Overview

The provided document is an installation manual for the PAW unvented hot water cylinders, specifically models PAW-TD20C1E5-UK, PAW-TD30C1E5-UK, and PAW-TD30C1E5HI-UK.

Function Description

The PAW unvented hot water cylinder is designed to store and provide hot water for domestic use. It operates as an unvented system, meaning it is directly connected to the mains water supply and maintains mains pressure at the hot water outlets. The cylinder's energy efficiency, characterized by low standing heat losses, aims to reduce energy costs over its lifetime. It is compatible with thermostatically controlled heat pumps and boilers, utilizing a primary heat source to heat the stored water. An immersion heater is included as an auxiliary or emergency backup heating element. The system incorporates various safety features, including pressure reducing valves, expansion relief valves, and temperature and pressure relief valves, to ensure safe operation. It is not suitable for gravity-fed primary systems or non-thermostatically controlled heat sources like solid fuel boilers or wood-burning stoves.

  • IP Classification: IP21.
  • Standby Heat Losses: 1.03 kWh/24h (43 Watts) for 200L model, 1.18 kWh/24h (49 Watts) for 300L models.
  • ErP Class: A for all models.
  • Mains Water Supply: Recommended 22mm copper tube, minimum 15mm if sufficient flow rate (20 litres/minute) and standing pressure (2.5 bar) are available. Designed for supply pressure up to 10 bar; an additional pressure reducing valve is required for pressures over 10 bar.
  • Design Pressure (cylinder/heating coil): 1/10 MPa/Bar.
  • Operating Pressure (cylinder): 0.3/3 MPa/Bar.
  • Operating Pressure (heating coil): 0.25/2.5 MPa/Bar.
  • Max. Operating Temperature (cylinder): 70°C.
  • Max. Operating Temperature (heating coil): 99°C.
  • Electrical Resistance Power: 1.5 kW @ 230V.
  • Electrical Installation: Conforms to IEE regulations, requiring a suitable fuse and double pole isolating switch.
  • Thermostat Type: Probe/Probe.
  • Immersion Thermostat Temperature Range: 8-70°C, factory set to 60°C.

  • Hydraulic Connections: All primary and secondary connections are 3/4" BSP female, immersion heater is 5/4" Inch, T&P valve is 1/2" Inch, and temperature sensor sleeve diameter is 8 mm.

Usage Features

  • Adjustable Feet: Three built-in adjustable feet allow for fine adjustment and levelling of the water heater on a stable, flat surface.
  • Immersion Heater: A 1.5 kW immersion heater acts as an auxiliary or emergency backup, with an adjustable thermostat (18-70°C) and a safety cut-out (87°C).
  • Digital Dual Cylinder Thermostat: Provides accurate temperature control with an LCD display showing current and user-defined water temperatures. It includes a pre-set safety cut-out at 80°C and a concealed manual reset.
  • Legionella Override/Boost: A user-defined setting allows for a weekly automatic one-hour boost to above 60°C to kill legionella bacteria. The duration of this override can be adjusted from 1 to 7 days or completely disabled.
  • Holiday Mode: A feature to completely switch off water heating and weekly boost during extended periods of vacancy, accessible via a button under the display.
  • Balanced Cold Water Supply (Optional): Allows for a balanced mains pressure cold water supply to showers or bidets, preventing pressure fluctuations when other hot water taps are used. A blanking cap is supplied if not required.
  • Secondary Return (Optional): Connection point available for a secondary return pipe, if desired.
  • Multibloc Valve: Supplied as an accessory, it integrates a pressure reducing valve, line strainer, balanced cold water take-off, check valve, and expansion valve for simplified installation and operation.
  • Motorised Valve: Required for indirect unvented cylinders to comply with regulations, acting as a positive energy cut-out and controlling domestic stored water temperature via the cylinder thermostat.

Maintenance Features

  • Annual Servicing: The cylinder requires annual servicing by a competent person to validate the guarantee. A log book is provided for recording service details.
  • Draining: The unit can be drained by switching off electrical power, isolating the heat pump/boiler, turning off the cold water supply, opening a hot water tap, and opening the drain cock at the base of the cylinder. The temperature and pressure relief valve can also be opened to speed up the process.
  • System Flushing: The line strainer typically prevents foreign materials, but if flushing is required, at least 50 litres of water should be run from the cylinder at the highest possible flow rate.
  • Safety Cut-out Reset: If the safety cut-out operates, the electrical supply must be isolated, the thermostat setting reduced, and the reset button pressed after checking the cause.
  • Expansion Relief Valve Maintenance: Manually opening the valve to discharge water to the tundish ensures it is working correctly.
  • Pressure Reducing Valve Maintenance: Involves isolating the cold water supply, opening a ground floor cold tap, unscrewing the cartridge, cleaning the filter mesh, and reassembling.
  • Expansion Relief Cartridge Maintenance: Involves isolating the cold supply, opening a ground floor cold tap, unscrewing the blue headwork, cleaning the valve seat face, and refitting.
  • Temperature and Pressure Relief Valve Maintenance: Manually opening the valve to discharge water to the tundish ensures proper function.
  • Internal Inspection: The immersion heater can be removed to allow visual inspection access to the cylinder's interior.
  • Expansion Vessel Check: While not requiring annual maintenance, if intermittent or slow discharge from the tundish occurs when water is heated, the precharge pressure of the expansion vessel must be checked and restored to its original value by a competent person. The vessel must be completely empty of water before checking precharge pressure.
