Overview

This document is an owner's manual for a PECO Lawn Vacuum, specifically designed for use with Kubota ZD18 and ZD21 units. The manual, part number Q0251 and revised on 9/9/03, provides comprehensive information on the assembly, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the lawn vacuum.

The PECO Lawn Vacuum is an attachment engineered to collect grass clippings, leaves, and other debris from lawns, enhancing the efficiency and cleanliness of lawn care. It works by creating a powerful suction that draws material from the mower deck through a boot and hose system into a collection box. The core of the system is a blower assembly, powered by a 6HP Kohler engine, which generates the vacuum force and propels the collected material into the container. The design integrates with the Kubota ZD18 and ZD21 mowers, ensuring a seamless and effective debris collection process.

Usage Features:

The manual emphasizes safety and proper operation to ensure effective and safe use of the lawn vacuum. Key usage features and recommendations include:

  • Pre-Operation Checks: Before each use, users are advised to check the engine oil and all hose connections to ensure the system is in proper working order.
  • Engine and Ground Speed: For optimal performance, the manual recommends running the vacuum engine at full throttle and adjusting ground speed to prevent clogging and ensure complete pickup of leaves and grass.
  • Slope Operation: When operating on slopes, it is crucial to mow up and down the face of the slope, never across. The container should be kept only half full when negotiating slopes, and mowing on slopes should begin with an empty container. Excessively steep slopes should be avoided.
  • Debris Inspection: Users should inspect their lawn and remove any foreign objects before mowing to prevent damage to the mower or the vacuum attachment. Deliberately running the mower over foreign objects is strictly prohibited.
  • Container Emptying: The blower tone will change when the container is full, signaling the need for emptying. The container is emptied by releasing a dump handle on the left side, pushing back on the container to release debris, and then pulling the box forward to close the rear door properly.
  • Hose Clamps: All hose clamps must be tightened before each use to maintain suction and prevent leaks.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Read the owner's manual thoroughly and familiarize yourself with the attachment's proper use.
    • Do not allow children or untrained adults to operate the vehicle or attachment.
    • Be watchful of children and pets while operating.
    • Maintain focus on the tractor while operating; avoid distractions.
    • Never operate the tractor or mower when not in the driver's seat.
    • Always stop the vacuum engine when emptying the container.
    • Stop both tractor and vac engines and remove the spark plug wire before removing or replacing hoses, boots, blower cones, or performing any maintenance.
    • Wear ear protection if the noise level is offensive.
    • Ensure the discharge guard and either the deflector assembly or the vacuum collector adapter are securely fastened.
    • Do not work around the mower deck boot or blower area until mower blades and the blower fan have completely stopped rotating.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and optimal performance of the PECO Lawn Vacuum. The manual outlines a schedule and procedures for necessary care:

  • Scheduled Care:
    • Before Each Use: Check engine oil and all hose connections.
    • After Each Use: Clean the collector box, hoses, and engine of all grass and dirt.
    • Every 10 Hours: Check to ensure all screws, nuts, bolts, pins, etc., are present and secure.
  • Storage:
    • Never store the lawn vacuum with a full or partially filled container, as decaying grass and leaves can pose a fire hazard.
    • Avoid leaving the vacuum exposed to the elements. While metal parts are painted for protection, the engine and other unprotected components can deteriorate if exposed to rain or snow.
  • Impeller Blade Replacement:
    • Removal: Remove hex bolts from the hub, then screw them into threaded holes to push the old blade off. If the impeller is stuck, gently tap the base between each vein with a hammer.
    • Replacement: Place the tapered bushing into the hub, align non-threaded holes, and secure with 1/4" x 1" hex bolts, torquing to 15 ft. lbs.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual includes a troubleshooting guide to help users diagnose and resolve common issues such as incomplete pickup, plugged hoses, excessive blower vibration, and failure to fill the box. Solutions range from adjusting engine speed and ground speed to cleaning components and contacting a dealer for more complex issues.
  • Service Information: Owners are encouraged to record their Service Center's name and phone number. The Service Center can provide replacement parts, accessories, and perform necessary repairs. If the Service Center cannot assist, users are directed to contact PECO directly with specific information about their tractor and vacuum unit.

The PECO Lawn Vacuum is designed for dependability and ease of operation, provided users adhere to the safety guidelines and maintenance schedules outlined in this comprehensive manual.
