Lid: Features a tempered glass lid (on models with glass lids) for visibility during cooking.
  • Inner Pot: Removable inner pot with a non-stick coating.
  • Controls: Equipped with a "COOK" switch and indicator lights for "COOK" and "KEEP WARM" modes.

Usage Features:

  • Ease of Use: Simple operation with a single "COOK" switch that automatically transitions to "KEEP WARM" mode.
  • Rice Cooking:
    • Measure rice using the provided Oster® measuring cup.
    • Wash rice thoroughly in a separate bowl until water is clear.
    • Place rice in the inner pot and add the corresponding amount of water (e.g., for 3 Oster® cups of uncooked rice, add water to the "3" mark on the inner bowl).
    • Ensure the inner pot is dry on the outside and properly seated in the heating base.
    • Cover with the lid.
    • Plug in and push the "COOK" button down. The "COOK" indicator light will illuminate.
    • The cooker automatically switches to "KEEP WARM" when water evaporates.
    • Allow rice to stand for 10-15 minutes in "KEEP WARM" mode without removing the lid for optimal results.
    • Mix rice with the provided rice ladle or a long-handled utensil to release steam.
    • Note: Brown rice typically requires longer cooking times than white rice.
  • Steaming (with Steaming Basket - select models):
    • Clean and prepare food or vegetables.
    • Place the inner pot in the base and add the appropriate amount of water.
    • Place the steaming basket on the rim of the inner pot.
    • Add vegetables or food to the steaming basket and cover with the lid.
    • Plug in and push the "COOK" button down.
    • Steaming times vary based on food type and desired consistency (e.g., asparagus 8-10 min, broccoli 11-13 min, carrots 8-10 min).
    • Steaming can be done simultaneously with rice; most vegetables can be added about 10 minutes before rice finishes cooking.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Do not touch hot surfaces or escaping steam. Use handles/knobs and oven mitts.
    • Never immerse the cord, plug, or heating unit in water or other liquids.
    • Always unplug when not in use, before cleaning, and allow to cool.
    • Do not operate with a damaged cord or plug.
    • Use on a dry, stable, level surface.
    • Do not obstruct the steam release vent.
    • Cook only in the removable pot provided, not directly in the heating base.
    • Ensure adequate ventilation during use.
    • Do not use the removable cooking pot on a gas or electric cooktop or open flame.
    • Do not leave the rice ladle or measuring cup in the inner pot while the unit is on.
    • Handle glass lids with care as they can shatter if damaged.
    • Do not operate models with locking lids unless the cover is locked.
    • Avoid using metal utensils in the non-stick inner pot.
    • Do not let the inner pot boil dry.
  • Extension Cord Use: An extension cord may be used if its electrical rating is at least as great as the rice cooker's rating, and the cord is arranged to prevent tripping or pulling by children.
  • Polarized Plug: The appliance has a polarized plug (one blade wider than the other) for safety. Do not attempt to defeat this feature.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning After Each Use:
    • Unplug the rice cooker and allow it to cool completely before cleaning.
    • Heating Unit: Wipe the exterior lightly with a damp cloth or sponge and dry thoroughly. Never immerse the heating unit in water.
    • Inner Pot: Remove from the cooker, fill with hot water, let it sit, then wash with hot soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry. The inner pot is dishwasher safe (top rack only).
    • Lid, Rice Ladle, Measuring Cup: Wash with hot soapy water, rinse, and dry thoroughly. These are not dishwasher safe.
    • Heating Plate: Ensure no rice grains stick to the heating plate in the bottom of the heating base. If they do, remove immediately using a non-abrasive pad. Polish the area for good contact.
    • Cleaning Agents: Do not use abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, steel wool, bleach, vinegar, or other harsh chemicals.
  • Storage: Store the appliance in a cool, dry place.
