Overview

The PARD TA LRF is a thermal handheld device equipped with a laser rangefinder, designed for the New Zealand market. This additional manual provides important information regarding its operation, maintenance, and warranty.

Function Description

The PARD TA LRF is primarily a thermal imaging device that allows users to observe heat signatures, making it suitable for various applications where visibility is limited. A key feature of this device is its integrated Laser Rangefinder (LRF), which enables precise distance measurements to targets. The LRF function is designed to work effectively across different conditions, though its performance can be influenced by factors such as target reflectivity, angle to the lens, target size, sunlight, and atmospheric conditions. The device is rated to measure distances up to 1000m on highly reflective targets.

Usage Features

  • Battery and Power: The PARD TA LRF utilizes 18650 FLAT TOP batteries (3.7v). It is crucial to always remove the battery for charging and to use a quality charging device and batteries. The manual explicitly warns against removing the battery while the unit is switched on, even in sleep mode, as this can lead to startup failures or abnormal function. Users should ensure the LED is NOT on before removing the battery. For storage, it is recommended to remove the battery when the device is not in use. The device should NOT be powered from an external USB battery source.

  • Laser Rangefinder (LRF) Operation: When the LRF is active, users may hear a "dit dit" noise. This is a normal characteristic of the LRF unit due to the device's lightweight and compact design, which prioritizes portability over extensive shielding. This noise is generally not audible from the eyepiece and does not travel far, minimizing disturbance. The LRF laser is fixed and cannot be physically moved. The aiming box, visible through the thermal scope, is calibrated to match the actual laser impact at approximately 300m. Due to the laser's offset from the main thermal scope lens, slight variations may occur.

  • LRF Aiming Box Calibration: Users can adjust the LRF aiming box themselves. To do this, another device capable of seeing the laser (such as a PARD 008, DS35, 007, or a True Night Vision device) is required. The calibration process involves:

    1. Turning on the LRF.
    2. Opening the Main Menu.
    3. LONG pressing the "+" Button.
    4. Observing X and Y coordinates.
    5. Using the "+" and "-" buttons with "OK" to navigate between X and Y, making slow adjustments with single presses.
    6. Once satisfied with the alignment, SHORT pressing the MENU button to save the changes. The goal is to ensure the aiming box in the thermal scope aligns with the laser itself as seen through the night vision device.
  • General Usage Precautions: The manual emphasizes several critical precautions:

    • Never point the device at strong sources of light, such as the sun, welding arcs, or lasers, as this can cause damage and void the warranty.
    • The manual applies specifically to LRF models within the TA Series.
    • Users are encouraged to visit pard.co.nz for a series of setup videos, which demonstrate real-world results achieved with the PARD in New Zealand.

Maintenance Features

  • Software and Firmware: In cases of startup failure or abnormal function due to battery removal while the unit is on, users may need to reinstall the software to correct the issue. The manual also notes that some variations in device behavior may exist due to variations in firmware.

  • Support: For any questions or issues with the device, users are directed to contact support via the pard.co.nz website. After-hours support is available via text or email for simple fixes.

  • Warranty: The device comes with a three-year warranty in New Zealand, covering defects in materials and workmanship from the date of purchase. This warranty applies only to the original purchaser.

  • Self-Repair and Damage: Users are explicitly warned not to attempt to disassemble the device themselves. Any issues should be reported to the support team. The warranty does not cover damage caused by misuse, accidental damage, use in abnormal working conditions, failure to follow instructions, or damage caused by batteries. This highlights the importance of adhering to the operational and battery handling guidelines provided in the manual to maintain warranty coverage.
