Overview

This document outlines the operational and maintenance guidelines for the PAX PINPAD, including models SP20, SP30, S200, and S300. The PINPAD serves as a crucial interface for secure password entry during transactions, connecting to a Point of Sale (POS) system or Electronic Cash Register (ECR) via a communication line. Its primary function is to facilitate the secure input of sensitive information, ensuring the integrity of payment processes.

Function Description:

The PAX PINPAD is designed to securely capture customer input, specifically passwords, during various transaction types. It supports multiple card reading technologies to accommodate a wide range of payment methods, enhancing its versatility in retail and service environments. The device acts as a secure conduit between the customer and the payment processing system, isolating sensitive data entry from the main POS terminal to minimize security risks. Its robust design and operational protocols are geared towards maintaining the confidentiality and integrity of transaction data.

Usage Features:

The PINPAD offers several key usage features to ensure ease of operation and broad compatibility with different card types:

  • Magnetic Stripe Card Reading: The device supports the reading of magnetic stripe cards. Users are instructed to insert the card with the magnetic stripe facing the device's interior and swipe it through the reader slot at a steady speed. The PINPAD is designed to support bi-directional swiping, which adds convenience and reduces the chances of misreads. This feature is essential for processing older card types that rely solely on magnetic stripe technology.

  • IC Card Reading: For cards equipped with an integrated circuit (IC) chip, the PINPAD provides a dedicated IC card slot. To use this feature, the customer must insert the IC card chip-side upward into the slot and push it all the way to the bottom. This method ensures proper contact with the chip reader, enabling secure EMV (Europay, MasterCard, and Visa) transactions, which offer enhanced security features compared to magnetic stripe transactions.

  • Contactless Card Reading (Optional): The PINPAD may also include an optional contactless card reading capability. If available, customers can simply tap their contactless card or device into the sensing area located above the LCD screen. This feature supports NFC (Near Field Communication) payments, allowing for quick and convenient transactions without physical contact, which is increasingly popular for its speed and hygiene benefits.

  • SAM Card Installation: The PINPAD incorporates slots for SAM (Secure Access Module) cards, which are critical for cryptographic operations and secure communication. To install a SAM card, the user must first remove the SAM card cover, typically located at the bottom of the terminal. Once the cover is off, the SAM card can be inserted into its corresponding slot. SAM cards play a vital role in securing transactions by storing cryptographic keys and executing secure algorithms.

Maintenance Features:

Proper installation and ongoing maintenance are crucial for the longevity and secure operation of the PAX PINPAD. The manual provides several tips to ensure optimal performance and security:

  • Environmental Protection: Users are advised to avoid placing the terminal in environments exposed to direct sunlight, high temperatures, moisture, or excessive dust. These conditions can adversely affect the device's internal components, leading to malfunction or reduced lifespan. Maintaining a stable and clean environment is key to preserving the PINPAD's operational integrity.

  • Professional Repair Only: The manual strictly prohibits non-professionals from attempting to repair the terminal. This is a critical security and safety measure. Unauthorized repairs can void warranties, damage sensitive internal components, and potentially compromise the device's security features, making it vulnerable to tampering or data breaches. Any issues requiring repair should be handled by certified technicians.

  • Pre-Insertion Inspection: Before inserting any card, users are instructed to visually inspect the internal and surrounding areas of the IC card slot. This proactive measure is designed to detect any suspicious objects or tampering attempts, such as "skimming" devices that might be covertly installed to capture card data. If any suspicious objects are found, it is imperative to report them immediately to the relevant administrator to prevent potential fraud.

Password Entry Security Tips:

Given the sensitive nature of password entry, the manual provides comprehensive recommendations to enhance security and protect customer privacy:

  • Peep Shields: It is highly recommended to set up peep shields around the PINPAD. These physical barriers, often integrated into the cashier desk structures, prevent unauthorized individuals from visually observing the password being entered by the customer.

  • Strategic Placement: The POS terminal should be placed at an appropriate angle that makes it difficult for others to peer over and view the password. For instance, installing the POS above a movable bracket can help in adjusting its position to maximize privacy. This ergonomic and strategic placement is a simple yet effective way to deter visual theft of PINs.

  • Avoid Video Surveillance: During password entry, customers should be advised to avoid areas that are under video surveillance. While surveillance is generally for security, it can inadvertently capture sensitive PIN entries if not properly managed or if cameras are positioned inappropriately.

  • Customer Reminders: Merchants are encouraged to display text instructions that remind customers to shelter the PINPAD with their body or palm while entering their password. This simple act of physical concealment significantly reduces the risk of shoulder surfing.

  • Merchant Discretion: Merchants are also given the flexibility to choose other effective ways to protect customer input passwords, adapting to their specific store layouts and operational procedures. This acknowledges that a one-size-fits-all approach may not always be feasible and encourages proactive security measures tailored to the environment.

The PAX PINPAD is designed as a secure, user-friendly, and versatile device for handling payment transactions. By adhering to the outlined instructions for usage, installation, and maintenance, and by implementing the recommended security practices for password entry, businesses can ensure reliable operation and robust protection of sensitive customer data. The emphasis on professional repair and pre-insertion checks underscores the commitment to maintaining the device's integrity and preventing fraud.
