Overview

The Oz Charge OC1206U / OC1212U is a 100% automatic smart battery charger, maintainer, and rejuvenator designed for 12V conventional lead-acid batteries, including VRLA, AGM, Calcium, Gel, and WET types. It is engineered to be user-friendly, requiring no technical expertise for operation, and is controlled by a microprocessor with safety timers at every stage of the charging process.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Oz Charge device is to charge, maintain, and recondition lead-acid batteries. It employs a multi-stage charging process to ensure optimal battery health and longevity. This process includes:

  1. Qualification (Battery Condition Check): Upon power-up, the charger assesses the battery's internal impedance and initial voltage to determine its condition and whether reconditioning or a standard charge cycle is needed. It also determines the appropriate charge current the battery can accept.

  2. Enhanced Battery Rejuvenation (Recondition Mode): If the initial qualification detects a poor battery condition, the patented rejuvenation process automatically initiates. This stage uses a high-voltage equalizing and peak pulse reconditioning charge to repair sulfated batteries. This unique feature breaks down and dissolves lead-sulfate crystal buildup on battery plates, extending battery life and balancing high acid concentrations. The equalization voltage can reach a maximum of 16V. If the battery voltage does not reach 9V within 24 hours, the rejuvenation process times out.

  3. Soft Start Charging: This stage gently charges the battery with a reduced output until the battery voltage reaches 11V. If the battery voltage does not reach 11V within 6 hours, a safety timer protection stops charging, and a fault LED flashes.

  4. Bulk Charging: The charger uses the maximum selected charge output until the battery voltage reaches a specific level (14.1V for Gel, 14.4V for AGM&WET, 14.7V for Calcium). If this voltage is not reached within 24 hours, safety timer protection activates, stopping the unit, and a fault LED flashes.

  5. Absorption Charging: This stage applies a constant voltage while gradually reducing the charging current. This ensures the battery receives a full charge without the risk of overcharging.

  6. Equalization Charging: A proven process that carefully overcharges the battery to restore its full capacity. This stage is automatic for Calcium battery types. For AGM&WET and Gel battery types, equalization only occurs if the initial start voltage was below 11 Volts.

  7. Battery Analysis: After the charge cycle is complete, the charger performs a battery analysis to check its condition. If the battery voltage drops too quickly during this mode, it indicates a potentially faulty battery, and a fault LED flashes.

  8. Float Mode: This stage allows the charger to remain connected 24/7, maintaining the battery at a constant 13.6V to ensure it stays 100% fully charged and well-maintained.

  9. Long Term Maintenance (Pulse Charge): During float mode, the unit applies a special pulse charge to keep the battery in optimal condition over extended periods.

Usage Features:

The Oz Charge device offers several features designed for ease of use and flexibility:

  • 100% Automatic Operation: The charger automatically diagnoses battery condition and determines the necessary charge or rejuvenation cycle, eliminating the need for manual intervention.
  • Selectable Battery Type: Users can select the appropriate battery type (AGM, WET, Gel, Calcium) to ensure optimal charging parameters for their specific battery. This is crucial for preventing damage and maximizing battery life.
  • Selectable Charge Rate/Mode: The charger provides three charge rate options:
    • Rapid Charge Mode (6A/12A): Utilizes maximum charging current for the fastest possible charge time. The cooling fan may operate in this mode.
    • Silent Charge Mode (4A/8A): Charges at a slightly reduced rate, eliminating the need for the cooling fan, ideal for quiet environments.
    • Maintenance Mode (1A): Recommended for long-term maintenance charging or for charging smaller batteries.
  • Battery Condition Analysis: The device performs an analysis to assess the battery's health, providing insight into its state after charging.
  • 24/7 Connectivity: The charger can be left permanently connected to the battery year-round, ensuring continuous maintenance and full charge without supervision.
  • Short Circuit and Reverse Polarity Protection: Built-in safety features prevent damage to the charger and battery in case of incorrect connections or short circuits. If reverse polarity is detected, a fault LED illuminates, and the charger disables output.
  • Heavy-Duty and Corrosion-Resistant Output Connectors: The charger comes with a quick-connect fly lead and heavy-duty, fully insulated crocodile clip harness, ensuring durable and reliable connections.
  • ECO Mode: This ultra-low power consumption circuit activates when the AC power is connected but the battery is disconnected, drawing less than 0.36W. During long-term maintenance with the battery connected, power consumption is around 0.03kWh per day. Green LEDs flash to indicate ECO mode.
  • Safety Timers: Each charging stage is protected by safety timers. If a stage times out (e.g., battery voltage doesn't reach a certain level within a set time), the charger stops charging to protect the battery, indicated by a slowly flashing fault LED.
  • Internal Overheat Protection: An integrated electronic circuit protects the charger from damage due to overheating or overloading by automatically decreasing the charging current. Charging resumes once the internal temperature returns to a safe level.
  • Reverse Polarity Protection: If the output leads are connected incorrectly, the fault LED will illuminate, and the charger will be disabled. Users simply unplug from AC power and reconnect correctly.
  • Short Circuit Protection: The charger automatically turns off if the output leads are short-circuited, with the fault LED illuminating, preventing damage.

Maintenance Features:

While the device itself is designed for low maintenance, its features contribute to the maintenance of the battery it charges:

  • Battery Rejuvenation Technology: The patented rejuvenation feature actively repairs sulfated batteries, a common cause of battery degradation, thereby extending the battery's lifespan.
  • Pulse Charge for Long Term Maintenance: The specialized pulse charge in float mode ensures that batteries left connected for extended periods are kept in optimal condition, preventing self-discharge and maintaining full charge.
  • Battery Voltage Retention Analysis: This feature helps monitor the battery's ability to hold a charge, providing an indication of its overall health and capacity retention.
  • Automatic Diagnosis and Charge: The charger's ability to automatically diagnose battery condition and apply the appropriate charge cycle helps prevent overcharging or undercharging, both of which can harm battery health.
  • Designed for Indoor Use: The charger is intended for indoor use only, protecting it from environmental elements like water, rain, snow, and other liquids, which helps preserve its internal components and functionality.
  • Warning Indicators: The LED status indicator table provides clear visual cues for various charging stages and fault conditions (e.g., fault, full, absorption, bulk, over-temperature, short circuit, reverse polarity), enabling users to quickly identify and address any issues.

The Oz Charge OC1206U / OC1212U is a comprehensive and intelligent solution for maintaining the health and extending the life of 12V lead-acid batteries, offering advanced charging, reconditioning, and safety features in an easy-to-use package.
