General Overview
Install It Right with L.O.C. PRO
Don’t cheat yourself out of all the performance your new radio or amplier can deliver. Proper audio line level
matching is critical when replacing your vehicle’s factory (OEM) radio or amplier. It can be the difference
between a great sounding system that you enjoy every day and a buggy, noisy mess that drives you crazy.
PAC L.O.C.PRO™ interfaces have been professionally designed for those who want the very best.
The L.O.C.PRO™ LP5-2 can be used in either replacing an OEM radio and retaining the factory amplied
system or adding ampliers to a system that does not have RCA outputs. Level matching is achieved using
precision stereo gain dials and will enable proper adjustment of audio output of the radio for optimum system
performance. Differential inputs also allow for use in OEM BOSE and other premium system scenarios. Included
Speaker Level Input to RCA Level Output
Speaker level input to RCA level output is the most commonly used conguration for the LP5-2.
Use this when you need to create RCA level outputs from a source that only has speaker level outputs.
The RCA input connectors on the main harness will not be utilized for this type of installation, we suggest
cutting them off the harness 3 inches from the RCA end so they can be saved and used for a future installation.
After all the connections are made on the remaining wires, skip to the level adjustment section of this manual.

Overview

The PAC L.O.C.PRO™ LP5-2 is a Line Output Converter designed to professionally integrate new amplifiers or radios into a vehicle's audio system. Its primary function is to convert speaker-level audio signals to RCA-level outputs, allowing for proper level matching between different audio components. This is crucial for achieving optimal sound quality and preventing issues like noise or distortion.

Function Description:

The LP5-2 serves two main purposes:

  1. Replacing an OEM radio and retaining the factory amplified system: In this scenario, the LP5-2 takes the speaker-level outputs from the new radio and converts them into RCA-level inputs for the factory amplifier, ensuring compatibility and proper signal levels.
  2. Adding amplifiers to a system that does not have RCA outputs: When a source unit (like a factory radio) only provides speaker-level outputs, the LP5-2 creates the necessary RCA-level outputs for aftermarket amplifiers, enabling their integration into the system.

The device achieves level matching through precision stereo gain dials, which allow for accurate adjustment of the audio output for optimum system performance. It also features differential inputs, making it suitable for use in vehicles with OEM BOSE and other premium audio systems, which often utilize differential signaling.

Important Technical Specifications:

While specific voltage ranges for input and output are not explicitly detailed as numerical specifications, the manual emphasizes the LP5-2's ability to handle various amplifier input ratings (e.g., 2vrms, 4vrms, 8vrms max line-level input). The level adjustment process involves setting the LP5-2's output voltage to match the target maximum input voltage of the amplifier, which could be, for example, 4 volts for mid/high frequencies or 2 volts for sub frequencies. This indicates a flexible output range to accommodate different amplifier requirements.

Usage Features:

  • Speaker Level Input to RCA Level Output: This is the most common configuration. The LP5-2 takes speaker-level inputs and provides RCA-level outputs. For this setup, the RCA input connectors on the main harness are typically cut off (approximately 3 inches from the RCA end) to facilitate wired speaker-level inputs.
  • Speaker Level Input to Speaker Level Output (for OEM amplifier retention): In this configuration, the LP5-2 converts speaker-level inputs to speaker-level outputs, useful when replacing an OEM radio and retaining the factory amplifier. The RCA input connectors are cut and used for wired speaker-level output.
  • Precision Stereo Gain Dials: These dials are central to the LP5-2's functionality, allowing users to fine-tune the audio output levels for optimal system performance.
  • Differential Inputs: This feature enhances compatibility with premium OEM audio systems, which often employ differential signaling for noise reduction.
  • Installation Flexibility: The manual suggests cutting off unused RCA ends to simplify wiring for specific installations, indicating adaptability to various setup requirements.
  • Compact Design: The note about unsnapping the L.O.C.PRO™ cover and removing the end panel insert for large RCA connectors suggests a design that aims for a compact footprint while still accommodating different connector sizes.

Level Adjustment (Calibration) Features:

The LP5-2 offers two methods for level adjustment:

  1. New School (Recommended for Pinpoint Accuracy):

    • Required Items: Digital Multi-Meter, Test track media (1kHz and 100Hz), and knowledge of the amplifier's max line-level input voltage specification.
    • Process:
      • Start with LP5-2 and amplifier gains at minimum.
      • Set the source unit to ¾ maximum volume and play a test track (1kHz for mid/high/full range, 100Hz for sub).
      • Use a multi-meter to test the LP5-2's output (negative on RCA shield, positive in center of RCA output).
      • Slowly adjust the LP5-2's level until the multi-meter reads the target voltage (matching the amplifier's max input).
      • Turn volume down, system off, connect RCAs, set amplifier gains to minimum, then fine-tune amplifier gains if needed.
    • Benefit: Provides pinpoint accuracy and minimizes the chance of noise, leading to the best possible sound quality.
  2. Old School (By Ear):

    • Process:
      • Start with LP5-2 and amplifier gains at minimum.
      • Set the source unit to ¾ maximum volume and play a familiar song with dynamic attributes (e.g., if max volume is 40, set to 30).
      • Slowly adjust the front channel gain of the LP5-2 until a "hint of distortion is audible," then back down just below that threshold until the distortion disappears.
    • Benefit: A simpler method that doesn't require specialized tools, relying on the user's auditory perception.

Maintenance Features:

The manual does not explicitly detail maintenance features in terms of cleaning or routine checks. However, the design consideration mentioned for accommodating large RCA connectors ("If using large RCA connectors that are difficult to insert into housing, unsnap the L.O.C.PRO™ cover and remove end panel insert around RCA outputs") suggests a degree of modularity or accessibility for installation adjustments, which could indirectly aid in troubleshooting or re-configuration if needed. The emphasis on proper level adjustment as a "critical" step for preventing a "buggy, noisy mess" implies that correct initial setup is the primary "maintenance" for optimal long-term performance.
